I myself am an Autodesk 3ds max and maya user, I also use many other programs as well, but I FIND max and maya to be the most used and efficient programs for doing my 3d projects. @thedeepest33 Both softwares are used so much in the entertainment industries that I would recommend being comfortable in both. It makes you more marketable. These days a lot of companies make the choice of which one to use largely based on access to talent in their area. Many companies have even started to let the artist use whichever they prefer and have tooled their pipeline to allow that.

@thedeepest33 The problem is that processor speed is currently maxed and the best way is to distrubute it to more cores. Graphic cards works fine now but they will hit the same problem soon.
@nersh72 Call of dutys models and animations were made in Maya. Riot Games also animate theyre models in Maya (not sure about modeling and other stuff).
@ConstantMotionFilm yeah but once you outside collage or uni after using it for education you get hit with high prices and subscription fees that makes it pretty tricky to maintain having one when your not part of education or work.
@thedeepest33 yes, CG softwares are just tools where you can use your exprience, to be a good 3D animator, you need to know animation from basics (2D), but there is always exceptions. Its all about work you put in. Good luck ;)
Actually, texturing and sculpting is mostly done in zbrush/photoshop by- from half decent designers to aaa studios. Its one sector where autodesk falls short
@bezoro2008 I don't know about maya, but 3ds max can model, uvw, animate and partially texture. In conjunction with cryengine 3 sdk free, you've got a powerful package that just needs photoshop to finish it off
@musicjesus95 Because for the Trailers the renders are usually created using a psychotic computer or even a render farm to handle everything. Where as when playing the game everything has to be rendered right then and there so you can play. Most people will never have a GPU at there home capable of making renders like they do for the trailers and movie quality renders all together. In order to render a game on your PC assets in the released game (textures and 3D models) are tuned down. Get It?

Thats ok, everyone has their preferances. I like Autodesk because its pretty simple and easy to use for me since I'm a beginner but because of that same reason I would not be willing to pull out a full $5,000 for a program I'm not trained to use. Blender since it's free really helps out with that but I haven't been able to do much cus it's hard for me to figure out. I've been soaking up tutorial vids but I keep forgetting all those hotkeys
Everything made in 3ds max design will load into 3ds max and vice versa. They are the same engine and use the same file format. An exception is the lighting analysis tools in 3ds max design which are not in 3ds max.
Is there some main difference between 3Ds Max and Maya or is it just a matter of design? I know that maya is used more in the game industry but why? And since i don't own both i can't compare, please can someone give me a good answer?

You don't, you have the program to make 3d graphics. Coding is a whole different story, game design too, and sound design is something you've got to do for a video game too.
I got a questen. Why is there always so much nicer details, texture etc. In a Trailer for the game? Then you come to the game and think what happen? I know that the ps3 and xbox 360 can't handle high graphics but computers can but still.. i hope you understand what im talking about. Thank you for your time

Most high end games use Modo for character modelling, and minor touche up in 3ds max.
If you want to model charcters and make game assets use modo
