- Paleo Profile is back! Today we look a super-weird Triassic long necked reptile, Tanystropheus! We will examine what this animal used it’s long neck for, what it ate, and where and how it lived.

I really want to see a speculative paleo profile on humans, something that shows how future inhabitants of earth would theorize how humans lived based on our fossils, what mistakes would they make as they slowly got closer over time to discovering what we were really like? what would they imagine we looked like?
Yes........................................ Just picture a universe where humans went extinct and aliens came down to earth and looked at our fossils, it would be funny to see how much they would get wrong, it could also be a metaphor about how much we actually know about dinosuarus.

I think they'd probably imagine us as a prey species due to our lack of large claws, teeth and just organic weaponry in general (this is assuming, of course that they have only seen our fossils and have none of our tools, technology or buildings which would be ancient at this time), they'd probably imagine that we had nostril slits too, would they ever figure out that we have ears? I doubt it
EDIT: damn I just remembered that only predators have forward facing eyes, hmm I wonder how they would imagine we hunted without the knowledge that we build tools and weapons, I wonder if they'd eventually figure it out themselves without first seeing our tools and weapons?

Charlie Theanteater I doubt aliens would be able to reconstruct human fossils into anything that made any logical sense to us, all their knowledge of how animals look would be based on animals from their planet which I think would look like nothing we had ever seen, if they did try to reconstruct anything from our fossils they'd probably fail to understand how any would fit together and then assume that they were missing several thousand essential parts (I imagined a paleo profile on humans to be done by a future species that originated on earth and had evolved billions of years after some mass extinction event so they would still look like something that could evolve on earth just something we haven't seen before, juts like dinosaurs, assuming they look anything like we imagine them to, they look like a creature that would exist on earth because they did but they just don't look like anything we have living on earth today with a few minor exceptions)
Yeah I think it would be more likely that an other animal would evolve to be smart like we are after we die out than aliens coming to earth and randomly deciding to live here. But imagine traveling to the future with a time machine and having a chat with a two legged dog or something xD, that would be so cool

They don't seem to want to put actual fishing in the game, so I suppose this would be a good compromise.
Edit: they ARE gonna add functionality to fish meat for piscivores so maybe the Tanny could yield a higher amount of prime fish meat, perfect for getting a good Ptera or Spino tame.

The illustration at 7:55 is absolutely genius. This prehistoric animal could hover over the surface, leaving no ripples or disturbances on the water, and strike its prey from there.

Although Tanystropheus's incarnation in the game is fairly accurate (even mentioning how much drag its neck would have been underwater), the level of scientific accuracy is somewhat limited by the DS's technical capabilities.

The video game Fossil Fighters Champions also featured Tanystropheus, it was the first time I'd ever seen the creature. It was Water type and they definitely drew attention to its weirdest feature by giving it attack animations that had it swinging its long neck. I actually liked using Tanystropheus since other than starting the fight asleep it was fairly strong and fun to watch.

It's amazing that a heart could circulate through such a neck to the head.
That is actually one of the many side note theory's to their extinction that before the asteroid their hearts were giving out due to generations of it being stressed like that.
No idea of all implications but meh.
+Eric Hyland Well the Astroid and the Triassic Period were millions of years apart, so even if it did live through all that it wouldn't look the same.
+Eric Hyland Well not really because for a creature like that to be sustained it would need some way to outsmart gravity and get blood circulating to the head. It would probably have a big heart and could beet faster. Giraffes have long necks and they can get blood to the head so I don't see why this guy can't, now I'm just curious how.
+kieran cow-face I think it's ok for its size. On the other hand, recent study shows that large sauropods' neck cervical ribs can act like check valves to regulate blood pressure, so they are just fine with one heart.

Current studies are kinda inconclusive if I'm not wrong, it's kinda just a... well, it wouldn't work very well as an aquatic creature, but it wouldn't work very well as a non aquatic feature, and it's always found right near water but not actually in water so... ?

1. can you do a paleo profile on Thylacosmilus or Thylacoleo, it would very interesting to do a prehistoric marsupial
2. You may not know this but there was a mobile game called Dino Dominion wher you are transported to an island full of dinsaurs and you can catch them, get DNA samples of them, and train them to fight, basically a dino version of pokemon, anyways, this game had Tanystropheus as a SS rare character in the marine reptile category, but sadly last year the game was discotinued

I always imagined Tanystropheus as a fisher lizard. It's ridiculously long neck allowed it to lean over the water watching fish swim under and then snapping them up as they swam by.
I love the color scheme Mark Witton gave it. A grayish body that blends in with the coastal rocks and a light color on the neck and head, making it hard to tell apart from the sky if seen from below. It would be pretty much invisible for its prey.
I know you probably get this one a lot, but dilophosaurus paleontology profile. Brush if you don't know there is actually way more behind dilophosaurus than a simple medium sized predator with fancy headgear. WAY more.

I don't have much to add, but just think it's really cool how totally different animals evolve to fit the same ecological niches. From Tany to storks, Gallimimus to gazelles. Evolution is so fascinating.
Speaking of Chased by Sea Monsters, the idea of Tany being capable of caudal autotomy, that is, being able to break off its tail when attacked by a predator, like some modern lizards, was actually a legit theory, proposed by a real paleontologist! That idea was actually proposed by German paleontologist Rupert Wild, who was heavily involved in research on Tanystropheus during the 20th century. Notably, he thought that Tanystropheus was closely related to lizards, with it being part of the lepidosauromorphs. But several subsequent studies placed it and other “protosaurs” as archosauromorphs not long after Wild’s initial 1973 classification. In a 1975 paper, Wild cited one specimen from Ticino as allegedly sporting an autotomized tail, with the break-off point being at the 14th caudal vertebra, with textures on the vertebrae supposedly supporting that. However, subsequent studies have all dismissed Wild’s interpretation.

What is a dinosaurus?
Just read an article that came out today (06AUG2020) about this animal and remembered this video. Apparently they did CT scans of the skulls and that the skulls suggest they were exclusively aquatic and probably only went on land to lay eggs. They also confirmed that smaller specimens are actually a separate species and not juveniles, which was suspected before but didn't have definitive proof. Anyone know more about this? This video states pretty strongly that there's no way that was the case. The linked paper didn't seem to definitively state that they were entirely aquatic but did seem to suggest it, I'm no expert on this though. Have things really changed that much in the last four years or was that article wild speculation/misinterpretation of the paper?

We have strong evidence that Tanystropheus was semi-aquatic and most likely hunted in the water. We can't be sure about reproduction though as we haven't found eggs or embryos like we have for other fossil marine reptiles (ichthyosaurs and sauropterygians). But it's limb morphology indicates that it would have been capable of terrestrial locomotion (certainly it would've found it easier than a sea turtle or a seal), so coming onto land to lay eggs is a pretty reasonable assumption.
The Tanystropheus is my favorite Triassic creature!
I find it fascinating that reptiles have repeatedly evolved long necks. When you look at not only Tany, but also plesiosaurs, pterosaurs, sauropods, and theropods (birds), the long neck morphology appears again and again.

I've always loved Tanystropheus as one of the most amazing and fascinating creatures and this Paleo Profile was very fun to watch and get to learn about this animal a bit more. I've always been optimistic about Tanies habitat and environment and how it behaved with its long neck and this gave some good insight into that. Thanks Trey and have a Merry Christmas!

Tany is much smaller than I thought they were. Only around the size of a modern day reptile? Wow, that is so much smaller. I always thought Tany was around the size of sauropods. You learn something new everyday.

Actually, if memory serves, Tanystropheus did make an appearance in the documentary 'Sea Rex', where it was depicted as sitting on coastal rocks and dipping its head and neck into the water to catch fish.
Found a pose able toy of Tany from 1999 with crocodile legs in my storage.
Typing the name printed on its belly brought me back here!
Tany was also featured two or three times in Jurassic Park Toylines, in Jurassic Park: Chaos Effect, it actually had been combined with a snake, too.
