In this video I show how to make cheap, simple, flexible roads for tabletop gaming out of rubber floor mat and caulking.

This is the mat I use. Don’t get caught up on finding the exact same one. Any thin rubber floor mat should work.

Any suggestions for Australia?
Go to an Australian big box building store and look for something similar.
Great stuff! Would a 2mm-thick mat work just as well, or do you think it would lose too much weight?
I got torn up yoga mat, think that would work aswell? 🙂
Do you think you could make the same thing on thick garbage bags?
Imma be real. I have been modelling for over 30 years, so I don't get a lot of new info, or techniques from youtubers, even BMC. I watch the vids for inspiration or just entertainment value. But this series has been VERY inspiring. The floor mat roads are a gawdamn holy grail for me. I can't wait to make some. I even thought, I bet I could do rivers too.
So good work, man, you're even teaching us old dogs new tricks.
I feel like Jeremy’s construction background gives him a way of looking at things differently that a lot of people in the community haven’t been exposed to. Being in the construction industry makes you have to learn to adapt and think outside of the box on a regular basis. It also expose’s you to working with a lot of different materials and techniques.
I’ve been around and in the construction industry my entire life and in every capacity from diy to handyman to being licensed in multiple trades and even state codes official. I can’t stress how much this has benefited me after discovering TTRPGs and terrain building. It’s also probably the reason that BMC is my favorite channel for fresh ideas, I connect because of our shared backgrounds.
@@caseymiller3540 people need to spend more time just walking through stores like Home Depot looking at and touching stuff.
The home depot fondler
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial - One thing I like to do is buy 1 foot by 1 foot sheets of 1 inch tiles. They are literally ready to go and don't cost too much. They are, however, a little weighty. But you don't need many of them.
These make cool bases, too, for bigger creatures.
@@iknowmorethanuthink and don't forget ceiling tiles for pre-textured ground and hills...
Little tip for my fellow crafters out there: if you can't find exactly the same stuff used in the video, that's okay! Try some things and make it up as you go! It might not yield exactly the same result but all that matters is that you get a result you are happy with. I've found that half the fun in this hobby is trying weird stuff and finding out if it works or not. Have fun with it!
Very good advice 👍
And there in lies the essence of this hobby. There is something rewarding about DIY hobby challenges using the various items lying around the house. Just remember to ventilate your room if using things that are somewhat on the funky end of smelly!😢
People tend to really fixate on finding the exact same product which is both pointless and an unnecessary road block.
Correct. You may still want to know what the material is to help you figure out what is equivalent or similar in what is available to you, but the exact same thing is rarely required.
@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial That's because most of the people just want the end product of the crafting, they are not sharing your joy of crafting itself, experimentation, failing and all. Not everyone has the time and skill to indulge in the hobby of crafting, but are perfectly happy to "follow the recipe to get the cake they want". ;)
The kind of silicone used here (the stuff that smells like vinegar) is called “Acetoxy cure silicone”. Useful thing to know if you don’t have access to the same brands. Great video
good info!
Just rewatched this and caught the "Is this a waterfall?" excited moment at the end.
I want you to know that your videos have sparked a desire for building in me that I haven't felt in years. Watching my players get so excited by a new set piece I made watching your videos is amazing. Keep up the great work!
RIDICULOUS! You are absolutely SLAMMING it out of the park with these latest videos, my man. Loved the road one, but this river one is amazeballs. I totally got to try and make some of these myself. They totally have an "old school" look to them, like those early days Warhammer rivers on cardboard, lol. And I know that I can get the DIY ingredients locally! :D
ok.. now do LAVA.. please please do lava!
LOVE this video series
and as a total NOOB, so happy to see you are back to “basic” “more simple” projects :)
I am loving this series of crafts! Back to making affordable map items that have not sacrificed any quality! Right on 🤘🏽
I wish I could send you pictures of my dice tower and my walls. Because of your direction, I am the best crafter I know. Thank you for being such a pro and sharing your badassness with us. Best of luck on your game kind sir.
He does excellent work, he describes his methods clearly and in a way that's a pleasure to experience, and there's every indication that he's a great guy. I hate him.*
*kidding, world
'You come to a point in the river where there's a crack in the water. The water's suddenly darker and greener when you pass the crack.'
Me (predicted)
I'm really digging this new bendy terrain series. Thanks for the brilliant ideas.
Awesome! Looks great. Now let’s recycle our tires and plastic for big roads.
You can use water to keep from sticking to the silicone, but vinegar is your solvent, so that works well too.
Oooh. Good timing. I actually need to make something like this, so.... win.
Had some ideas for future projects. Different kinds of bridges. Stone, wood, rope, natural (tree fallen over or shallow area with rocks. With a strait edge of the mat you could do a beach (water on the strait edge and sandy or rocky style on the other}
if you need to get more modular with it you could just make one sacrificial river that you slice into triangles. Easily stackable and carriable.
I was waiting for these from what you’ve been working on.
You could make a beach front/ water edge with this technique as well. Great idea!
Rivers are probably the most important tetrain to be modular. They can totally change the way a battle in a wargame more than any peice of terrrain
I'm so happy someone is finally stepping up into the vacuum that Terranscapes left behind.
Awesome! Cant wait to try this!
This will be great for my blood river for idols of torment
Oh that sounds cool as hell
These rubber mat builds have been absolute game changers.
I'm loving these DIY innovation videos!
Very cool. This and the roads are something I'm going to have to try!
I’ve got so many idea from this. Thanks
It'd be interesting to do some perspective painting and make a wasteland ravine. Like more jagged rocks along the sides, then the center getting progressively darker as if to descend into darkness. Huh, also what about a bridge?
I love this. Keep these coming. So many ways this stuff could be used.
Looks good and very achievable, thanks for the tutorial.
I'm so glad this works for rivers. It looks amazing and gives off old school warhammer fantasy vibes
I just recently discovered your channel and I love the road and river projects! I have always wanted my own terrain and these videos make me feel like I can pull it off :)
Great job experimenting with all these different materials! Very useful, thank you!
VERY satisfying indeed.
BRAVO!!!!! You answered every question I had!!!!
It is lovely to watch a happy hobbyist enthusing over a project that has gone well. 😍👍
Great series on the flexible terrain, can't wait to see a full battle mat! It looks like you're having a lot more fun with the videos recently!
Know this was coming. So good to see still!
I use this exact rubber mat at work pretty often, It is an expendable! So I guess Ill have a reason to swipe some next time!
This is great stuff!! This rubber mat material will be a great base for so many things.I want to see a project using it for swamp terrain scatter next!
love it thank you.
This. Is. Awesome!!! Making this soon!
Great work once again.
Great work and great teaching!
looks absolutely fantastic, great work! Cant wait to try it out myself lol
Absolutely the kind of content that keeps me subscribed! Looks excellent!
I would love to see some way to make a mat like this with a grid. I personally think grids are dumb, but most of the folks I play with are traditionalists, so being able to make a cheap gridded play mat would be super useful.
If you just wanted a flat mat with no added elevated areas or texture, just paint it up, spray it with a light clear coat, then let it dry overnight. Then use a sharpie to mark your grid lines with a straight edge, and you're ready to rock. You'd then use the other terrain bits to make it more than just a big mat of graph paper ;)
Really enjoying this series. I hope you're enjoying making the videos. I'm honestly looking forward to trying this out this summer.
Love your vids dude, your approachable laid back style really helped me get into building my own scenery. Keep up the good work 💪
BMC .. You change the game. On behalf of every DM, Storyteller, Keeper, and so forth: We thank you for these gifts to our art.
Awesome work mate, love these.
I have been waiting years for this pair of videos and you did not disappoint. Phenomenal work as always Jeremy!
Windex makes for really great and easy silicone clean up 👍😉
These ultra flexible terrain pieces are great sir. Thank you for all you have given us, the community.
Creativity is 1% inspiration and 99% drying time 😁
Cant wait to see the full battle mat video!
That silicone caulking uses moisture in the air to cure, so adding water-based inks and a wet glove will actually help it dry faster!
I'm enjoying these "cheaper" projects and have been learning a lot. Thanks for the break from the more elaborate foam cutter builds.
Hell yeah! That's dope!
Very cool indeed. Thank you! 👍👍👍
Epic, I love it❤❤❤
I think I'll try this on baking paper. Put some paintable acryl down, smooth it, put some sand and stuff on it and apply silicone on top, then when all is said and done, I'll try to remove the paper. Just to see how it turns out and if I can make it even thinner.
Oh wow... Imagine making Carcassonne tiles in this style? 6" or 1’ squares? That would be nuts.
You madman. I'd split the difference and go with like 8" tiles, but oh hell yeah.
I think i may try to combine this with your cave tiles idea, and make a series of 3x3 tiles that will let me make any river path I need.
Smart!
This is the best series
Looks good - better than the blue duct tape I'm using! Good show!
Looking forward to seeing what else you make with the floor mat! I'm considering getting some myself and trying to make a big dramatic volcanic battle mat with some modular lava pools
More nice work Jeremy! Yes, the waterfall could definitely be another successful episode in this series! Almost a return to early days with simple tools and materials - love it!
Another brilliant video!
wow perfect !!
This is super cool and is exactly the sort of thing I am subbed for! Great project and can't wait to see what sort of battlemat options you can produce!
This is so awesome!!!
i love these things, will have to check my local Bunnings to see if they have these mats or something equivalent there
Definitely heading to HD to try and obtain some of this recycled gold. Awesome build as always. Cheers!
I love the balance of portability, durability, dimension and realism you've achieved on these. Excited to see the battle boards
Absolutely love what you've been doing in these last several videos, man. Great stuff! My order of a similar 1'x5' piece of rubber mat got here just half an hour ago.
I really like that you pursue whatever you feel drawn to pursue with your art/this channel. By all means, keep doing you and having fun. Though I have to admit that this recent back-to-basics of creatively tackling DIY TTRPG terrain elements has brought me back to your channel after a year or so away. I'm glad to see videos that engage me more, but I hope your other stuff has (and continues) done well too.
Incredible stuff, dude. You're the reason I've gotten into this hobby. I'm still in the beginning stages, but I'm having a blast thanks to you 🎉
Jeremy, your content is the best out there. You are real and you want to help. I love the fact that sometimes you show a failure and what you learned from it. I make more dioramas that anything else but man, you are the best to learn from on so many different levels. Keep up the great work!
Finding you was a brilliant moment in the algorithm. THANK YOU. I love these so much and can't wait to get started on making my own.
This river is exactly what I imagined after your road video. Lovely work!
Sure, this doesn't look hyper-realistic, but when you set that down on your table there will be no question that it is a river. And that is what we often want out of our table terrain.
These terrain pieces are absolutely incredible! With the correct mats these must blend in perfectly and look so nice. I'm glad that your quest to make the perfect funny floppy roads is finally complete!😂
Looks awesome!
Hell yeah! I'm really digging this series, and while I love the bigger and more complex builds in general, these simpler builds with fewer "ingredients" are great. It makes it feel truly attainable for someone who is relatively new to terrain like myself. Cheers!
Cool as always.
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
I was searching for something that i could use to make transparent ice. Thanks to you i will Test Silicon 😊
Great video can't wait to see the battle mat you make
can't wait for that next video
Very cool. Want to play with that silicone for water stuff in general!
Just watched this while sitting here sketching, the epiphany at the end was just amazing!!!! Lol! You are an inspiration Sir!
Another superb project!
Great vid, thank you! I'd love to see some sci-fi builds with this material! Roadways, landing strips, etc.
Hell ya! Rivers looking good, worth considering doing myself.
Great inspiration. I don't know if I will use that material to make rivers, but I think I would be great to make small lakes or ponds. Or even some swamps. It would be also good form marking area terrain which is easy to recognize.
That is what I am *TALKIN'* `bout!
great technic and result! also i just cant not say it: you look and feel so happy in this video, it radiates good vibes :- D thanks for sharing
Man, it really feels like old days of the channel. Simple, cheap and efficient terrains. I'm about to run a viking game where the players will travel between snowy terrains and green grass generic terrain so the river bank would look out of place in one of the two places. I'd really like to see how it looks without the river bank, so if you really want to do them without, don't hesitate to post them up.
That being said, man, you really hit a goldmine there, keep being creative, it will pay out for your channel ! Congrats !
Amazing 😮😮😮
I love these videos! Thank you so much! Do you think they would work to make modern roads for games like marvel crisis protocol?
Looks good and thin, yet durable, the sweet spot for a modular piece to be placed on top of the table while suggesting erosion into the surface
Awesome vid! I didn’t quit like the cartoonish look tbh but I changed it up a little and it looks awesome thanks man, and keep up the amazing work
