I Bought the CHEAPEST "Gaming" Power Supply on Aliexpress... (NOT Recommended By Power Supply Gurus)

  • Today we check out a power supply from Aliexpress that comes delivered to your door for $24 international, which at this price does make it certainly appealing... if the 500 "watt" rating that they give it checks out. So today we couple with a few different pairs of graphics cards and an old school i7-2600 / h61 and 16gb of ram, to see if it will completely fail, or if its a hidden little bargain, especially to those who can't get access to good prices.
Check out the power supply here (Disclaimer** it is NOT recommended by power supply gurus): s.click.aliexpr...

I have been informed that pro power supply gurus have tested this and say it has a lot of ripple and won't hold properly over 265 true watts. So a little over 300 from the wall. Will it work for budget builds? Sure but probably best to get something a little more expensive.

It have working overheating sensor, it's very good, only problem is 500W label, but if You switch it to 200W it will be pretty good office choice.
Also for builds like "XP-retro" it is also fine, for some videocard like GTX 750 (55w) and CPU like i3-4xxx (54w) it will be more than enough. Tho I am curious what is that hot thingy in there, maybe there is a way to do something about it (fit some kind of radiator on it or something, or if it's a simple transistor even replace for better one)

I'm from Italy, but I have been able to access some good psu too sometimes, besides good wines.
Anyway, this test is seriously flawed in two aspects.
1)Wall Power meter for measuring power output for THIS kind of psu is an unreliable method. We can see a 115/230V input switch on it, this means VERY VERY VERY old architecture, no active PFC, so passive PFC or - very probably since it weighs 850g - no PFC at all. This means very low efficiency levels (maybe 70% or less) so if you measure 400w at the wall, the real power output of this PSU to the pc is very probably less than 300w. And we don't have a 80Plus certification obviously, so it is impossible to determinate the efficiency and calculate the internal power provided. That's why you should use controllable fixed or variable loads for testing - because that way, you know how much load you are putting on the Psu - not a pc.
    2) All of the quality aspects of this PSU, both constructive and electric, including voltages and ripple while under heavy load, are completely ignored. The pc is on > the psu is good? I really don't think so.
    Bye

if you put the time and research into it you can snatch some pretty good and cheap PSUs that cheap out in optics.. like unpainted and industrial looking with no cable sleeves, no cable mods, and just ugly colored cables..
I remember a "great wall" psu that did fit perfectly into that criteria .. it was really cheap but did have most of the features and all the important safety features needed, with good performance and components and reliability. and then I heard people saying _Uhh great wall, that is some unsafe low quality china shit_ .. well they have bad ones and good ones and they produce for a lot of other "brand names" so saying that means that you are a sheep that just has no clue...

in developing country like Indonesia (my country) the main cause of PSU failure would be voltage ripple and bad grounding.. so we must use Stabilizer or UPS in order to make the voltage stable..
that is why it is better for us to use good power supply, at least 80+ bronze from good manufacturers, with OCP and OVP protection..
oh and i remember about your video when you went to korea, and saw REX brand.. actually i saw a lot of korean brand PSU in our online market (used ones).. and i use one of that for my work PC (my main rig is using FSP 400W 80+ Gold, 2U form factor, just to be safe).. it's going for about 2 years now and it's still doing a good job.. in my opinion going for ex-korea PSU is better than buying new but untrusted brand PSU..

All can fry, just avoid Rosewill, their 1000w Hive nuked my $250 SSD and they refused to pay damages... max load was never even above 80% rating, it was over $100 PSU. Then their 1000w glacier failed at 630w at the wall, tripped over current protection, so single rail 12v my @$$ (when the hive crapped itself, half my connectors stopped working... hmmm, single rail? Really?!? Even that was a lie!)
Now I spent the same $250 my SSD cost on an HX1200i and it delivers 1350w output 24 hour loading (basically silent, like 600 rpm fan overloaded like that), which is 1500w at the wall and it has no issues. Even my $130 SuperNova 1300 units are fine pulling 1.7kW from the wall (110v, so it would be even more on 220v).
I don’t cheap out on PSUs, but sadly even the pricier ones are crap....

Jake Garrett Rosewill is a garbage brand in my opinion, I've purchased three of their products and they either just didn't work or only partially worked. Like their card reader/USB hubs my roomate wanted...the two USB ports worked on one but the card reader never worked at all and she wanted a car reader for her didgital camera. Thinking it was a fluke I ordered her a second card reader without USB but just never worked at all, it was dead out of the box. I just avoid all the cheap brands these days and there is no way I'd ever trust a Rosewill PSU in any PC I build. I've never had a Thermaltake, Cooler Master or EVGA PSU fail, maybe I've just been lucky but I read a lot of user and tester reviews these days before buying any PC part these days.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 4 роки тому

Jennifur68 yeah I figured at that high price they would have been fine in terms of quality but I was wrong... “you get what you pay for” definitely isn’t true as my SuperNova 1300 wasn’t much more ($29 more), and those are full modular and way higher power output, just way better units at similar price. So yeah, definitely go with good brands and look at Johnny Guru reviews because it’s definitely worth spending a tiny amount extra to get a way better product and not destroy your computer (which I thought the Rosewill should have fine but definitely wasn’t the case!)
I’ve only had 1 Thermaltake, but it was a cheap $30 TR2 500w model. It lasted like 2 years and then bit the dust slowly. It gave me warning that it was dieing though, Crysis 3 killed it, lol! So I was still able to do my school work while I waited in a better PSU to come in. So not too bad, it didn’t take components with it and failed gracefully, about as good as you could ask of a failing unit. But now I just run expensive units so I hopefully won’t have that problem (HX1200i testbench and 2x SuperNova 1300 on my main system)

  • @Vader294

You need your head testing if you buy one of those PSUs and plan on using it in your pc.
A PSU tester with the able to just test voltage, is more or less useless because It's easy to make a PSU that can supply 12v, with a constant load. The issue is that computers are almost never under a constant load so if the PSU can't keep up, they'll be a voltage drop on the output. Basically it could mean the motherboard has to work harder to try and compensate but this will lead to a premature death of the motherboard. I haven't even mentioned voltage ripple.
Basically PSU testing is very intensive. I like this channel but I feel sometimes the lack of knowledge can lead to some really bad advice.

I have to say, as an electrical engineer I am a bit offended by this video. I love your videos for their detail and the "no-bullshit" factor. Debunking the myths.
However it should be done correctly.
I would love to see an actual analysis of this unit (take off the lid, show the parts, and show which ones got extremely hot.) Name the core components (Main switching Transistors, chokes and especially the capacitors).
If you want to dig even deeper, look at the datasheet of the hot component and see if the temperature is higher than the rated value.
Most transistors/Triacs are rated at 125C, so 120C is almost too hot.
PS: I totally agree with the "crusty chokes" failure mode. If they got damaged once, it will just get worse over time. The PSU typically smells a bit like crayons if this failure is kicking in slowly. At one point the isolation is burned completely and the choke will short, which might kill PC components
Greetings from a long time viewer ;)

My personal experience with power supplies is. If you want to use them for a decent amount of time you don't have to go overboard but just stick to something at least decent. The bottom of the barrel ones besides fake power ratings can have things like sleeve bearing fans may very well die way too fast. Then there is also the risk of a power supply taking another component with it. I have seen that happen with a gpu and motherboard on one build.
My experience has mostly been office pc's without dedicated graphics to speak of but I have build over 100 of them a lot of which are running for at least 4 years.

Overheating, surges, etc., can compromise equipment that costs far more than a decent power supply. If I needed to save money I'd look for a quality used model, from a seller with decent reviews, before buying the cheapest generic PSU I could find.

  • @mariushmedias
    @mariushmedias 4 роки тому +5

Why don't you include pictures or footage of internals, so that some people could give you more details about real capabilities of psu?
The psu is not worth buying at that price. The voltage selector at the back is a good indication that it's an ancient design, without power factor correction, which probably doesn't reach 80% efficiency... while the psu claims it has two 12v rails each with some upper current limit, chances are there's no such separation and the concentrated heat in that point (to 120c and over) makes me think there's a single set of diodes rectifying the 12v.
Such diodes are typically rated for 150c or higher so 120c would technically be safe, but if it's made by a small time asian manufacturer I wouldn't trust my whole PC on that single part.
Also, it's not a good sign for life time of psu: at this price, the psu comes with electrolytic capacitors rated for 1000-2000h @ 105c ... it's said you double life of such capacitors for every 10c decrease in ambient temperature. So let's say 2000h capacitors will have 4000h@95c, 8000h at 85c, 16000h @ 75c.
If that component is sitting at 120c on the heatsink, heat will radiate through circuit board and through air in the psu case to these electrolytic capacitors and the ambient temperature will be near 75c or even higher... you're basically cooking the capacitors and degrading them ... 8000 hours is less than one year of operation.
It also seems like they used AWG20 wires to save money... that's additional voltage drop on the cables. Measure the voltages using a multimeter at the actual connectors (EPS, 24pin on motherboard side and PCI-e 8pin on video card side) to see how much voltage sags ... the psu tester will not show those voltage drops as there isn't high amount of current passing 1m+ of wire like in the case of video card or cpu input.

    • @dycedargselderbrother5353

Another hint of an ancient design is the mere claim of dual 12V rails. That went out of vogue years ago. I'm surprised the 5V rail supports only 10A. High 5V amperage is another usual giveaway but not in this case (though 10A is awfully low even for a modern power supply). I don't think I'd use this thing for anything more than to power fans. Even if the equipment is cheap, it's still a pain in the ass to replace it in the case of a disaster. I'd rather just spend more money than risk everything.

A great alternative for those who are looking for something with a single rail and some genuine full load testing etc having been done this year is the Thermaltake Litepower 650w. They're available for approximately $40 which is still 30% cheaper than the next cheapest 80+ rated power supply with a single rail that has been tested with a REPUTABLE test suite.

Might also wanna bump the 500 µF to 1500 µF

In indonesia, which is where i lived, most common people like low end economical tier, did not use branded power supply. In fact most internet caffe use those el cheapo included on case psu. Or some use cheap used ex korea branded psu. Our specs mostly low end anyway so it doesn't really matter for me at least. Still using el cheapo psu maybe around 10 dollars. It used pc i use, probably 2-3 years the user before me had use it. Still working fine core i3 3420 and rx 460. The psu fan is freaking loud. So i put a resistor to reduce it.
I do and always do recommend people to buy good psu if the have the budget.
In some region of indonesia, branded psu such as corsair, seasonic, etc is a premium thing. Psu is won't likely to explode, even the cheap on had some protection in it. When some thing go wrong it will shut off, or fuse will be blown. Even that's rarely happen. Cuz nobody stupid enough to put together a crappy el cheapo with a gtx 1080 tier 🤣.

It's a bad idea. Imagine it being in a case? Ha it's really a 300w max no?

The one thing I'm wondering is can you modify the power supply a little to get better cooling on the parts that need a heat sink

I often attach an extra 80mm fan outside the psu exhaust grill . Looks odd & noisy but does the job . This is for my non-RGB clients who keep the "black box" under the desk :))

This power supply is getting enough air. The problems of it are fundamental to its construction. It's not worth it, it's not safe, best don't touch it.
However something that i did notice is that reputable supplies use an air guide that blocks off a part of the fan near the rear grill, and forces higher air pressure and velocity elsewhere

@@SianaGearz I was more or less thinking on replaceing the heat sinks with better one's so the cooling is more effective or replace the components that are running too hot with higher-quality ones.
      as for safety, it fine.
as long as you don't do stupid crap and you follow the appropriate procedures messing with high voltage and amps.

@@SilverX95 There's probably an unheatsunk rectifier diode package in the primary which flares up on the thermal, this is what it looked like to me with limited visibility. You could attach the heatsink to it...
But this hardly solves the issue because then just something else will pass out. I mean YesMan's statement that it has thermal probes all over the thing is patently wrong, there's never more than one, and it's always in the secondary, and as long as the rectifier isn't outright dead (which might happen eventually), it's not it erroring out the PSU, it's something else. You'll just spend your life rebuilding the power supply trying to iron out its issues and it still will never be good.
By "it's not safe" i don't mean "you will electrocute yourself", if you just think about what you're doing you'll avoid death and injury easily enough. By "it's not safe" i mean you can't trust anything in this power supply to be of high quality and correspond to safety norms. There are numerous components quality of which is critical, the transformers, the X/Y capacitors, and you just can't assume that they're good.

Completely agree with Siana on all -- ALL -- the points he mentioned . PSU is not a toy & shouldn't be tinkered with -- like NEVER .

    0:10 I'm Italian and laughed a little.
You really have to look for good offers, like normal price instead of above MSRP.

I use a generic powersupply worth 10$ partnered with my gtx750ti so far so good its already been more than a year with no problems
