- As both a fan of EDC philosophy and the original Apple Watch I thought I would offer some discussion on the rather divided opinion on Apple Watch among EDC enthusiasts.
I look at the unique set of features that I find so appealing about the original Apple Watch and then explore the new features and value proposition of the Apple Watch Ultra.
I also explore some more philosophical points that seem to overlap here in terms of software freedom and Apple's approach.
By the way EDC stands for Everyday Carry - it is a community/philosophy/idea that encompasses the generally obsessive hobby of refining the gear we carry on our person every day. It is taken very seriously by those who enjoy the process of selecting the right things. The action button could automatically trigger deeper app actions based on time of day, location, etc... But that would be akin to Android/Linux.
Arguably the Apple Watch like most all Apple products is the opposite of quick and convenient: it's simple and slow, just like a single winding, one way 25mph highway that leads to every location on a continent. You can't mess it up, you're not going to have issues crashing, your grandmother might be able to use it.... But the system is excruciatingly busted compared to something with a higher learning curve due to the complexity that makes it fast and efficient.
To be fair, the whole smart home system and UI design is busted on both ends when it takes longer to turn on a smart light with a watch than to flip a switch, and Google has already killed what would be the best smartwatch feature: to do things and show you information as it's needed, not when asked, but before.
6:10 The Apple Watch and most phones could easily survive more drops if you made them from carbon fiber with POLED screens and a factory installed glass protector. They'd be lighter too.
Same with the watches. I don't think it's greed, I think it's being a slave to design. Form f****** function is like a creed to the cancerous aestheticysts that Google and Apple employ.
Glad they have a mic array that can triangulate the position of the audio source and do comparisons and denoising I imagine.
Keep in mind, the microphones are ridiculously small and incredibly cheap, and it is laughable that thousand dollar phones don't pick up your voice when you say a trigger word as easily as ultra low end smart speakers.

This was super interesting to me! I like my Apple Watch, but I’m not really into the true EDC mindset. I do carry more-or-less the same stuff every day, but most of it’s in a backpack that is certainly annoying/intrusive at times. I need a big bag for work and hate switching between bags (or going bag to pockets back to bag) so now i’m just … here. I look forward to seeing the new EDC video, though!
Will be wearing my Ultra daily all day and night. Painting cars for a living.
Looking forward to the new EDC system video. Not enough people talk about the way they carry stuff. Half the fun for me is working out an efficient system that balances utility with comfort and ease of access.

Interesting how many people are using this comment section to complain (legitimately) about apple. While I have my own reasons to drop apple those went out the window when I saw the ultra.
I am a huge believer in EDC. my family and friends would certainly testify that I am always the guy who has that thing you need - a charger or a pocket knife or whatever. I also am trying to adopt a minimalist lifestyle which means I have to make tough choices about what I carry around with me.
I just visited Italy and found you can use Apple Pay virtually everywhere. So very quickly I started walking around with just my watch and rejoiced in the freedom of shorts and sneakers in the summer heat - no wallet bulging in my pocket.
So when I saw the ultra has the extra battery life and durability my series 3 was lacking I bought one on the spot.
I was already signing up for PADI and getting my scuba certification so it is an exciting bonus to have a dive computer on my wrist.
I just lost over 100 pounds and use my watch to track calories burned and use that data to calculate how much food to eat and still hit my daily weight loss targets. I will probably always track this going forward so a fitness tracker is a must.
Finally I am rediscovering the joy of an active lifestyle and am excited to have a really good “coach” on my wrist and I hope the new features announced with OS9 will make this even more fun!
So to respond to your question - does this meet your EDC needs and will it work for me as a fitness device I would say YES and I can’t wait for it to arrive sept 23!

One of the features I will use on my Apple Watch Ultra is the sleep monitor. You mentioned that you sleep with your watch. Can share how you prepare for sleep from the point of making sure you have enough battery? Will sleep work in low power mode?

Yeah on my series 5 I charge at fairly random points in the day. If/when I get an Ultra hopefully I can into a more normal routine with it. There are certain points in the day where it would be ok to charge when I know I can get by without it on. Early morning and late evening are usually fine (need them both with the series 5 with its aging battery!).

I have a series 7 that I really like so I don't have a need to upgrade but I do find the Ultra cool. Like you I like the adventure aesthetic and the battery life. Unfortunately it seems too big. I obviously haven't tried it on but 49mm seems huge. Hope they come out with a smaller 46mm in the future
Yeah I must say I’m pretty concerned by the size. I will definitely be trying on first - I have tiny wrists too.
My hope is that they release a smaller ultra in the future. I think I have a medium wrist, but I wear a 41mm size because it feels like a decent “watch” size. The 45mm version looks too much like a tablet to me already, so 49mm (plus the bigger case) would likely be comical. I do find the updated bezel and added button very appealing, though. I would accept a normal battery-life in return for a better size.
It's tough for me to want to part with my $15 low-profile Casio F91W! But whenever Ben starts talking about EDC and tech, I lean in a little bit closer and listen carefully.

I use a BangleJS 2, mostly because it is hackable, so you can write your own apps for it with javascript and because it has an always on daylight display, so I have to charge it only between every one to two weeks depending on usage.
I never had a pebble watch, but some people say this is the spiritual successor of it.
But as you said, a watch/device is highly subjective so it really depends what you want to do with it and if the device limits you with that.

@@AlbertoNoys Nice, if you have some questions I'll try to answer them. The community isn't that big, because it's a niche device, so there aren't many reviews out there. But there are great apps from the community, also a pebble watchface that I use.
Being a huge Peter McKinnon fan and loving his edc I knew what was going on. Great insights on the ultra. I’ve watched loads of ultra videos and think it’s a massive step forward for apple. Keep up the great vids and glide over the neysayers and anti apple keyboard warriors.
My iPhone 14 pro max is on the way and after many years on android I’m now fully invested over the last few years with iPhones AirPods iPads and iwatchs. Once u commit it’s hard to turn your back on it.

I’d suggest you look at the Garmin instinct as a practical EDC alternative. Has many of the health tracking sensors of the Apple Watch - apart from ECG. Incredible battery life with solar backup. Truly an EDC watch. It obviously been designed for function - the monochrome screen being an example. However as a result it looks like a cheap Casio. Consequently it doesn’t attract the prestige market that the Apple Watch does. Online reviewers generally are very complimentary of it - and it’s android and IOS compatible.
The trouble with those kinds of things is they just have the integration with apple stuff. Smooth connections with Bluetooth devices (let alone an interface that makes choosing music or podcast smooth enough) and cellular connection for use without a phone nearby etc are all very strong points for Apple Watch.
@@BenVallack I have owned 2 apple watches and sold them both. They simply didn’t add anything to my life aside from constant interruptions and the need to recharge. Without a charge the device doesn’t even fulfil its EDC primary purpose - which is to tell the time. A watch such as the Instinct can be put into dumb mode and will it never run out of power and still have the ability to tell the time. The Apple Watch ultra had 36 hours of power - that’s a day and a half not 3 days as apple indicate. Surely one of the fundamentals of EDC is KISS. Keep It Simple.
A good example a user of an EDC watch where the user relies on it is the military. The military do use the instinct, they don’t wear apple watches.
The instinct does have music controls by the way.
@@andyburns6496 for me EDC should be something that is tuned to individual circumstances. In essence it’s about carrying the most useful combination of items that is practical for your use case. For me I know I will almost always be able to charge my watch enough for it to not run out (at least I’m hoping that’s the case with the Ultra, time will tell). Telling the time is the minimum I need on my wrist but the idea of having all kinds of additional utility at a glance is super appealing, as long as there isn’t the associated compromise. I agree the battery life on the older ones is certainly approaching that level of compromise but I’m hoping the Ultra deals with that.

Great follow up. Since you touched on the whole red light thing I wanted to comment on something that people get wrong all the time (although it's only tangentially related to the red watch face, but it irks me that his idea is so pervasive).
There's this trend that people activate blue light filters when they use their devices in the evening/at night, because "blue light prevents sleep". There's some evidence to support that claim, but total brightness has a much MUCH bigger impact, and people are somehow ignoring that. So if someone is enabling blue light filters two hours before they go to bed, while still sitting in a brightly lit living room, then that filter isn't going to do anything for them. Same goes for the display brightness itself. A blue light filter isn't going to do much if you still have your screen at 100% brightness.
That really has nothing do with night vision, or the red watch face, but I'm almost certain that people will conflate the two things and take it as further evidence for the blue light filters on their phones and laptops. For the people that are saying "but it works for me, so it has to be true", it's much more likely that you enabled the filter because you grew conscious of your sleep hygiene and are actively doing something to correct your bad sleeping habits. As a result you're sleeping better, but it's easy to think that the filter is doing all the work.
These filters do work, but dimming the lights is much more important.

Personally I find it hard to give useful feedback on smartwatches because I have never taken to wearing watches in general. I would have thought that EDC folk would be interested in the kind of quick access they provide but maybe they find it redundant in some way. Could be with more robust build quality and battery life increasing that they will catch on more, I don't know.
Overall great video as always! I've had an Apple watch in the past and I never recommend it to people. The reason behind this is because of it's lack of compatibility with Android and the way they treat their customers.
My wife's Apple watch got bricked during an update, Apple wanted to charge $250 USD just to resolve an issue their software caused.
We now run Garmin Venue 2 watches and haven't looked back.
I do hear these kinds of stories from time to time and it’s disheartening for sure. My personal experience with their devices has generally been extremely positive and I’ve only rarely been treated poorly. I’ve had a lot of gear from them over the years and pushed the lifecycle way past warranty on much of it (7 years for a MacBook Pro etc). I see they have moved to very long software support cycles for their phones now as well so I do think they are moving in the right direction.

Nah. I'll stick to my G-Shock. Going on adventure I'd rather distance myself from the constant barrage of notifications and live view of my house rather than keep it literally on my person.
I also want to ensure nobody is stealing my wheelie bins. I have 4 security cameras on mine with AI.

you speak so fast in your video. and the lack of a noticable pause between sentences and segments makes the whole video feel very rushed. it almost felt like you took one super long breath and did a 14+ minutes speech at one go.
the whole viewing experience improved signficially when i slowed down the video to 0.75 x speed.

I chose to not support any Apple products years ago, right around when I subscribed to Louis Rossmann, and I started to be more conscious about right to repair and the, in my opinion, morally wrong tactics they use to screw their own customers (and the environment in the process). To be clear, I know they're not the only ones that do these kinds of things, but with Apple it's so blatantly obvious.
I’m a fan of Luis Rossman too - and I’m very interested in the right to repair movement and very weary of the corporate trends that are against it. However it does look like as a result of Luis etc that Apple are now making repair more accessible in some areas and they do seem very hot on recycling. There is a cost implication to doing a lot of things ‘their way’ and that does put the environment burden on the consumer (I.e consumer has to choose to spend similar money repairing to going to a new device, which is more fun but less good for environment). But I’m also a big fan of the insane technological progress that has been possible using Apple’s approach, in terms of design, performance and experience. I’d rather support them but also support people who are being vocal about how they should be better rather than a blanket boycott which I don’t think really gets us further forward. If they’re at the top they should be encouraged to lead by example.
@@BenVallack Of course, that's a choice everyone gets to make on their own, I wasn't trying to make it seem that my way was the only way nor was I imparting judgement on anyone that chooses to use their products, sorry if it came out that way.
I guess what I was just trying to say is that for me, their wrongdoings and poor attempts to mitigate them (when they could clearly do much better) still weigh more in my purchasing decisions than the innovation they are bringing to the table.
I understand your point about supporting both ends but I still see my purchase as incentivizing their behaviour, which is ultimately what I don't want. I would agree with that argument if both parties, Apple and the right to repair movement, were at the same level, but clearly one has much more power than the other. And precisely because they are at the top and because they're a 2.44 trillion dollar company they have no excuse to not be better than this. Am I naive? Perhaps. But it's the only thing I can do.
And please, don't take it as an attack or anything like that, I'm a huge fan of you and your videos, Ben. It's amazing to see someone taking a meticulous approach to seemingly mundane things that I deeply care about when most people don't.

@@AlbertoNoys Exactlt, and in the end all the DIY keyboard manufacturers are also companies that want to make money. Imagine they would act like apple and make the DIY part as hard as it is to repair apple products, that would be horrible and only few tech savvy people would have fun at all.
I think a lot of EDC people value self reliance and independence. A smart watch tends to make people dependent not independent. You can't be without a link to the herd.
Too bad Apple hates your guts if you use Android. They make great products.
I honestly don’t understand this idea - the whole point of Apple products is how well they work as part of their ecosystem. If you don’t start with the iPhone the value proposition for their other products is seriously compromised. If you’re interested in some non-iPhone product you will love how good the iPhone is!!
@@BenVallack I totally get it. The closed ecosystem with the amazing integration makes apple products so great. But I have the feeling that Apple blocks out integration with other devices just to lock their users in. If I want Airpods I'd like to be able to update the firmware even when I use an Android. Or when I buy a Mac Studio display I'd like to change the settings without also needing a Mac computer. I understand that I won't have the same features as an Apple user, but I'd at least like basic functionality. And truth be told, if the Android companies would step up their game I wouldn't even have a need to go Apple.
