John Stockton is easily top 5. He was a ten-time All Star, led the league in assists a record nine consecutive seasons, and holds the single-season record for assists with 1,164. At the time of his retirement, Stockton held the NBA career record for assists and steals with 15,806 and 3,265 respectively. Stockton never missed the playoffs in his nearly two decades playing for the Jazz. He had a 51.5 career shooting percentage and with a reliable three-point shot (38.4% lifetime average). As of today, he is 55th on the all-time NBA scoring list with 19,711 career points. So he would be about 55/5000 of the total NBA players to ever play. He was one of the chosen few to be selected to play on the dream team. So hes 55th of 5000 NBA players in scoring all time, most assists ever, most steals ever, two finals appearances vs Jordans Bulls, dream team, 10 time all star.

CP3 would not have cooked Stockton. John was one of the mentally toughest players, consistently among the league leaders in steals and by all accounts very strong, scrappy, hyper competitive despite his quiet demeanor and maybe the best fundamentals of any player ever. What about GP, defensive player of the year 96'. Champion, led another team to the finals and elite 2 way player... does defense matter? If it does, the list has to include Magic, Isaiah, Steph, Stockton and then the last slot would be between Kidd and Payton for me. Last 3 might be the best for an all time team starting line up too, cause you wouldn't necessarily need their scoring on that type of squad. Something to think about...

Prior to TP the Point Guard was Avery Johnson, who I loved, but I’ll tell ya.. Avery Johnson was no where near the scorer that Parker was. Also.. George Hill was also the point for a while and he didn’t have the finishing skills Parker had. Deron Williams was rated above Parker and no where near the finisher Parker was. TP’s floaters and spin move finishes were unmatched! Not even Steve Nash nor CP3 had those moves. Duncan or any other big set high screens for the on ball defenders but Parker still had to finish over the rotating big(usually scoring on a double team)where his floater was a killer or he scored driving and shielding the ball with his body. Even without the screener Parker mostly attacked and penetrated from Iso plays. His finishes on fast breaks were all him attacking with contact or completely freezing the defender(s) with his over the top crossover or that spin move!
      Humble that!

Debating the greatest of all time in a team sport is always a moving target. MJ couldn't get to the finals without all NBA caliber help but once he got to the finals with the right help, all-time great help, then he was a beast. Beast. LeBron got to the finals with a team that MJ could never have taken to the finals. But once in the finals LeBron couldn't handle it the way MJ handled it.

Mike led the league in scoring for basically a decade. He carried a team just as well as LeBron. The worst player in the league is just way closer to LeBron in 2010 than the worst player in the league was to Mike in 90. The floor was raised over time. Shit, for a lot of those years in the 90's Mutumbo was a top 15-25 player and he's basically just a better Mitchell Robinson.
Look at the Heat in 2011. 3 top 15 players and lost in the finals. Ask yourself if there was a world in which a team with Mike, Stockton, and Hakeem EVER comes close to losing a series in the 90's. Role players (like the ones that were on Dallas) are infinitely better now than they were in the 80's-90's and it makes it far easier for a single star to carry a team to good results.
If this wasn't true, LeBron's finals record would be far better. His biggest issue in the finals is just being able to carry teams that shouldn't be there to the finals where he inevitably runs into a better team. In 87-88' Mike wins a playoff series with Rookie Pippen off the bench, a VERY old Artis Gilmore (who ends up being traded and then retiring after playing a year in Italy), and Horace Grant (rookie season and off the bench as well) as the other best players on the team.
His second leading scorer over the season is Sam Vincent, who averaged 7.8 ppg career lmao. Still took a game off Pistons in the second round too. The gap between role players and stars was just way bigger. Now you have 4th options capable of going off for 30 on every other team. That shit was unheard of when Mike played.

When Russ got traded out of okc everyone thought they’d be in the gutter but cp3 literally carried them to a better record than they had with Russ and pg13. Even take his mvp season. What’s 30+ ppg when you’re shooting 42% from the field? What’s 10+ assists when you’re averaging 6 turnovers? What’s 10+ rebounds when you’re literally stealing them from your teammates and not getting back on defense or running in transition to get an easy bucket. What’s all of that when every point you get for your team on offense you give right back up on defense? I’ve never seen anybody get beat on back door cuts to the basket as much as Russ does. Naw def should be considered top 5 but all time could also mean that you just played longer than everyone else. Magic has multiple finals appearances averaging the most assists per game. Lead his team to 5 championships with 3 MVPs. Technically played 12 seasons and was in 9 championships. Highest Assist per game average and top 10 in all time assists with the least amount of seasons besides maybe Isaiah Thomas.
