  • The light tower that loomed from above third base falls June 16, 2009, as demolition crews continue to destroy a stadium many knew as simply The Corner. For photos, history and more on Tiger Stadium, go to www.buildingsofdetroit.com. Thanks to Anthony for the video.

Heart wrenching. That stadium should still be standing!

Comerica Park resembles a giant Wok and it will never match what we had in Tiger Stadium. Our old stadium had countless quirks and intricacies and offered an intimate setting like no other ballpark. Some tried to have us believe the stadiums fault was that it was too old and it was falling apart. Just not true... if anything Tiger Stadium was over built and could easily have lasted well into the 21st century. A few tweaks here and there... And historic Tiger Stadium could have been hosting MLB games just as its sister stadium is today in Boston. So sad what we lost.

@@daleatkinson941 LOL a giant Wok. It kills me that the Stadium is gone. I see what Boston did with Fenway and what the Cubs did with Wrigley (before they turned it into a fucking casino) and they kept the charm. Even if they absolutely needed to upgrade, they could've done a better job. Look what Baltimore got when it put up a new stadium. But, we got Comerica.

All the legends who played there the best in the game that made their way through that stadium... What's so sad to hear that it was tore down...I have such fond memories of going to tiger games when I was a kid

I feel like crying. There goes my childhood memories. That stadium was built to stand forever. Just like the Statue of Liberty.

Would say that Tiger Stadium ranked right up there with the Statue of Liberty. Where's the Justice in the whole thing?

It must have been a pretty depressing day around there when the last light tower came down. If those things only had eyes and could talk.

Ok it was obsolete and probably crumbling in need of exorbitant repair and renovation - like Yankee Stadium - but NY built a replica Yankee Stadium. As an iconic historic ball park- a replica stadium should have been built. The single biggest mistake the Mike Illitch made in his amazing tenure in Detroit was to not insure to live on -the history and tradition of Tiger Stadium. Istead built the ANTI Tiger Stadium in Comerica Park. Complete opposite venue. If Boston or NY would have built a Comerica park they would have to tear it down and correct the mistake- but that mistake would never have happened. John Mchale who designed Comerica was all about himself- not Detroit and its history. He wanted his vision, his place so to speak. A disgrace. I read in one place in a small article, a witness said "Mike politely showed him the door" " and Mike said :he got a carte blanche and I didnt get results " Those are Mikes words.

Agreed, demolish Comiskey for U.S. Cellular was as dreadful as was demolish Tiger Stadium for Comerica. Two classic ballparks destroyed for two corporate named cookie cutters. It's not about location. It's about following the $...
