60009 'Union of South Africa' in the Surrey Hills | 'Belmond British Pullman' | 02.02.2019

- With time ticking on her boiler ticket, ex-LNER A4 Pacific no. 60009 'Union of South Africa' enters another, and possibly it's last year of mainline service, seen on the 'Belmond British Pullman' around the familiar Surrey Hills circuit (Victoria-Addlestone-Shalford-Redhill-Victoria) on February 2nd 2019.
This videos shows the 'A4' at the head of the Belmond firstly powering away from Chertsey station following a speed restriction, followed by the restart from the pathing stop at Addlestone Junction through Byfleet & New Haw, before the departure from 'Number 9's booked water stop at Shalford, as she begins to spiritually dig into the 1 in 100 climb of Gomshall Bank, passing Shalford East foot crossing. (The fire tanker due to meet the loco at Shalford did not turn up, and had top take water from a local fire hydrant vice the expected fire tanker, resulting in a 15 minute late restart - which she impressively made up within 15 miles of departure!)
