You are correct!
Sadly, most Catholics are unaware of this trap.
We need more teachings like this from lay people.
I appreciate your work 👍
Very well explained JD. I'm loving all you videos. Praise God!!
Brilliant Video. Thanks for putting this little snapshot together. Its perfect for addressing this issue in many western Catholic Schools that blindly use it and do not realise what they are playing with.
Thank you so much for this Dear brother. 😇🙏🙏
Thank you so much for analysing and explaining it in such detail. Praise God 🙏
Hey Thanks Smitha - Do you have Catholic friends who are into Yoga ?
Bravo 👏👏👏 And the last shot was great with the accompanying music

Thank you sir
Thank you . I was long waiting for a clarification on this subject
Thanks Chithira !! Please the video with your Catholic friends - We need to create awareness around this topic
Well explained for Catholics bcos it's against our teachings.

Hi Joseph, i truly like your channel and the work that you do.
Just sharing some of my observations regarding this topic.
I understand the apprehension in promoting Yoga, I am no fan of Yoga, but at the same time would like to pose some questions.
1. I think this is similar to the 'food offered to idols conundrum' St. Paul deals with in one of his letters. Faith of the individual can't be tarnished by anything external if one exactly convinced of where his heart is.
But, for the sake of the conscience of those who are weak, i may refrain.
2. I have studied Samkhya-Yoga philosophy in the seminary. The professor (a non Christian, a Kashmir Shaivist, actual practitioner of Yoga), had told us, that this International Yoga Day n all is a sham. One fan never attain the benefits of Yoga when doing it in the open(wearing any type of sports gear or clothes) and also in such multitudes. The postures are actually part of a way of life. If u believe in Samkhya philosophy n what it says about attaimment of MOKSHA, then only Yoga makes sense, coz its the means. She used to openly express her displeasure of Baba Ramdev n the types, the fancy yoga classes with the yoga mats, mentioning them as phonies.
The postures in themselves, even OM, doesn't have any magical powers.
So if u ask her, one who has gone to.the mountains a d spent days with hermits, practicing Yoga with them, people r only losing their sensibility by believing that doing Yoga by the beach is actually gonna help them.
3. I just happened to go through the comments. I liked the healthy discussion. Jst to.mention, some misunderstanding regarding the teaching capacity of Episcopal conferences. Bishops are the successors of Apostles, n an episcopal conference is a mini college of bishops. In the indian context, they have come up with whatever teaching. But doesn't mean we have to discount it also. Be critical about it - for sure.
U began the video, saying church is silent, n den u share some docs. But u seem to, based on ur research, end up kind of giving a definitive teaching.
Don't u think the Episcopal Conferences with the number of experienced personnel in missionary activities and theologizing would also have done their research? I know, unfortunately there are some priests and religious who propagate Yoga as the go.to solution for all.problems. (eg. De addiction, health issues). I irk the fact that such people r der, but they also r speaking from some tangible experience.
I wud suggest that you could reach out to some.of the priests who worked on the formulation of the KCBC document, n engage in a dialogue with them.
4. The documents of the Church in this regard. Also understand the influence of the Descartian duality that has influenced the western thinking and spirituality. That is why Eastern practices seem alien or esoteric, which in some cases is true.
5. I appreciate the concern of those engaged in the comments. I believe in unwavering christocentrism. But i must also say, i realised the technique of Shavasana, where one conciously focuses on and relaxes every single cell of ur body(figuratively), while lying down on d floor or on d bed. I remember, using it for a quick nap in d afternoon or to deal with my back pain. I wud tell Jesus, some new technique i have learnt, help me with my pain and i wud pray the Jesus Prayer along with focusing. Btw... Jesus Prayer has to doa lot with breath and rhyttm of the heart. (Another topic)
So u tell me, was it shavasan a or my faith in Christ that helped me go thru the pain? I know the answer for myself.
6. Just for my information, which are the alternatives to Yoga that have beem derived from catholic spirituality? U made a passing statement in the video.
7. I liked and disliked the fact, that u used a particular type.of background music to generate an emotive effect in ur viewers. It was a very smart move , at the same time, giving an impression that it is an extremely grave matter. Why i say this is for a simple reason, Jesus wil not ask us , if i did Yoga or not, he will ask whether I loved Him abover everything n everyone by loving him in the other? (Again, not condoning Yoga a something very valuable, but critically reflecting)
If you are reading this line, thank you for patiently going through the long comment.
God bless you for the beautiful work you are doing, the uniqueness of ur apostolate in the Indian Church.
Love n Prayers
Anish
On the spiritual aspect.. Meditate on Christ our Lord and invoke Him in every Yogic posture.
Yes I agree ☝️
you can meditate on Christ and say your prayers. Then get some other exercise to do why opt for yogic postures when they're wrong for you.
You are very right! Practicing Yoga, even without the spiritual background, 'just' as exercise, is a 'trojan horse'! Often people do not realise when spirits attach themselves to them as these spirits are VERY cunning!!! Not for no reason their boss is called 'deceiver'!
Even as a non Christian,
Don't practice Yoga!
Don't get deceived!
I have been present where people were delivered from the kundalini spirit, EVFN IF they only practiced Yoga for physical exercise reasons! That spirit has the form of a SERPENT! If THAT doesn't open people's eyes, than I don't know, WHAT does...
Don't fall for yoga's promisses! You pay a FAR BIGGER price, than you will be aware of!!!
And it isn't some random American answering this question either! Yeah, it matters for me to notice this, because who else can know about a particular culture than those who grew up in it. Thank you for this, I was genuinely looking for an insight on apologetics on yoga. Either for or against it. And what do you know? An actual man from India speaking about it in contrast to Christian faith.
Much love to you. I will now look through your channel.
Hey thanks Anzu, really appreciate your feedback and kind words ! Where are you from - Are you a Catholic ?
Thank you for you time on these very important matters, many catholic , think these practices are okay, but like you say it not
Exactly Lito !! A lot of Catholics in the west have readily accepted these practices
Amen to that brother
Exercises done apart from Yoga are not yoga. Song on Fire, you may be interested in our new video too on the history of the exercises and how they all existed before yoga ever incorporated them into its own practice in the mid 1900s. The postures were actually first used in programs like Swedish Gymnastics, Danish Gymnastics, YMCA Calisthenics, and other exercise programs. If you are interested in this history, check it out here. It's actually a fascinating history. ua-cam.com/video/3pjS74UU188/v-deo.html. Great job on your video.
👏
2:13 Isn't it very strange that Hinduism supposedly rejects the body and at the same time has developed a very sophisticated method of strengthening the body with yoga, while Catholicism supposedly affirms the body and at the same time has not developed a single sophisticated physical exercise?
If you look at the world through that glass, everything will be bad. Take the example of Ayurveda....There are some postures during treatment and it might have hinduistic roots.
It is only the attitude we accept it...
Our approach/ intent matters....
As you said in the beginning, Catholic Church is silent on the issue, then better not be prejudiced against it.
I dont think the Church is silent !! I have mentioned the documents in the video
@Mijita Chula If you do something with doubt in your mind, then you should stop. That is the right thing to do. It is on a personal level. If u think food offered to idols affect your faith, it will. Anyway, I am not interested in this discussion any further.
Sorry for the bad attitude. Didn't mean any offense to anyone here.
My doc recommended different exercises for my body pain, especially my core and spine. Many positions of yoga are very helpful for me. I need to stretch a lot and build stability. I'm Christian and I'm concerned if I won't do something wrong. I believe only on our Farher and the Holy Spirit and and I'm afraid of yoga background like energy, chakras, workship for hindu goddes and etc. I don't believe in that stuff. But is that enough? I see part of yoga - its positions as isometric exercises and I do my workout at home. I would never go to a yoga class. I don't meditate, I don't listen to the hindu music and etc. Is it ok? Am I opening energy levels and adore fake idols while I'm not intended and just doing asanas as an exercise? I pray to God for protection from evil and guidance. I'm very afraid of possessions and such things! I'm very stressed and thinking a lot about all this stuff nowadays. Please, I need your answer. Thank you!
Yoga is not exercise. The point of yoga is to awaken the Kundalini and have fun with that.
Thanks brother for explaining and underatanding yoga from the perspective of catholic. I've a lot of appreciation for the hard work done for this presentation. However, I've a correction, international yoga is celebrated on June 21, you had a slip of tongue.
Ya it was a slip ! Thanks 🙏 glad u enjoyed the video !!
I practice yoga A.D. a physical exercises not a yoga meditation. When I exercise I think of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Do you think its wrong?
Physical exercises are fine Rosy

Then why they teaching yoga at formation centre at rishikesh? My brother is a CMI priest he is also a yoga instructor
I am pretty sure they are not engaging with the spirituality behind Yoga ? Are they ?
Ans to the question : Can a Catholic practice yoga : 3:08
How can a posture connect to a philosophy?
Joseph Thanickal From what I have learned from other sources, apparently the postures are not innocent stretching exercises but rather connected to various deities in attempt to imitation and calling for connection with them. The postures are some sort of liturgy. However I don’t know; I do weightliftening and simple stretching. Praying I do in church or on my own without any special postures!
Sun salutation or surya namaskar is actually worshipping the sun God.
Did you watch video !! I have explained it
@@SongonFirecatholicIndia you have said it connects to the philosophy. But how does it connect. Because the community says it connects, should it connect?
@@jthanickal Ask any Yoga teacher !! They don't teach it without the philosophy _ Every Posture has significance
Only we Catholics do only yoga in this case u should see the muslims and Pentecostals why they do not do or ......

I agree this... I hate yoga ....it is against Christianity....
Why not find another physical exercise ? Nothing feels better then yoga. If we can get more in touch with ourselves through yoga wouldn't that bring us closer to God ? Sometimes I think Catholics could benefit from yoga. Maybe then they wouldn't be so uptight. I was actually introduced to yoga in Catholic school back in the 70s.
What feels good about Yoga ? If Yoga is just about Physical exercise then why dont a Catholic chose another form of Physical Exercise - Why insist on Yoga ?
@@SongonFirecatholicIndia Have you ever done yoga ? Not only does it make me feel energized like other physical exercises do. Its good for the body, mind and soul. I think better and feel very calm as a result. I feel more connected to myself. It's much more then a physical exercise. I truly believe yoga can make people better Christians. Growing up Catholic I've been around people who were uptight and nasty. They didn't seem very Christian to me. Am I supposed to be guided by these people ?
@@michaelalguire419 All physical exercises impact body mind and soul !! Whats special about Yoga ? ( I have not done YOga ) So you can educate me on that
@@SongonFirecatholicIndia Yes, you are correct, however yoga is much deeper. It's difficult to explain. You just have to do it. It realigns the body and makes you feel more connected to yourself and others. It's also very calming. It helps with emotions. It can rid the body of negative emotions. This is not a substitute for worshipping God however it certainly helps when one tries to live a good Christian life. Our refuge is Jesus, however that doesn't mean we shouldn't try to improve by being more connected to ourselves.
@@michaelalguire419 Why cant achieve all that by living a good sacramental life of the Church? Why do we need Yoga for that ?
bro you are having a hindu name "dinesh" why? isn't it against your religion lol
Yoga never helps christians to unite with their creator jesus christ...
Because jesus never said in the bible " Do yoga and unite with me "
But in John 6 : 56 Jesus said "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them"
That means the only way to unite with christ is by eat and drink his body and blood...
Yoga never helps a person to unite with jesus christ...✝️
Ppl left catholisam for hinduisum after practising yoga.. and there are catholics who grew deep into thier faith after practising yoga.
So let othes live thier own spritual life.
No need to lecture on what is right or wrong about yoga.
Dinesh, You are starting with an assumption that (1:16) 'Yoga Flows from Hinduism'.
How can you frame such a statement without knowing the origination of Yoga?
People were using Yoga long before the beginning of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. At a later stage only Yoga had become a part of Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. Patanjali Yoga started after 5BC only.
At the beginning stage, Yoga had no connection with any religion. Because literally there was no religion at that time.
Kerala Catholic Bishop's Council has recently released an excellent document on Yoga. As per that there is no problem in practicing Yoga as a mental and physical exercise. No need to take its theological aspect while doing Yoga. That's it.
Brother look at our church what is happening
1. Why do we use the word OHM while doing Yoga ( If it did not orginate from Hinduism )
2. What I have said in the video is in line with the KCBC doc
3. I dont think you are right about the history of Yoga ( Do you have any backing docs ?)
@@SongonFirecatholicIndia
Pls check www.kcbcsite.com. On the left side of the main page, the entire document on Yoga is right now available in Malayalam only. History of Yoga is written in pages nos. 5-7. Whatever I said is based on this History.

Not worth the risk? Seriously!!! What risk are we talking about here? Heaven! Hell!!! Somewhere in between!!! Just think God would want us to really take care of our bodies in the best possible way. Yoga is not spiritual, just the way you see it actually and frankly no one gives a damn at a class which way you choose to go!!! For example...
1. You don't have to SALUTE THE SUN if you don't want to, I bet you won't be robbed of the benefits if you do the exercise with your back to the burning orb. BETTER STILL you could perform the exercise after dark ;)
2. You can chant "Shalom' instead of 'Om' to make it your own.
There's plenty of loopholes and many ways of getting around if at all those are religious hindrances. BTW why judge an ancient form of exercise, why can't you just take it for what it is an honest way for self improvement!!!
Is Yoga the only way of taking care of your body?
@@SongonFirecatholicIndia Don't you know? It isn't... you don't even make sense. Answer questions don't ask more?
@@duanefonseca7186 So why harp on Yoga as the only one? Why not chose another form of exercise? Just because its a ancient form of exercise it does not mean its a great
@@SongonFirecatholicIndia Who are you to advise bro on what people ought to be doing how they ought to be getting fit. As far as I know there's many priests that also practice yoga and if they do not endorse it they're not against it either. SO that begs the question what's your research based on I bet you haven't been to a Yoga class so you don't really know how the commercial classes that have sprung across the face of the planet operate???
@@SongonFirecatholicIndia BTW there was nothing implied about ancient being great. So you're not really getting the argument
Who told Christian s are not practicing yoga? There are 4 types of yoga 1 Karma yoga 2 bhakti yoga 3 kriya yoga 4 gnaana yoga..now these four are 4 different paths to one destination...now what Christianity is doing is rejecting 3 other yogas and following only bhakti yoga
