    In this video I go step by step in Mach3 showing you How a setup my steps per inch and check the Backlash . I like to get in the ballpark then fine tune from there.
    I have tried to be as detailed as possible to the point of being informative but not boring. I will try to keep the videos around the 15 minute mark. Please comment and let me know if the content is spot on or you would like more information and details. I will do a complete overview video to conclude the wiring in which I will go thru how the system operates. Thanks for watching , please subscribe, thumbs up if you like the video, and most importantly , Be Safe!

    Sam, I would suggest doing your steps per using a level type .0005" I dictator and a 6" ground plate such as 2-4-6 block so that you have less error and remove the possibility of the indicator you are using not being perfectly parallel which would give a false distance reading.

      Yeah I think it's pretty close I'm still fiddling with it I haven't really got it dialed in I'll try a couple 123 blocks back to back.

    Looks good Sam. I don't like the hesitation much, but it might be related to the speed and acceleration settings. You might be able to fine tune that out in time with different settings. I think there might be one on how quickly you want the backlash comp applied (or something like that), I'll see if I can find it again.

    I got my steppers and ball screws installed, progress! Waiting on power supplies to finish control box!! It seems to me that my mill and your mill has about .040" difference in hole locations and some small casting differences. Not too bad for mass produced small milling machine I guess. shims will take care of differences, for now.

    Cordial greeting.
    Masterful explanation !!
    A concern:
    When you open Mach3 and place the units in millimeters (mm), the configuration you have described is eliminated, it remains only for inches (in) or Mach3 makes the appropriate adjustments to be able to work in millimeters.
    Thank you for your attention and valuable response.
    Blessings in these difficult times.

  • @Ale_Lab

    Hi Sam. Great info as usual. I have a bf20l converted to CNC with ball screws ecc... I have adjust the steps as you recommended and backlash. All is good but on the Z the backlash is big like 0.155mm (like 0.006"). I see you also have quite significant backlash there. What did you do at the end? Becasue the weight of the Z should remove backlash when you go down anyway. I have a air strut at the back to remove a big of tension from the ball screw but the weight of the head is still a bit negative so it apply a downward force to ensure the pressure.
    I have run some tests and indeed, without backlash compensation on the Z, going towards the table after have lifted the head several time brings back to 0.
    Of I activate the backlash compensation for 0.006" it can reach a value close to 0 also going upwards (positive).
    I can not think where it can be important but I was wondering what did you ended up doing for the Z, if remove backlash comp for it or kept it.
    Thanks a lot!
    Ale

    • @CNC4XR7
      @CNC4XR7  3 роки тому

      for the z it has not been much of a issue. as there is always weight applied.

    • @Ale_Lab
      @Ale_Lab 3 роки тому

      @@CNC4XR7 Do you mena that you set the backlash compensation to 0 for Z? Because I am wondering in case you run a 4th axis toolpath or 3D one. Then you cut also going upwards. Then the backlash will play a role in that case.

    • @CNC4XR7
      @CNC4XR7  3 роки тому

      @@Ale_Lab I went to double check as I have went trough the machine a couple times since this video aired.the last time when I installed the ClearPath servos. I currently have it set to 0.0015 and I do not yet do any exotic cutting with a 4th axis it is enabled. You did not mention the type bearings your using ? AC or TR however you can try to increase the preload to tighten it up a bit. also dbl check other mechanical connections that be potential causes of backlash.

    • @Ale_Lab
      @Ale_Lab 3 роки тому

      @@CNC4XR7 thanks a lot Sam. I use AC bearings on the axis. On X and Y I have 0.029mm (0.0011") backlash. I am pretty sure it's all tight already. To me must be the ball bearing coupler that might have a bit of slope in the design). Good that you got it down to 0.0015". Just finished to relog all the 28 tools. For the moment with backlash compensation seems to run pretty well. I will make a part and check.

  • @SmallShopConcepts
    @SmallShopConcepts 8 років тому

    also, I noticed you had backlash comp on the z axis,be careful with that, if your head floats it will automatically settle and the backlash will become an error.

    • @CNC4XR7
      @CNC4XR7  8 років тому

      Yeah the z seems to be the worst one the weight is the side I think. Also it may be the plum couplings I'm using. More testing is needed.

    good video.. but for a mill or lathe you need to use a 10s indicator , just so you can set it for the 10 lines between the thousands marks. to a good machinist 0.0005 is close . lol..
