You might also be interested, that Eivor is also a trained opera singer. Eivor is on of the world great female vocalists, and massively underappreciated. She is a rounded musicians and song-writer, and Tròdlabùndin is her own composition. I means spellbound. Her type of percussive vocalization, is entirely her own, and not entirely derived from any specific tradition. She did take lessons from 2 throat-singers, but she is not copying them, or any established throat singing tradition. She used it to develop the sound, she wanted. After the composer, John Lunn saw this, he contacted to help him with the score for the TV series The Last Kingdom. At their first session, Eivor improvised, and they laid down the theme tune. It is difficult to know where to start with recommendations. Falling Free, live at the Old Theatre, Torshavn "the capital of the Faroe Islands), True Love, Sofar, Los Angeles, any of the Last Kingdom performances, are good starting points, but she is very eclectic, so you won't get her style, from any one performance.
This is Eivor, discussing how she developed this singing style, derived from throat singing, and how she developed this style herself. ua-cam.com/video/Mua716deLj4/v-deo.html
Thank you Aaliyah! The performer, the performance and the reaction were all on point and enjoyable!! Well done!
The concert was at Stigen farm in Aurland, Norway. The water you see is the ocean and a sidearm of Sognefjord.
Thanks ! .. its not a folksong, but writen by Eivor and she is from a Island in the middle of the North Atlantic north of Scotland and west from Norway.. Færøyene. This scenery is from Sogn ( chek Sognefjorden - the longest fjord in Norway). Best from Bergen, Norway ( its from a consert with Vamp..)
The scenery is beautiful but, it's not a lake. It's a fjord in Norway. She sings in other languages too. The voice she uses here incorporates singing on inhaling as well as exhaling. Also, other genres. I love your reactions.
I know Eivor just opened your world a whole bit! ❤ I love her too.
What strikes me is how similar it is to Native American music, both the singing style and the drumming. I imagine when we were all hunter-gather tribes, this style would have been common, with variations heard all over the world. I wonder how old the roots are of the song she's singing.
The instrument she is playing is very like an Irish Bodhrán too.
I think the drum she plays in this is a Sámi drum. This was also my introduction to Eivor, her voice is so powerful, she sings in multiple languages too.
Yes, the Sami would have used those drums, but they were widely used across the whole of Eurasia, and are usually referred to as Shamanic drums, as they tended to be used by shamans. Of course, the Sami had their own Shamanic Tradition.
@@stephenbarlow2493 Shamanic is a more general category, Sámi is more specific. It's more likely to be a Sámi drum because of the geography (the Faroes are at the edge of the Sámi range), and the obvious cultural influence that would have...
The Sami Shamans were called Noaide😊@@stephenbarlow2493
@@mspicer3262 You still can't call the that saami drum as pretty much every tribe in northern eurasia used one or other version of similar thing. You'd have to figure out the differences if there are any to be that specific.
@@kookoo9235 You CAN call it a Sami drum, since it's almost certainly what it is. The Faroes are right on the Sami's traditional border. Every other tribe in Northern Eurasia **can't** make the same claim. Geographic association is important here.
Now, if Eivor was Mongolian, or African, or Persian, I wouldn't refer to it as a Sami drum, then it would be referred to as the more general "shamanic drum".
She is an amazing performer. I saw her live last year and it was amazing. Her latest album, End, all sung in Faroese is brilliant. The drum is reminiscent of an Irish Bodhrán, which it may be, if not some Nordic variant of the Bodhrán.
Eivør is a force of nature:)
Amazing to see you again, Aaliyah. You are a GREAT reactor IMO👍 And thanks a lot for reacting to Eivør. She is an absolutely incredible singer, as you pointed out in your reaction. My 3 favorite female singers on this planet are Angelina Jordan, Aurora and Eivør. I would love for you to hear and hopefully react to THE performance that got me personally hooked on her. It's quite different from this, but make no mistake about it, her vocals are on FULL display++ It's a performance of her song called "Falling Free", which took place on a small, intimate stage at The Old Theater in Tòrshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. I am very sure that you will absolutely love it! As I'm not sure if links(and the comment together with it) will be removed, I'll add the link in a separate comment 🙂 I really hope your career is where you want it to be at this point. I have listened to you before and I think you're amazingly gifted. And with your looks as well, you should be more than fine😊 I'm also glad that you enjoyed the scenery from my country so much. It is recorded somewhere called Steigen, and the water you see is one of Norway's many, many fjords.
Until next time, take care and stay safe. Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥
Found her about 6 years ago through this song. She's actually touring Canada and the north of the US. You can pronounce her last name at the end as "daughter". 'Cause that's what it means:
"the daughter of Pal". Like nordic names are often like Svensson: "the son of Sven". I'd like to introduce you 2 more songs from her: Falling Free (Live at the old theatre in Torshavn) and from her latest album ENN (=silence) the song Hugsi bert um teg. (A nice test for the low frequency range of your loudspeakers.) Since 2020? she is also "Knight of the danish empire". So, that makes her "Dame Eivor". That is the "Sir", when given to a male person.
She is also the voice in the music to the BBC Viking-Saga The last kingdom.
Finding her is quite a rabbit hole. There is also videos of her playing for a few people at her mom's house or from her living room in Kobenhavn during the pandemic.
Greetings from the far north of Germany!
Great reaction to this unusual song by the wonderful Eivør. How about something more conventional with the rest of her band?
Eivør - Falling Free (Live at the Old Theater in Torshavn) : ua-cam.com/video/KNPIdGBn7M4/v-deo.html
Eivor is incredible. Managed to see her twice last year opening for Heilung (now that's a concert). Falling free is a brilliant recommendation. Absolutely transcendent.
Absolutely Heavenly! Thank you! 🎉
Awesome 😊
I first heard this many years ago when she played in Scotland during the Celtic Connections festival.
As noted, Trollabundin = spellbound, a song of being under a spell, sung in her native Faroese....she has a five ( I think ) octave range
Pretty sure the "waters" in this video is not a lake. I believe it is indeed the Atlantic Ocean!?
edit; even though it seems to be recorded in Norway(?). By NRK, the Norwegian public TV ?.
Wonderful reaction. The best performance for me is Falling Free Live. I am sure, you love it...
If you're impressed by that, listen to Falling Free (live in the Old Theater in Torshavn). Another level.
divine
Aliyah, unrelated to this reaction, I think you need to react to the great Thom Yorke. Here's 3 Radiohead tracks: Nude, Reckoned, Pyramid Song. Also, the track Suspirium from his soundtrack for the movie Suspiria. He also performs solo with many more incredible tracks as well as singing in his new band The Smile. His voice is a true instrument and there are too many more mind blowing songs of his to list here. Enjoy dear!
Reminds me of Heilung
She has toured and performed with Heilung.
This is such a cool video - glad to see you checking it out! Eivor has evidently studied various kinds of singing extensively. Different, but have you listened to Aurora? Ah - I see you have...
😎💥
I think you have to meet a dragon, or a werewolf or a balrog in order to sing like Eivor. But you do you, Aaliyah. You are amazing being yourself. Your voice is beautiful. Thanks for the video!
I wrote to you earlier that I recommend Eivor... She is a great vocalist, both in terms of singing and in terms of promoting the culture of her own lands and traditions..
I am not sure if it is you, my dear, that I am asking, but maybe it is from you that I will hear the answer:
- do you, (as an extra-European) hear the similarity of Eivor-folk music to the music of the indigenous Indians from °North.A???
Bacio!!!
It sounds alot like native American songs.
I was pretty sure you'd like this one, Aaliyah. This is the music of my peeps (my ancestors were northern European/Scandinavian), and I like it way better than the food. LOL. I get a real Viking feel; how about you?
I hear some Irish folk and a strong connection to the american indian nations…stunning!
Level 42 - Lessons in Love (Please)
Ha, Ha!❤😂🎉

Reaction suggestion: Turn the Lights Back On, Billy Joel.

There are vocal techniques important to learn for maximum expression and mininum harm to the chords! Explore and practice! I can't teach you right now, I just got rolled over by a fourty ton truck! It'll take month before I have breath control again!
