Oh, my gosh, what an amazing session! I had no idea that Billy is 79 years old, that just blows me away. Andrew, you cited the double kick with those beautiful TAMA drums that Billy was using. I'm not qualified to comment on that aside from my feeling that if you have two bass pedals you should have two bass drums. I hardly even noticed he was using them 'cause he used them so seamlessly in context with the super complex arrangement. Genius is the only word that comes to mind. 😮
Billy Cobham , haven’t thort about him for a long time , talk about fluid drumming . I think he’s floating down the river in his mind While letting the drumming happen, amazing
I have seen Billy the Great with Mahavishnu Orchestra in the 70's And his solo works. The first drummer who totally blew me away. He has it all. Terry Bozzios biggest influence on his craft. A true legend Have a great day my friend.
I just did a bit of research. Louie was a tap dancer which got him interested in playing double bass drums at age fifteen. That would have been around 1939. I'm not sure when he started using two kicks with Jazz bands. Apparently it was years before he could get a drum company to build him a double bass set. But I do believe he was playing with double kicks when he played in Duke Ellington's band during the swing era.
Billy Cobham is a true legend, still going strong and enjoying playing with a smile in his face. Andrew if I may suggest another drummer that is 79 and still playing that is the drummer of Pink Floyd, Nick Mason, very tasteful and with great feel, you should look at his drumming in live at pompeii in early 70:s that was when Nick and the whole band were top of their game. There are some videos in youtube, especially the echoes is beautiful, one of their best songs.
Well Tony Williams did go in a more rock style with Emergency in 1969 which has John McLaughlin on guitar before he formed the Mahavishnu Orchestra. But Believe It is an S tier album featuring probably the only person who can give McLaughlin a run for his money, Allan Holdsworth.
Love these videos. Keep up the goodness. I want to request the new Jay Postones (TesseracT) “Sacrifice” playthrough. I’ll get over to Patreon sometime soon. Postpones has some stuff I love so much. So dang sweet. Anyway, have a good day.
To me, although he's totally an ambidextrous type player, his kit is pretty much set up as a left handed player's would be. Am I wrong? I'm lefty but I played with a right hand set-up and learned that way initially as well 💙🥁
Jeezus! This man is 79 and playing like this?? My mind is officially blown.
To me, Billy & Simon Philips are the two 'classic' ambidextrous drummers. Fully acknowledging that lots of guys since have taken it to a new level.
And even Simon learned it from watching Billy!
Alex Van Halen got his double bass shuffle from Cobham.
I saw him with Stanley Clarke and Friends at The Cater Barron Ampitheater. Amazing show and so glad I was able to see him live.
My God the timing on this complex stuff is simply amazing. This is high level musicianship across the board, remarkable. He's really 79?

Amazing chops for a drummer of any age!
YUP
I've seen Billy quite a few times. Power + groove + feel and a signature voice. What an amazing player! Thanks for the vid!
Everything Dream theater wishes they could be - wow!
Billy the GOAT
Absolute legend
Louie Bellson started using double bass drums way back, long before Fusion.
Thanks! As an amateur drummer I appreciate your channel! Please react to one of my favorites, ZZ TOP La Grange. Much love from Las Vegas.
Thank you! 🤘
THANKS!!!

In Count Basie he was using it too.

Tasty stuff. Double kicks are abstract anti-abstract fushion elements🤷🏽♂️
I really enjoyed these sessions.. Really awesome
Everyone should hear "one word" on Birds of Fire by Mahavishnu Orchestra. 🔥
ooooo that high hat ostinoto 😮🫣😖
don’t forget Aric Improta
"Hey, what is up TubeYou?" XD
Andrew please react to new drum playtrought of Alex Bent's (Trivium) Like a sword over Democles. Another brutal masterpiece.
My 15 year old told me "out of the loop" means old. I told him he must hate money lol
By the way, this is *composer* Billy Cobham, merely playing drums on a tune he wrote.
Yeah. That too.
Those ambidextrous sons of a gun 💪🏻
