That whole scene was so raw and intimate. There were times I honestly felt I shouldn't be seeing this. Every aspect, writing, directing, etc, was spot on. And those two actors... wow. Just wow. They owned that scene.
And then Peter came home and continued his relationship with Arnie and they all lived happily ever after because I'm already fucking crying and if I think anything else happened I'll be curled on the bed for the next 71 hours. Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
Or... Peter came home a living casualty of war and Arnie was never able to connect with him again, and lived with agonizing regret over his self-centered behavior their last time together.
Some first rate acting in this shortie. I was reminded of my WWII era gay friends, who are now long gone. Nobody currently living comes close to their panache.
I'm so glad to read this! All we can do is try to imagine and honor those who came before us... so if we're doing that even just a little, it means we've succeeded!
I'm generally not a fan of gay historical dramas because they're always end in tragedy, but this was extremely well done. The shots were beautiful. And these actors are very clearly well-trained craftsmen.
It saddens me to think of the many relationships that ended this way. Neither seeing the other ever again. Terrible bits of history we never think about. I would love to see part 2 with a happy ending. We all love happy endings.
I know, it's so beautiful what they feel for each other and so sad, because happy endings are so rare 😢😢 but I want to see them come back to each other!!
I am speechless. I don't know what to say as the tears roll down my face. This is just an absolutely phenomenal short. Everything about it is perfect. This short deserves so many awards, not least of all the acting by these two leads. I've never seen them before but I will certainly be keeping my eyes out for their work. What I loved about this is that them being gay was really not the focus of the film although that thread weaves its way through their story. This was every couples pain prior to the husband/boyfriend going off to war. The only thing that was different here to me is that they were both not heading off to war being as they were a male same-sex couple. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this film. Just wonderful.
What a powerfully passionate short film. My heart goes out to so many people who have to hide or deny their love to survive and I'm one of them. To live in constant fear and abandonment, on the outside of society. Yet have so much unconditional love on the inside of their own space, says allot about the world we still live in.
Confined to only one room this should feel more like a scene from a stage play than a movie, but thanks to a variation in camera angles, pan shots, close ups, establishing shots and more it has all been glued so perfectly together by amazingly precise editing, this excellently written, acted, directed, lit, shot and more short looks and feels like a movie as good as any. I think my favorite line was something like: "I don`t tend to keep what I can not hold onto." That was the full movie in a nutshell, wasn`t it? I know it is early January still, but this is the best short movie I have seen this year - and definitely high up on the list of the one`s I have watched previous years too.
Glad you enjoyed it! Credit to co-director and editor and all around amazing artist Katie Ennis who had the vision and the execution to make one single room come vividly alive for the whole film!
@@garyjaffe She is certainly brilliantly good, cause despite swapping from frame to frame, everything from the monologue, dialogues and the shifts were as smooth and precise as if it all should have been one single scene and take, just shot from different cameras and angles at the same time. This entire movie was quality through and through from script to editing, via acting, set decor, costumes, lighting, sound, cinematography and more. So consequently both the directing and the producing had to be top notch too, a chain only being as strong as it`s weakest link, and all that. This chain was solid in every individual link. I am truly pleased I was recommended this little short, following another one recommended to me while searching for crime mysteries, which also ended up being a gay themed movie (which probably is why I was recommended this one in the top corner), but which despite also being very solid overall. Well not quite as well acted as this one, but the leads suddenly knew what they were doing, and both costumes and set decor/locations were very convincing too. The problem with it though, was that where this felt as real as if these two guys could have lived and felt, and been forced to act and behave, as we saw in the film, the characters in the other movie behaved irrationally to how I find it credible people in their position in that particular time periode would have been motivated to act and behave. Particularly the ending ripped the whole piece apart, more than it tied up loose ends, since the background for it was forced writing - and the writer forced the behavior and story in a direction I felt it unlikely to have taken, had this been real characters from that time periode in those situations. The little short was called Staccato, and uploaded by it`s director and writer Eoghan McQuinn. But despite being fairly well made as far as acting, location, editing, musical score, and I would have included script, had it not been for the elephant in the room; I felt the story lacked credibility because of what I addressed earlier. So more than being a good story that either taught and informed as about people at that periode in time, or through the characters revealed something about the human nature, and different types of people and personalities, it felt like the writer had created his own little world, not at all related to the time periode he had set his movie in, and as a consequence both the story and the characters were fake and without relevance to the message he attempted to convey. Why am I mentioning this? I just wanted to illustrate it is rare I am so extremely positive about a movie/short, as I was about Sunset. You and your team and cast managed to impress me - not many do.
Beautifully done from beginning to end. Breathtaking. This is exactly what a short film should be. There’s a definite storyline with a beginning and end, powerful, nuanced acting, and strong production values from the first frame to the last. That smile at the window was the perfect exclamation point.
I can't imagine what it would have been like for any couple during that time. But it must have been very difficult for gay couples when one partner or both went to war not knowing what could happen to them as gay men let alone soldiers! This short said a lot in so little time. Thanks
I could do a review that was longer than the film, talking about the direction and writing and set design and so much more... but I'll be brief: the acting is EXQUISITE. These two gentlemen need to be seen. I sincerely hope this launches two long and happy careers. Beautifully done all around. Congrats. ☺
Watching this movie it makes me think and remember my oldest uncle that was gay in those years. I found out later in life he had a married man as his lover for the longest. I can’t imagine those decades they were imprisoned here in the US.
That was absolutely amazing. Beautifully shot, gorgeous backdrop and the actors, oh gosh I could go on about them for hours. The performance was utterly breathtaking and passionate.

Well done! This period piece has me thinking what a story might be between a Japanese American man and his non-Japanese lover on the evening before the former must report for internment.

I make it a point to watch all of these shorts. This one is superb, with its attention to detail in the room, to its character, development, to the writing, direction and yes the acting. This is a very nuanced and uncertain 15 minutes in these two lives. We do forget that every complicated and discordant emotion, and torn sense of loyalties and honor that straight men and women have felt in time of war, is shared by gay and lesbian men and women in time of war except that it is all the more poignant when abstract loyalties to faith, and to country, are not reciprocated by the faith, and the country. Fact is that very few people have ever gone to battle with a sure and absolute sense of what right and wrong are, and when gays see much of their past entwined in institutional discrimination and marginalization, the whole concepts of right and wrong are turned topsy turvy. Bravo to the writers, directors and actors.
That was very well said- thank you. I think it's disgraceful that this part of our past was and has continued to be denied. Erased from history. But I realised that a secret is maintained b by all who comply. I lived a version of this at the turn of the century. Enough time has passed. Let's blow the fucking roof off.
I just discovered this. And what a treat. It is so well done. It was almost like watching a stage play; it had that kind of intimacy. I hope you do more. Thanks so much!
Wow, this was beautiful. And to think of all the people who never saw their loved ones again, who died for a country that doesn’t even recognize their rights.
This one of the most beautiful stories I have seen. Bravo to these 2 actors and to Garry Jaffe. You are to be commended for your work. I was so good that I can’t decide if I want it to stay with this ending or have them reunite. Thank you again for a great short film 🌹
We've got one! It begins in September 1941 and we see how Arnie and Peter meet and fall for each other -- but then of course the other shoe drops with Pearl Harbor. Then we finish with something a bit close to what you see here, with some twists! But it's all a bit too expensive to make right now -- hopefully in the future!
Beautiful. Sometimes when two directors are involved, one can tell. This is beautiful, seamless, and incredibly compelling. I'm from the generation immediately following and grew up knowing a gay WWII vet. He's was my father's best friend, but I doubt if he and my father ever hooked. He and I did, however, and I was never quite sure if he was fucking me or my father. The '60s...gotta love 'em. Someone commented there should be a Part 2. No, but if there were, Peter could well return injured...physically, mentally, or both. It is also quite possible that just before his scheduled release from the Army, he would be court martialed and receive a dishonorable discharge which would conveniently deny him of any vet benefits, then and in the future. It happened.
It certainly is relevant! I'd like to think that, if Peter and Arnie were called to service today to go fight a stupid war in Iran, Arnie would be like "Canada?" and Peter would be like "Ten steps ahead of you, babe."

Also if I may ask, what inspired you? This had shades of Maurice in it, no? I love period drama combined with gay themes, if you recommend anything, I will gladly watch (and look forward to a full length film from you!)
Thank you, Heather! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. MAURICE was absolutely a visual reference -- the actual inspiration was a long goodbye in the parking lot of a pizza joint in Austin TX in 2010 (lol) multiplied by Alan Bérubé's COMING OUT UNDER FIRE and George Chauncey's GAY NEW YORK. Terrific, inspiring books!
This is an incredible film. I watch my share of gay shorts on UA-cam, and it’s rare to find one as well acted and directed as this. The theater-style isn’t done much these days. That it’s not one of the stock coming-out or love triangle stories is just the start of what distinguishes this. But it goes beyond, by dipping into history, setting mood with music and lighting, and getting into the mixed emotions.
Well acted and believable to watch......Have been researching my family tree and one young male relative was a soldier in WW1 age 18 with a male friend/companion 12 years his senior....unfortunately the 18 yr old committed suicide and his friend died 5 years later due to stress/broken heart......very sad.
very much so....and he was an only son so his parents would have been devastated too as well as his lover....the 18 yr old was a nephew of my gt grandmother...im trying to find pics of him through war records but nothing so far....i am gay too so it been a bit tough discovering circumstances surrounding his death as its not something that was discussed going back 40/50 years as i was growing up.....i have placed fresh flowers on his grave a couple of times so he is not forgotten.
Pity this isn’t a feature-length film. I’d love to know more about their backstories and of course how it eventually ends (I hope happily even though it uses WWII as a backdrop)😭
Very moving, pulled me in right away, I felt the emotions. I agree that this should be a full length feature. I was just getting interested! Darn you short film makers!
That was beautifully done, a well written script that was a rollercoaster of emotion, the actors blended well together and the scenes were so tastefully done. Sad that this story was the story of many soldiers that had to go to war and leave their secrets locked up in a upper flat in the city.
One of the very best short films I have ever seen; and, I have watched (probably) a couple thousand. Thank You to each and every single person involved with this project.
This brought me to tears. :'( I knew this was going to be sad, but I decided to watch it anyways. I can't imagine how many couples have gone through this during that time. It breaks my heart. It's hard for me to be away from my significant other (I know WWII is on a whole crazy ass level), but I haven't been able to see him lately due to him getting covid and his family getting it as well. I know there's couples, families, and just other people in general who have been hit harder during 2020. I know him and his family will get better and I feel internally grateful that none of them have it at an extreme level. But I still can't help feeling sad and missing him. I'm still going through my days, but I feel bad for feeling sad. Anyways, I am positive that I'll see him at some point, and I just wanted to scream at that guy to stay with his boyfriend ya know. :( Overall, loved this video and I hope you all stay safe out there! I hope that 2021 will bring better opportunities and strength to everyone who's been affected by Covid or any other bs during 2020.
It was the first one that I saw with a Historical American Vibe. I saw Man In An Orange Shirt and I loved it. Also they mention Central Park and it was synonymous with Gay Culture. It was Central Park where Sal Romano talked to his Wife Kitty after he got Fired and a Young Man cruised an Older Man. Then going for Therapy was something that The Late Chester Weinberg did for several years and stopped. He would later be the Mentor of Calvin Klein and a Teacher At Parsons School Of Design and sadly enough he would die of AIDS related illness the same way Halston who heavily influenced Calvin Klein.
There is "magic" in this. Truly. I do hope that sometime into the future this can be made into a movie. It resonates with me on some.... Emotional, psychological, primal level.
That whole scene was so raw and intimate. There were times I honestly felt I shouldn't be seeing this. Every aspect, writing, directing, etc, was spot on. And those two actors... wow. Just wow. They owned that scene.

So glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!!!
Amazing short movie ….. so passionate…. Very sad for everyone at the time that had to war ….. 😢 ……
I will keep on watching until i cry no more, this is unbelievably beautiful.
This short movie was unbelievably Beautiful,Thank You
Wow what a beautiful film! The acting, writing and direction were incredible.
I would watch this as a feature length film. Marvellous storytelling!
Made me cry literally .... can;t wait for the next part
Thank you! I'll try to get it made ASAP for you!
Thank you! And yes, if there are future stories to tell with these characters, we definitely have dishonorable discharges in the mix...
Wow, just beautiful!
Utterly compelling, poignant, beautiful & sadly still totally relevant💥👊❤💯Kudos to yourself & EVERYONE involved👏👏👏👌🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍👋✌Love is Love💙💙
It certainly is relevant! I'd like to think that, if Peter and Arnie were called to service today to go fight a stupid war in Iran, Arnie would be like "Canada?" and Peter would be like "Ten steps ahead of you, babe."
And thank you for the very kind words!
@@garyjaffe Thank you for replying & as a man in my 50s who thought that by now we might have managed to get rid of bigots, bulling and LGBTetcphobia in the WHOLE world - certainly UK,USA&what we refer to laughingly as civilised countries - to see figures for hate crimes increase & certain government policies overturned or diminished, by vile rich hypocritical hetro-"normals" - friends of Epstein - types, with more skeletons in their closets than any average Gay(or other) person !!!! I could not agree with you MORE ; if anything it makes it more important that this wonderful work of art - philosophy - is disseminated far wider, than it is a present,to help the younger generation ask the very same questions and hopefully come to the resolution, you suggest. Think about breaking it down into a microedited miniseries for TikTok, strangely I found it as part of a multiple compilation video! Slightly belated Happy New Year & very best wishes to you&yours, again kudos👏👏👏👊👋✌
@@TheWhore2culture So much yes to all of this! Thank you again and Happy New Year to you!!
Was not at all prepared for the range of emotions this perfect film ilicits. I am a wreck.
Thank you for saying -- so glad we could take you for a roller coaster!
This was top tier, nothing short of spectacular.
Excellent original ideas. Very well done. The actors carried this beautifully
Gary Jaffe, this is brilliant, I hope to see more from you! Wonderfully written and acted as well
Also if I may ask, what inspired you?
Very good. Ain’t love grand. No matter how long it lasts or hurts.
Such a beautiful depiction of emotions between two men!
Why on earth I found dis today, wish to know dis long ago,but love ittt❤
Wow,everything was amazing, just wow
Well acted and believable to watch......Have been researching my family tree and one young male relative was a soldier in WW1 age 18 with a male friend/companion 12 years his senior....unfortunately the 18 yr old committed suicide and his friend died 5 years later due to stress/broken heart......very sad.
That is heartbreaking!
very much so....and he was an only son so his parents would have been devastated too as well as his lover....the 18 yr old was a nephew of my gt grandmother...im trying to find pics of him through war records but nothing so far....i am gay too so it been a bit tough discovering circumstances surrounding his death as its not something that was discussed going back 40/50 years as i was growing up.....i have placed fresh flowers on his grave a couple of times so he is not forgotten.
@@geoffdundee thank you for sharing and for stewarding his memory and his legacy!
Tender and yet unfulfilled. Beautifully done but, I want to know how they or if they come back together.
OMG. THIS. IS. AMAZING. The vibe is like off the charts my dude and the drama is just mmm 😔👌
Thank you! What can I say, we love drama over here... 💖
the best film I’ve seen in years. Amazing on every point. Simply outstanding.
Wow! Thank you, Tim!
Pity this isn’t a feature-length film. I’d love to know more about their backstories and of course how it eventually ends (I hope happily even though it uses WWII as a backdrop)😭
OH such a moving, well done scene.......Thank You......🤩
Very moving, pulled me in right away, I felt the emotions. I agree that this should be a full length feature. I was just getting interested! Darn you short film makers!
A well done and very enjoyable short film. Thank you!
the way his emotions changed to quickly at 11:59, from sad, happy, to angry. real talent!!
Really enjoyed this. Thank you all involved. You shared a true piece of art.
When do we get to s.ee more of these actors?! I hope their careers thrive
Oh -- sorry -- kudos to the writers and directors, etc., too !!!
This is an brillant piece of gay film.So powerful. I would love this to be made into a feature film. Please make it have a happy ending though.
That was beautiful. Everything about this was wonderful.
That was beautifully done, a well written script that was a rollercoaster of emotion, the actors blended well together and the scenes were so tastefully done. Sad that this story was the story of many soldiers that had to go to war and leave their secrets locked up in a upper flat in the city.
Truly an exquisite short film. Two fine actors, and all other aspects of the film are spot-on.
Simply beautiful. ❤️
This was the best thing I've literally seen ever in my life.
Wow! What a compliment! Thank you, Alex! ☺
Stunning, Touched my heart. Thank You. Peace.
One of the very best short films I have ever seen; and, I have watched (probably) a couple thousand. Thank You to each and every single person involved with this project.
So kind of you to say! Thank you!
Wow, the first time UA-cam has recommended a great video for me to watch.
Unbelievably beautiful in all its fullness......I enjoyed this short film very much.
Was hoping to see more like him coming back from war and them meeting again
If Peter survives, he may come home a changed man... I know what happens next, just haven't made the movies yet!

Can't wait itttttt
Omg I'm so glad this came up in my feed. So beautiful I had tears in my eyes at the end. It rly does need to be made in to a film. 💐
i keep rewatching this. it’s very good🤗
Exceptionally well done! Bravo cast and crew!
What a Mind-blowing story.. the acting was top notch ❤️👍
He would later be the Mentor of Calvin Klein and a Teacher At Parsons School Of Design and sadly enough he would die of AIDS related illness the same way Halston who heavily influenced Calvin Klein.
in my mind he comes back and they have a very very happy ending. this was just brilliant.
WHAT........TTTT 😭
NEED MORE FROM BOTH OF THEM
There is "magic" in this. Truly. I do hope that sometime into the future this can be made into a movie.
It resonates with me on some.... Emotional, psychological, primal level.
Great writing ✍️
This was so powerful and beautiful. Loved every minute!
Thank you SO much.
Beautifully done film. And I'm in tears.
