It might be like James E Pepper in Lexington Kentucky. Their first sourced bourbon was rated low by most, but their first decanter bottle distilled at Lexington is rated high by most. Green River started with their own bourbon in Owensboro Kentucky and most rate it high- it likely helped a lot that they are owned by the Bardstown Bourbon Company. The lowest proof I buy is 90, and only 1 more for the summer. The Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey.
I picked up a couole of the old bottle style Clyde Mays Alabama style at 110 proof and they were great. Nothing on the bottle said anything about apple or finishing but I got an apple not for sure. Hopefully you can find one of those bottle cuz they were fantastic
Definitely it is not called bourbon or even "straight whiskey" because of the apple. I don't think their website has detailed explanation on it but from a number of sources, it's said it's plain apple juice that is added. It's not from the barreling but from the proofing down, and it's plain unfermented or distilled juice. But it would be bourbon if they did not add anything.
My only Clyde Mays experience was a store pick that was very underwhelming, so I have a tendency to avoid this brand. After watching this, nothing has changed.
I like Clyde Mays. The special Reserve Red label is one of my favorites

Only Clyde Mays I have is a Red Label 6 Year Special Reserve that was okay, but have not gone back to it in quite a while. 🥃

I've only seen the Bourbon at 110 proof. I've had a single barrel from them that was a higher proof, and it was really good!

Ah man, nothing with which to blend it. 😞 Never seen that expression of Clyde Mays, though I'm not generally a fan Clyde Mays stuff.
