This was an excellent video! At one point " the instructor" apologizes for repeating himself and I have to say there is no need to apologize at all. Our new videos are due out by the end of the month so please stop by and watch them. The new compression guideline calls for "at least two inches, but not more than 2.4 inches". Touch one right? However, what they're saying is that too deep of a compression can be harmful also. Not giving you very much room for error but as long as you have a guide, we now understand that your compressions for adults have an upper limit this was added in the new recommendations. The courses and videos are being updated now.
Hi Andrew, Yes, AHA made mention of a prone position back in 2010 but didn't mention it again since then. Here's what they released: "When the patient cannot be placed in the supine position, it may be reasonable for rescuers to provide CPR with the patient in the prone position, particularly in hospitalized patients with an advanced airway in place." To my knowledge, that's the only statement that they made regarding a prone position but I'll do some research and mention it on our website. We're due for the new videos next week and an update in the course material of the minor modifications of the guidelines and we plan on answering questions that we get asked from time to time. Some of them are whether to use an AED on a pregnant woman, a person with a pacemaker, etc. We'll also address CPR from the prone position and even add a video. Thank you for your input! Jasons, hands-only CPR has been proven as effective as CPR with rescue breaths in case you get yourself in a situation where you are unable, or unwilling, to perform rescue breaths.

when calling for help by yourself...why not put the phone on speaker while you start CPR if you know what you are doing...especially when calling on a cell it takes an excessive time to get routed to the right dispatcher....even on the landline....there is a delay while it gets routed to EMS dispatch..

It's a tough call Meredith but if a person is not breathing, a cracked rib or damage to the sternum is going to be the lesser of two evils. In many cases, there is damage to the sternum because "at least two inches" is a very deep compression but as I said, it's the lesser of two evils.

Hi Christina! For an infant, you perform 5 cycles of CPR before calling 911. Studies have shown that if an infant is unconscious, it's more likely a respiratory problem, rather than a heart problem so if the infant is not breathing, CPR before calling. Yes, if possible, place the infant on the floor or hard surface. Make sure the chest rises and falls so you know the baby is getting air and if not, back blows and abdominal thrusts if necessary. With two people performing CPR, it's 15 compressions to 2 rescue breaths. That process will be in our new videos, scheduled for the end of the month.

Anyway, I gave one of my friends a whiplash, in the neck, by shaking him too hard, but indeed you should start with the pushing. It happened to be way faster most of the time. CPR is rather easy, none of us had to be taken to the hospital to get defibrillated or anything.

You check to see if a person is breathing "at the same time" as you check for responsiveness. Shake the person and check for breathing simultaneously. The key here is you shouldn't spend two much time checking for breathing and delay the start of CPR if that person is unconscious and not breathing.

If you want to make your own video then go ahead. between the nipples is just a general idea. And this guy made an excellent video with simply the basics of CPR. People still need to take classes to actually get certified. If you think you can do a better job then you make your own video.
While you're correct Jojan, to make the guidelines uniform, "between the nipples" is how it's written. You can use the center of the breasts if that makes it easier. It's a judgement call as many things are when a person becomes unconscious. Thank you!
It can't hurt to learn CPR but keep in mind, The Good Samaritan Laws will protect you ONLY to the extent of your training. In other words, if you're trained in CPR, you can't do surgery on a person because that wasn't included in your training. If you're never had proper CPR training, the Good Samaritan Laws might not protect you.
If there is something in his mouth and you wont do the rescue breaths because of that, ask someone to clear it, try to clean it with maybe a (wet) t shirt while youre doing the compressions and after its cleaned, do the rescue breaths? I mean personally Id rather do that than let someone die just because Im disgusted...

+DanOn2Wheels no you risk exposure. Remember if it's warm and wet it will transmit. Compressions are what they really need.
