I show up on your channel every week because the content is good. It's that simple.

There is so much else that accounts for the success of your channel. Here's a list of things I appreciate about this channel and wish other UA-camrs also practiced:
    - Your videos are carefully planned. You get straight to the topic, the introduction moves fast, and you are always on point; you never ramble nor do you ever seem at a loss about what to say any any given moment or how to transition to the next topic, from beginning to end. This kind of planning communicates respect for the viewer's time.
    - You never talk down to your audience. The explanations you offer are always clear and easy to follow, but they never compromise on technical accuracy or conceptual depth. Whenever I watch your videos I feel that I'm being treated as an intelligent person by another intelligent person who happens to know more than I do; I never feel underestimated. Too many travel channels make this mistake: they offer shallow descriptions of places and cultures, betraying the assumption that viewers cannot digest anything better.
    - Your videos have an implicit ethic that I admire. Your discussion of photography as a human activity and of the nonhuman environments we photograph always comes from a place of open-mindedness and regard for values that I, at least, share. You manage to talk about photography as a highly demanding hobby that can nonetheless be noncompetitive, and where effort to excel must be limited by boundaries such as our respect for birds and our enjoyment of the activity itself.
    - Finally, the good humor and modesty!

I was going to write something like this. But the best I can do is "what he said".
This, in a large nutshell, is why I subscribed. I'm a beginner with an old D3300 and a couple of lenses and mostly take the "out of every 100 photos I might get a good one" approach. Simon's getting me down to 1 in maybe 75! :D

One of the best takeaways from every video you have posted is your outro of “I know you can do it”. Making any sort of content takes a lot of work and can be very disheartening when no one sees it. All of your amazing teaching really adds to that cherry on top. Love your work and channel!

To me, the most important thing above all is to JUST BE YOU! Countless people fail on UA-cam because they feel they need to become a "character." Not only do people often pick up on that very quickly, but you can only be "someone else" for so long before it takes a very negative emotional toll on you.

Great advice, and I am happy to see you are satisfied. Being a UA-camr is very similar to running your own business. You should upload things people want to see, just like businessman should offer product/service that people need. And when the growth becomes real, you can consider hiring people to help you run your channel more efficiently. The most difficult part is starting and growing of course, but consistency and hard work (with a little bit of help from Fame- ster of course) will always pay off at the end.

Simon: Maybe you could use shorts as visual aids to supplement your other education work? As a viewer - not a content creator, I have my own strategy when it comes to giving thumbs up. After watching a video of my favorite UA-camr ( for example Simon d'Entremont ), I always give a thumbs up to mark which video I have already seen. If I've been busy over the last month and unfortunately haven't been able to watch last few videos, when the day of chill out will comes - one Saturday or Sunday I lay on the couch and watch the last few videos posted. Thanks to the thumbs up, I know which video I saw last ;)

Whenever I see someone posting awesome photos or videos, I don't know whether to be inspired or dejected. This video is easy to decide. He started 2 years ago and is already at this level. I started taking photography seriously about 10 years ago, taking 100,000s of pictures, reading books, and watching tons of videos. But I'm nowhere near this level. I can go out for a day and come home with 1000 shots, but only have about 5 or 6 that I think are worth showing. If I had to depend on this for a living, I'd have starved to death on street by now. And I haven't even gotten started in video yet, which I assume is a whole new skill set altogether. So this video is easily one of the most depressing videos I've seen on the subject.

I totally agree with all your points to have a successful channel. Another point which I understand is not mentioned by youtubers is that you have to be likeable. If your content is exceptionally good you can get away with it but not often. I'm sure if I went hunting I could find hundreds of photographers who are knowledgeable with great content telling me how to be a better photographer but there will only be a few I will follow. If we all made EXACTLY the same video, some people will have more likes and followers than others and that's just how life is.

Simon, I am sure you won't read this. However, I've only recently joined your channel, but you have been a massive part of my journey on photography.
Truth be told, I only bought my Bridge Camera because I broke my phone's camera. I have an extremely old Canon S5 IS. It is extremely limited in terms of capabilities, but it is more than enough for capturing the moments with my newborn daughter and my beautiful wife.
It has been significantly harder to capture every single moment with this camera, and the original photos I took were less than stellar. So I went looking for a concise teacher and stumbled upon you. Whilst I know nature photography is different than the kind of photos I'm taking; you have taught me so many interesting fundamentals. And despite not being able to capture every moment. I think I've come to learn, it isn’t about EVERY moment captured. But about those very special moments that I do catch.
These little pictures, while they don't need to be perfect or exceptionally beautiful, are all the better thanks to you. My daughter can look back at the moments I've saved in time thanks to you. My many thanks, and I'll continue to follow and watch your journey. And maybe one day I can order one of your beautiful landscape shots for a home in my future.

Thanks for this great video. My UA-cam channel has experienced very slow growth over the past 4 years. I work full time, have 2 young kids and am studying part time. Also very slowly growing my photography business as a side hustle. There are some tips in here that I am aware of already but you've summarised in a very relatable way. I teach people how to maintain and repair a specific type of motorcycle and I review motorcycle related gear and gadgets. I'm going back to the drawing board and will put an action plan in place guided by your advice. Thanks for your great videos.

Great video Simon! Amazing who you'll meet going in to the grocery store! Hopefully we'll bump into each other again while out shooting in the area. Keep up the great work and videos! Cheers!

I personally like pov style of channels in photography, so your first videos got my attention and you were new and seen you do some collabs with Gavin when he lived in the same area. I seen the switch from that style to more of a teaching style channel. That was a good move for you as you have a natural teaching style that I think newcomers to photography can understand and when they are having issues you have probably done a video on how to correct them and become better photographers. You are an amazing photographer and I just enjoys watching the content you produce, and you shoot Canon! :-) Congrats on your success and I hope to see you hit 1mil subs here soon, "I know you can do it!".

Your channel is the only bird photography channel (not that there are many) I follow closely. I have learned so much and it's always a pleasurable viewing experience. I hope your UA-cam journey continues to be successful and I am looking forward to learning more!

Congratulations! I have learned so much from you. My photography has improved immensely I learned that the camera body was not near as important as the lens . 😢And I went out and got myself a fantastic lens. It made all the difference in the world. Every time I’m out and about I mention your name to other photographers that I meet you are well known.

As.a photography newbie- your site has been the best because you show us examples of exactly what you mean while you are explaining. you actually get technical and explain just enough of the science that backs up the art. But then you also explain what looks good to the eye. So all of t hose aspects are what I hope you will keep up on your channel!! Thanks Simon!
