My mom found DCI on our local PBS station, as we were already aware of DCI through Drums Along the Rockies, which came through Denver, CO every summer. I was a singer, so I appreciated the music and the Corps, and seen several of the shows at Mile High Stadium. Watching the Finals on PBS, ESPN and on the Big Screen all these years has been a musical thrill. I'm 62 and I still love to watch these performances. GO DCI and all the Corp's, have a fantastic season.
My sister and I saw the first national PBS broadcast of DCI in 1975. We marched with a local corps in Los Angeles and both left the activity after 1973 for my sister and the 1974 season for myself. To make a long story short, we were so jazzed and excited at the high level of these corps in the broadcast, we decided to join the Anaheim Kingsmen for the 1976 season. So glad we did. I would have always wondered, "What if..." if I hadn't. It was a great experience.

I’ll never forget my short lived corp experience, and one and only DCI competition in Denver 1978? Damn it’s been a long time. A tiny, ragtag Arizona Corp- the Arizona Wranglers. Mostly funded by Stevie Nicks dad- Owner/founder of Legend City.
89 was my first year seeing the broadcast. My band director showed to us kids in jr high and my life has never been the same since! Hard to believe, but I ended up being on the finals night broadcast just 5 years later as a Colts member and have been a lifelong fan of the activity!!! Thanks for putting this together!!

I was glad to play a small role in this evolution. As an Indiana University student in 1980 I pushed the idea for the PBS station there to pick up the broadcast and envisioned it as sports entertainment that could someday air on the then-fledgling ESPN. I was proud to watch my vision become reality with the Bill Cook era and participated in a few live DCI championship productions (although Tom Blair was among the worst people I've worked with in my 45 years of broadcasting).
And what he's not saying is how accommodating, welcoming, and patient Steve has been for so many years. The technology has been daunting, but Steve has never let that get in the way of presenting a polished, professional, but also welcoming window into the community for so many people. There's a long list of people who every year show up and make it a great broadcast, in whatever form it takes. Steve is the voice of it, but he always represents a top-notch team that makes drum corps last forever instead of just one night.
wow!!! such a rich history! this gave me nostalgia even though I missed out on the first 37 years live, probably since I've seen so many videos and clips from the 70s 80s and 90s to today since I got into the activity in '09. it's really cool to get a inside perspective on where the activity was an how much it has grown over the years. Here's to another fantastic 50 years of drum corps!!
Marching with Troopers, Northglenn High School & Blue Knights (1979-1983) really means a lot to me. I really do not like the direction Marching Band International or High School Musical Gone Horribly Wrong International has gone or where they are going. Just in watching these documentaries, the crowds are Waaaaaaay smaller than what our era had. Makes me really sad to see a once great activity degraded like this. 😭
Unfortunately, in my opinion, dci, has turned the activity into a marching band competition, superimposed on a three-ring circus. They need to stop referring to the activity as DCI. Needs to be changed to MBI, marching band International. We no longer have real drum and bugle Corps. The marching bands of today do a great job but they are not, Real Drum and bugle c o r p s. Today they have electric guitars amplifiers microphones singing dancing and prancing drummers juggling arms flailing all over the place, rimshot at the rimshot, very little real drumming if any. I believe most of the population in the United States and Canada will agree with me. At one time this was one of the greatest youth activities throughout the United States and Canada, only people that are financially well off can afford to be a member. The cost of being a member plus the cost of traveling, is way way too expensive. At one time the activity withdraw more people as spectators, ahead of Major League Baseball. Today they're lucky to get 18 maybe 20,000 spectators? Years ago most local areas would have anywhere from one to possibly three competitions, on a single weekend that you could drive through within an hour or two. Today that's totally impossible. Consequently the audience have shrunk down to next to nothing. Real Drum and bugle Corps no longer exist. May they all rest in peace. Today's date September 10th 2022.

My son is marching Southwind. We already have tickets for the two days of Open Class Finals and three days of DCI finals. We cannot wait!!
