Big fan of Ultraviolet. It has a really nice in-between take on all those genres - rock, sludge, psychedelia. For someone who's new to the band, I found it attractive without being blown away. This new album is also sounding pretty solid so far. I'm really liking what the band is at the moment.

I really like the low volume of the vocals. It gives you a sense that they are an instrument in themselves, complementing the guitar lines rather than being thrust into the spotlight. Especially as they tend to follow the guitar melodies quite closely

Kylesa is becoming one of my most favorite metal band so far. For me personally I think the band is like a mix of Pink Floyd and Black Sabbath with a Hardcore Punk twist.

also philip cope i believe said in an interview that Moving Day is the third part of a trilogy consisting of "Dust" from Spiral Shadow and "Low Tide" from Ultraviolet. kinda cool to listen to the three together if you have the chance

Great review man! I think you summed it all pretty well. Exhausting Fire was their last album before they decided to put the band into a hiatus state and you can easily feel throughout the whole listening that the guys were getting, well exhausted haha! Not a bad album per say, but you can really hear that they were starting to be out of breath and inspiration, getting lost between different weird genres and styles, not knowing where to stand anymore. I think it was wise from them to put the band on ice, obviously they were heading into a solid concrete wall and they stopped at the right time. A good decision before starting to ruin their sound & discography.

I don't mind when a band "evolves" or changes.
But I definitely prefer the heavier Kylesa stuff. This record's production is also a little thin for their style.
I give it a solid "meh".

Anthony, when are you gonna review the new Killing Joke album Pylon? It's been sitting firmly at no.1 in the UK rock album charts since it was released a few weeks back. First time they've charted since the mid 80's. It's a cracking album, would love to hear your thoughts on it.

My Warlock in D&D is named Kylesa and it's kind of a badass sounding name(the Buddhist meaning of the word is actually a good description of my character). I couldn't remember for a while where I got the name from and then I remembered my ex loves Kylesa. Anyway, now I am compelled to listen to this album.

Kylesa is one of my favorite bands and I kind of agree with you, they definitely hit their peak with Static Tensions and Spiral Shadow. 7 is a fair rating.
As for what to review next, I know it's late but maybe the new BTBAM album that came out in July? It would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

I agree with a lot of your points here, but (as a drummer) a lot of the drum parts stick out to me, especially the fact that they have two drummers. I definitely encourage seeing these guys live if you have the chance just to watch the way those two drummers work together. It's truly impressive. One of my favourite releases of the year.
    Light 9 for me, honestly.
However, a band that Kylesa toured with called Indian Handcrafts put out a rather crunchy record this year, that I'd definitely recommend listening to!

Love this album. Yes, one can get nerdy analytical about it, but turn it up and work out to it, it's great. Love the riffs and the eerie feels. Did not like the Sabbath cover, though - a miss for me. But nevermind that, it's a great album.

I disagree with your use of the word "boring" to define vocals on this album. I like the contrast between HEAVY SWAMPY SLUDGE mixed with the soft, almost haunting vocals. This album is heavy while chill, and you can't find that everywhere. The conclusion of the album with a slowed version of "Paranoid" should be viewed as a bonus track, like the "I'm a Marionette" cover on Ghost's Infestissumam. While slower, it fits the rest of the album, and I'd much rather hear someone attempt to make a cover their own than just hearing the same song replayed. Exhausting Fire is among my favorites for this year. The album sounds great through my personal stereo and feels amazing live. How man metal bands use a theremin on stage?
