I have an e39 523i manual with M50 inlet manifold, short shift, eibach and bilsteins, 200cell cats and rear box delete, Msport anti roll bars and poly bushes. Handles beautifully, straight six sounds wonderful and is reasonably quick on the road. Very happy.
Just respect your car, look after it well and enjoy every ride. Remember, it's one of the last true "analog" cars, made for people and for a joy of driver. It was an idea, not just a car.
My parents don't drive anymore so I've had the absolute privilege of inheriting their E39 525i and what a beauty of a car. Truly makes me happy every time I drive it
@@lukezi3952 not really. New cars are, faster, safer, but are not better. Why? Because they will never last nor age as good as old cars. Built quality is terrible and they are made out of cheap materials no matter how expensive the car is. That is why I am gave my wife g30 and both myself e39 :)
523i is not a 2.3 liter engine but old generation of 2.5 liter engine and it has 170hp. After facelift it was changed to 520i 2.2l engine m54b22 with the same 170hp. If i remember correctly, 525i after facelift has 192 hp and it was 2.5L engine
I have a 2.0 liter 520i and get along fine with it. Not the raw power like some here but the engine is free revving and delightfully smooth sounding…….😊!
I have owned a 528i and I still have 3 540i ,for reliability it's definitely the 528i but I don't believe that for the price value you can't beat the 540i compared to any vehicle, I truly believe it is the best car for the money on the planet, so if you can pick one up asap they will only be going up in value, Msport low mileage with log book that's been serviced regularly, you won't regret it.

M50 has a cast iron block which makes it a one love for me. And m52b28TU has iron coating which solves problem of cylinder wear

I hope that all of you understand the excellence of all of these motors available for the E39 platform, - the last of the 20th Century 5 series that are user friendly and maintainable if you truly are what my generation calls each other, "gearheads". The M cars are beyond that and are what we call; "a hole in the street that you pour money into"', even if you are, in your own mind, a shit hot track-day driver.
I owned a 96 E39 and was the best car I’ve ever had. Such a smooth well handling car without being too harsh on the bumps. Shame the new BMWs aren’t as reliable long term. They’re all designed to fall to bits at 100000 now.
e46 is overall just a better platform though but obviously didn't come with a v8. however the e39 v8's or any bmw v8s for that matter aren't really known for being reliable.
bought an e39 2000 540iA m sport original engine has 139k w timing chain issue . bought same m62tu (85k) for 2k . car is about to be done after replacing water pump , AC and Serp belt , spark plugs , thermostat
LOL there is no replacement for displacement, the 523i has a 2.5l engine and is 0.6s faster to 100 than the 520i 2.2. Horsepower is just a peak rating, it’s about the curve!

@@PowerslideSWE The alpina b10 v8s produces 375bhp at 5800rpm vs the 395bhp at 6600rpm of the m5, but the v8s makes 10nm more torque than the m5 at the same rpm. There's very little in it tbh, but the Alpina wins for pure comfort and exclusivity. Auto vs manual is the core of the argument 😅

Hello there, it has the same engine as the 525i the m52b25 it's just slightly down tuned. Believe it has a different inlet manifold. But putting the m50 manifold on it and a more free flowing exhaust and you are looking at about 200 horses out of it.

The "sound" is much to loud. Why? Because not a single E39 is equipped with a stock exhaust.

I think your 530i acceleration is actually an E34 with the M60B30 V8. Definitely doesn’t sound like an M54
Judging from the gauge cluster it looks like its an E39 because the fuel consumption meter goes to 30l's while the E39 one is blanc
It's a v8 e39 I dont know the model, but you can see the rev limiter starts at 5800 rpm and not at 6100 rpm that the i6 have.

I think 5.30i is the sweet spot with the auto transmission. Both comfy and fast.
