  • In this video Bram shows you how a gi should fit.
The perfect fit is different for everyone, some people like a tailored fit, others like a loose fit. We hope this video will give you some guide lines.
In the second part of the video Bram tells a couple of things you should keep in mind regarding the gi you would like to use for BJJ tournaments.
For all the gi requirements the IBJJF sets for competition, you can visit: ibjjf.com/uniform/

Keep in mind that this is how a gi should fit after you washed it.
Shrinkage can differ per brand, and sometimes even per model. In general, if you wash a gi at 30 degrees celsius and let it hang dry, it will shrink about a centimeter in length for the sleeves and the pants.

why would ripstop not be allowed if it's made in 100% cotton or a polycotton blend? i've had people compete in my ripstop gis at IBJJF tournaments with no issues in the past.

Is there any guidance on length to ensure they are not too long in the arm or leg, or this just a case of ‘whatever doesn’t trip you up/feel like a straight jacket’?

Yes, there is IBJJF rules on sleeve from wrist and leg sleeve from ankle hehe

It is probably smart to have your gi as short as possible to not give your opponent any extra material to grip but keep shrinkage from washing in mind :)
A too long gi can be annoying since it can become a bit longer during training because of the pulling and gripping on it. You can for example slip when the pants are pulled over your heels and you try to do a move while standing.

@@theaarongarcia how do you tailor? I'm really new to BJJ and I bought the smallest adults gi. It's over sized but not massively. Just doing my first wash right now

Hi. I'm new to BJJ. I am 5ft3in. In the uk the smallest gi size is A0 before it goes into kids sizes. The A0 is designed for 5ft4in to 5ft6.
I bought it and it is baggy (a bit over sized), I expected this. So I put it in the wash 5 mins ago. Will the Gi shrink on the first wash? I bought the original tatami V2 Gi
