- Living as a foreigner in Austria specifically living in Vienna comes with it's own unique experience. Whether you are living in Austria as an American, or you are living in Austria as an Iranian woman which is the case of the interviewee in this video. She shares her experience not only as a foreigner living in Austria but also living in Austria as an international student. Of course considering that I am team Germany, it was interesting to contrast living in Austria vs Germany in some of the points mentioned. In this video we touch on the pros and cons of living in Austria as a foreigner.

I'm want to move here from Russia and since almost all European countries labeled me as a war criminal just for having wrong passport I left only with Germany and Austria. And damn... Austria seems so much better. Alps, beautiful nature, better weather, historical architecture, less leftist craziness going on, less chance of getting killed by some lazy bum from Middle East who lives on working class taxes and is useless to the economy.
Great video. As an Austrian citicen I must say all what the Iraninan girl said is true. Peoples have a lot of prejudices against people from the middle east since the Islamic terrorism in Europe begun. One thing which is very good in Austria is the helath care system and insurance system. Everything is nearly free. Every working person pays a part of its income into this helath care system. When you loose your job you still get money for example. One thing at least: In Austria we don´t speak german with an different accent, Austrian german is a little bit a different language with its own vocabulary. It is a little bit like American and British English. 🙂

when you lose your job, you dont automatically get social help. I am Austrian and I started working after finishing my master's degrees and had to quit after 7months due to overwork. The social welfare bureau rejected my application because I haven't worked for long enough. I was on the brink of having to move back to my parents' appartment because I had no money and no help.

Don't worry about it. It isn't really a different language. The vocabulary differences are very minor. It's like how American's say pants, and English say trousers. In german, they may say paradisers for tomatoes, and austrians say tomaten. Or Confiture, in germany, and marmalade in austria.

@@Victor-kt6qn Austria is a very traditional conservative country, landlocked...no sea. So historicaly are not connected to foreigners from other geo. regions... they still need to learn and adapt to foreigners...things are much better now than previous years.

@@anca9931 well said!...in history a country's growth has happend only when thers an influx of foreigners stepping in to make that happen. The foreign group comes in different shapes, from tourists, a cheap labour force, refugees or marriage...etc...etc... the list is long. Austria is no exception, throughout history they've had foreign workers from neighbouring countries as well as refugees + tourists...the only difference now is media. This platform highlights positive or negative.Sadly its popular in Austria when it comes to foreigners to often report on the negatives regarding them, hardly ever a positive is highlighted. Unfortunately 99% of all media here is backed by 1 political party or another so there's mostly a biased hidden agenda in reporting. We have to also remember 3IMPORTANT points about Austrians... they are not keen on anyone, they even complain and 'name call' their sister neighbours, the Germans...so imagine what people from further afield! 2ndly, there are quite alot of Austrians (especially in Vienna) who are only 2nd generation Austrian but actually origionate from neighbouring countries like Hungary, Serbia, Czeck, Slovskia..etc..etc.. and like in any country with new nationals, such people can overcompensate their new identity but still excercise old rooted cultural mentality. So sometimes the difficult Austrian may only be a 2nd generation hicup. Lastly, and this may be the most important point! Austrian people in other regions outside of Vienna, usually are warmer more flexible and happy go lucky...Vienna is not the only example of Austrian people, the capital city is natuarly the main place where most foreigners will be but its not the only point of experiences to make a final decision on the country. In other Austrian regions its well known that Vienese have a impatient, dry, arrogant tick... and jokes are made about them. Its like in most countries where 1 region has a different mindset to another. Lets be honest, racism exists everywhere. If we narrow it down to Europe...then England and France share the trophy for racism.However the Parisien French are World famous for their rudness. Both countries have a sea, so historicsly have had foreigners enter their culture for centuries and yet they still aren't used to them and pick pick pick. The English don't like the Irish or Scots or even each other's own social classes. The French don't like anyone who eats different to them. The northern Italians dislike their southern Italian brothers. Austria is new at the forigner game, yes they need to be more accepting, such things tend to happen easier after 3 generations, whdn everyone on both sides is more settled. However, its not only Austrians to blame, the foreigners also sometimes need to be more flexible and try to fit in.

My boyfriend has an Middle Eastern name but he grew up in Austria so his German is perfect! He never had troubles finding a job
Of course in any country, Germamy, Austria Switzerland etc, your ability to speak the official language flawlessly is a very strong determining factor (in addition to skill and qualifications of course) as to whether you get the job or not. Nobody is saying otherwise
Well i speak German perfect too but it was never easy to get an invitation. Once i got an invitation, and they asked me if i was an islamic terorisst. 🙄
In school they treated me and other turkish foreigners very hard compared with the Bio-Austrians. I grew up with Neo-Nazks in the Neighborhood.

How can i join one of the prestigious universities in Austria?
When I grew up in Vienna I did not see a single black person NOT dealing with drugs for years (that was over 1 1/2 decades ago). The last day when I left Vienna one foreigner threw another foreigner on a (slowly) driving by car. The people in Austria are very diverse there are good people and bad people so even if you stay there for 10 years it depends which group you will meet. The good people are usually more silent than the bad ones.
I now live in a country where foreigners have a good reputation -- in particular because a significant group does not live on social welfare, and helped to improve the country. And I am a native Austrian.

No! austrians are still good in racism. That's the difference.
When they ask their dumb questions and after they hear you or your parents came from middle east country, then they suddenly change their behaviour, although before that dumb question, they were friendly.
Here in austria as a Turk i will never be accepted because Austrians hate Turks in general. And you can be integrated as hell, it makes no difference. Austrians are very good racists. This is my conclusion.

The thing with the nationality in a CV isn’t a thing in Austria, I did not put it in there and never had an issue. I even had a meeting with services which specialise in employability of foreigners and they also said you don’t have to state your nationality in your CV.

well, that is what it is. Always when most of the Austrians ask me where i am from, they despite to talk to me and the small talk is over and they have name for Foreigner which is TSCHUSCH. But not everyone is acting like that.
Tschusch is used for eastern Europeans because of the many "tsch" sounds in slavic languages...

For example: chips, chair, choice and so on...According to your comment it means, that english speaking countries are also "Tschuschen". Spanish : chico and so on. The "Tsch" sound is also included in other languages.
And, if you take look at the map, Vienna is closer to east than "east european" Prague.
@@olafkunert3714 no, it is for former Yugoslav immigrants, and the word in Serbs-Croatian means "listen", used as an injection in spoken language - so the Austrians heard it so often when listening to these people speak it sort of stuck and became a term to name these people.

I was just in Austria for the first time and relieved to see a people full of pride in themselves with a strong sense of how to run a country properly and a vision for the future. If you’re unhappy, as an immigrant, about how you’re treated in a foreign country and want to be worshipped for your “diversity” then try the UK or USA.

i am iranian and moved to norway 30 yrs ago. i spent 2 yrs of my life in norway and eventually moved to america. leaving europe and coming to USA was the best decision i ever made. norway was racist, unwelcoming and ignorant. americans are warm, welcoming and accepting. diference is black and night. god bless america

The truth is, the 80s and 90s was the best time to move to the U.S but not anymore. Anyone moving to the U.S now is only going to get the remnants of benefits before the place crashes itself.

Well, as far as i get that it can be annoying and sad, people have to know why these behaviours still happen. It's because most of the time, middle east immigrants tend to impose their way of life into the public domain; and since there are more middle east immigrants compare to european immigrants overall (in Europe at least), native tend to be scared. Which can be understandable. And it's a half french half iranian who is telling you this.

Hi, dear watchers. I'm working in a position where I decide which application gets a closer look. Let me correct something: It isn't obligatory to have a picture in your CV. But it increases your chances, that's true. Why? Well, Austria is not a traditional job-hopper country, we employ applicants to stay for decades (in the best case). So we want to know if the applicant fits in the team. An applicant dressed up like a goth wouldn't be appropriate. Now, I know, this is an open door for prejudice and racism-related decisions, that's true, so I'm absolutely in favour of the idea to ban pictures in the first round of decisions. However, keep in mind that including a picture can potentially save time for both sides: For the applicant because if the negative decision of the company was racially motivated...who would work for such a company, anyway? And for the company, by seeing right from the beginning if the applicant is what they expect for their team.
It is not everything about racism at the end.

Yes I am sure everyone has bad experiences but Europeans have it easier in general. You know why? Because when you visit or live in our continents especially Africa we are generally welcoming and kind- have always been- to our detriment. When we go overseas SOME of the people there act like immigration is something they have never seen before.

I can't help thinking that demanding a picture on the CV stands only for blatant racism. In my country is even forbidden for employers to demand a picture and nobody puts it. The concerning part is that I once saw a research which most recruiters in Germany thought that the picture on the CV is important. Important for what?

It is unfortunately very true. Us Austrians are unfortunately not too fond of foreigners (might it be racism or xenophobia). About those "dumb" questions. I think you should be happy with that. If we ask you about your culture, that is already a pretty big step of acceptance and shows you that people like and trust you. So yeah, for foreigners I get that this might be strange and maybe annoying, but put yourself in our shoes. If you would meet an alien, you just don't care where they are from and not ask about their culture, their language, their food, what clothes they wear? Also, how should we learn about your country otherwise? Google it and get random and sometimes wrong information?
Haha do you compare the arrival of Alien beings to Earth with the arrival of a Muslim in Austria? It seems that the comparison itself is inappropriate. I'm here watching the video and the comments because I'm expected to move to Vienna after receiving an offer from one of the major hospitals in Austria, and the offer is important for my career, even though it may require me to leave my homeland and roots. Sometimes you must understand that we don't migrate to your countries because we genuinely want to be there, but it's a necessity that expands our experience and improves our professional career. Your governments are the ones recruiting us to fill the vacant positions that require our expertise, like in the healthcare field, for example. We eat like regular people, dress like regular people, and we are friendly and kind. Thats why you may all ask sometimes dumb question and i undrestand, Now wfter seeing what's happening in Palestine, I'm starting to feel fear about traveling to a country that supports Israel in a war that kills women and children. You also quickly believe today that Hamas is a terrorist organization, and Israel is trying to eliminate it. you don't know that the truth is that Palestine is a land stolen by the Israelis since 1948, and they killed those in it, and that Hamas are the owners of the land, and they fight for their land. They only fight soldiers, but Israel is committing genocide against the people of Gaza because it cannot confront Hamas, and it has committed heinous war crimes:
- The number of casualties from the Israeli aggression on Gaza has risen to 9,500 killed, with 22,219 injured. Among the casualties of the widespread Israeli attack on Gaza were 3,648 children and 2,290 women.
- The killing of about 500 people in the bombing of the al-Muadhamiya hospital in Gaza.
- Israeli shelling of the largest refugee camp in Gaza, with about 400 killed.
- Cutting off basic supplies such as electricity, water, fuel, and food from Gaza.
- Use of internationally prohibited weapons.
- Preventing the entry of relief aid.
You cannot say that any war has casualties. There are international and humanitarian laws that determine what can and cannot be done during armed conflicts, and your countries are the ones that have established these laws.
I understand that the dialogue has become political now, but it has a significant impact on social life and the relationship between societies. politics determines this, and you should reassess your view of us by looking at your governments because humanity, principles, values, and ethics have become clear who holds them and who does not.
@@wolfganghaiden5817 as a junior doctor who’s Arab and Muslim it’s quite frighting for me to take a step forward and come to Austria despite reaching a B2 level in German. I think racist people would only push highly-qualified individuals away. My family starting from my grandma to my mom to my father all went into university and are very well-educated but only in Europe had I got the feeling that we are not. That definitely doesn’t change the way I think of myself and my family but it definitely consumes your energy and I am not sure I could handle that. That’s why I am thinking of going to the UK despite the lack of jobs over there.

I would never live in Vienna. I was in Vienna in the 80's. I have lived there for 4 years. I returned to the US. It was horrible. This was before the internet era. As soon as the person picked up the phone and hear a foreigner. They would slam the phone , "kein Auslander, BITTE". The person pretty much cursed at you. Even if you managed to find a place, they could kick you out anytime. In those days, there were lot of widows left from WWII and they were miserable complaining Bit##es. You can't even walk in your room, because those old buildings those hardwood floor were shaky and noisy. So the downstair old people always complain about noise. They were rude, depressing people. Though the health care is universal, even those doctors were prejudice. The dentist broke one of my molar teeth. As a foreigner, nobody cares. In USA that dentist could be sued. I would never live in Vienna. As an American, my country is better.
