I always thought this song was about two different relationships; A woman unsuccessfully trying to please her man, and a guy who is "controlled" by his chick ..they try to figure out how to save their relationship but both fail..They end up leaving their partners and some time later they meet and fall in love with each other. - "Do you like sweet potato?"
I think Sweet Potato is more about the cycles of intimacy and less about two people parting. Regardless, thank you for posting a clean audio of the song.
Me too, but i also think it is kind of like a sort of reverse progression of a relationship. From the beginning, where they have been a couple for a while, to the end, where "she's glad they've finally met." It really is a beautiful song, and it shows both the feelings of love and the feelings of depression. The music video is pretty nice, but kind of wanted a little less repetition. Sorry for the length, lol.
Only Sia can use Sweet potato to make a song about agony of miscommunication between lovers. She is absolutely right were not psychic to always understand what our partners feels and wants.
She cooks you sweet potato you don't like aubergine She knows to boil the kettle when you hum bars from grease She senses you are lonely but still she can't be sure And so she stands and waits, stands anticipating (your thoughts) How can she become the psychic that she longs to be to understand you How can she become the psychic that she longs to be to understand you He brushes thoroughly He know she likes fresh breath He rushes to the station He waits atop the steps He's brought with him a Mars bar She will not buy Nestle And later he'll perform A love-lorn serenade, a trade How can he become the psychic that he longs to be to understand you How can he become the psychic that he longs to be to understand you So give her information to help her fill the holes Give an ounce of power so he does not feel controlled Help her to acknowledge the pain that you are in Give to him a glimpse of that beneath your skin Now my inner dialogue is heaving with detest I am a martyr and a victim and I need to be caressed I hate that you negate me, I'm a ghost at beck and call I'm failing and placating, and berating myself for staying I'm a fool I'm a fool He greets the stranger meekly a thing that she accepts She sees him waiting often with chocolate on the steps He senses she is lonely she's glad they finally met They take each other's hands walk into the sunset Do you like sweet potato?
I think it relates to one of the other songs on the album this song is from, The Bully. I believe that it shows her regret and guilt for past mistakes and how all her wrong actions are haunting her, and now she realizes she was wrong. It could be that she is telling the present and having a flashback, or that she is telling a story and inserts a clip of her own. But that's just a theory.
I admire the work that was put into this, but as others have said i do wish there was more yellow and other warm colors, fitting the theme of love and referencing the album cover. Also, i like the walking, showing the progression of love. But i kin of would like thereto be more personal shots (i.e. More actual faces, or two people walking into the sunset when it says "walk into the sunset). Lastly, I understand the repetition and how all the scenes in the song are all similar, but i just kind of feel like i imagined a different image for this song. Sorry for ranting, this is a great video though! :-)
Hey Luke thx for your response May b I just looked at it in a very surreal way like only shadows and no faces To tell the story I wanted I know it could have been more personal Thx
No I fully see where you are coming from, this truly is a piece of art, and who is to say what art is bad. There are many depressing moments in this song, and it only makes sense to have things of that nature like shadows and black and white images. I was just hoping to offering you my take on this piece, sorry if it came out the wrong way.
This is a good video overall since you captured the mood of this song but I feel that you failed to show the main topic of this song, the interaction between the couple. There should've been observed interactions occurring between the two people, not just repetitious shots of their shadows on pavements. But then I'm probably interpreting the song differently from you. Still though, nice video. :]
You made this? Not bat, I like the walking shadow and the out of focus lights. But the shaky came and fast cuts to match the beat don't work. Its so scrambled more of a techno feel rather then a soft beat by Sia. I'd suggest staying away from the insane fast cuts and flashed. And more just on the story your trying to tell.
this song is beautiful, no words can be used to describe it ... its so unique . i love sia for life XO
13 years later still?

Great job worked perfectly with the song's mood. BTW it's one of my favorite songs of hers, thanks for posting :)

Keep it up.
She cooks you sweet potato you don't like aubergine
She knows to boil the kettle when you hum bars from grease
She senses you are lonely but still she can't be sure
And so she stands and waits, stands anticipating (your thoughts)
How can she become the psychic that she longs to be to understand you
How can she become the psychic that she longs to be to understand you
He brushes thoroughly
He know she likes fresh breath
He rushes to the station
He waits atop the steps
He's brought with him a Mars bar
She will not buy Nestle
And later he'll perform
A love-lorn serenade, a trade
How can he become the psychic that he longs to be to understand you
How can he become the psychic that he longs to be to understand you
So give her information to help her fill the holes
Give an ounce of power so he does not feel controlled
Help her to acknowledge the pain that you are in
Give to him a glimpse of that beneath your skin
Now my inner dialogue is heaving with detest
I am a martyr and a victim and I need to be caressed
I hate that you negate me, I'm a ghost at beck and call
I'm failing and placating, and berating myself for staying
I'm a fool
I'm a fool
He greets the stranger meekly a thing that she accepts
She sees him waiting often with chocolate on the steps
He senses she is lonely she's glad they finally met
They take each other's hands walk into the sunset
Do you like sweet potato?
+californyaeh What is your interpretation of the elevated vocals bit starting from 'Now my inner Dialogue' ending with 'I'm a fool?'
