I knew it had to be a cop or a baby. I've seen many instances over the year where deputies would do a scoop and run like this if an ambulance or paramedics wasn't on the scene yet. County Fire is slow as fuq. It ain't like you see on Emergency! Three or four minutes to leave the station sometimes and another minute or so to get inside once on scene, they lost their hustle long ago. When I was a kid I remember forty years ago I remember seeing overweight captains jump off the truck, grab the resuscitator and run for the front door because they still knew they were paid lifesavers. Now the only time the run is if the call is a fire or something free is being given out.
LASD called it leapfrogging back in the 90's and 2000's. The second in line always gets the next intersection. I remember being in the bookman position one night doing rolling hard down Imperial Hwy at 115 mph to deputies involved in a brawl, not fight at a bar in Santa Fe Springs. Above a d beyond an e-ticket ride for sure. In this scenario, more often than not deputies would do scoop-and-run with a second deputy either in the passenger or backseat with the kid rolling for the hospital well before fire was on scene.
Had a near drowning back in 1982 in San Diego County. I had 3 San Diego Sheriff running block for 45 miles. As I entered Poway, I picked up an additional 5 cars. This was before the dept had Paramedics. Basic Life Support was it. Top speed was 80 mph. We did not slow down for any traffic lights, (they were secured by the Sheriff 's Department.

Does anyone know if each officer chooses the specific sound of their siren (e.g. from a list of choices on the switches) or is it generally whatever each car is fitted with as a main siren?
What the other person said it correct, the older ones have three but nowadays they make them with tons of various tones. Some even have a rumbler siren which has the normal high pitched but simultaneously plays a very vibration heavy siren that can still be heard over loud music, or in "sound proof" cars.
The sad thing is that most of the time not every time but most of the time when that many cops are escorting an ambulance like that it’s a officer down.
Can i see your evidence and statistics? You're actually completely wrong, most injured police don't even ride in ambulances they don't sit and wait, they load and go. Most police escorts are usually for severely injured children but in a whole escorts are rarely done due to their above already dangerous drive
Video is from 5 years ago. Some of those CVPIs were only 6 years old at the time. To this day though they still have quite a few Crown Vics because the California climate isn't hard on the bodies. Also, LAPD and LASD have a really good maintenance budget so the cars are well cared for.
Happens all the time, FD personnel ride with the ambulance crews to assist and help while the other drives the vehicle to hospital to pick up said member
I've always seen it done like that in LA. Here in FL if that happens, the FD just goes non emergency to the hospital, they don't follow with lights and sirens.
What the other comments say is mostly true. You see rescue squads, as seen in this video, are ALS stocked. Most AMR and other local providers are only BLS since the fire departments do the treatment. Thus, they have a paramedic who is ALS trained (hence paramedic and not EMT) riding in the back of the ambulance, likely with an EMT. The rescue squad follows 'Code R' as they like to call it Because their partner is inside the vehicle, and they have any other equipment on board that may be necessary if the patient goes downhill and the ambulance needs to stop. And lastly, this isn't an official reason, but if the ambulance gets into an accident while en route to hospital, they luckily have the Squad right behind them so it can stop and render aid. It's a pretty good system. Note that Cities in California often have their own rescue ambulances which are generally paramedic, and sometimes BLS if the department is big enough, while counties run rescue squads and contract with private ambos.
I saw a similar setup like this in Broward County, Fla. For a medical emergency, a fire truck gets dispatched along with a paramedic unit driving trucks similar to the one shown here, along with a private ambulance. All that manpower for one emergency. Then they went and got rid of those utility type trucks and bought those large ambulance trucks like International and Freightliner make, thus eliminating the need for a fire truck and private ambulance to respond though the fire engines do occasionally respond for assistance because the county only staffs 2 paramedics per truck compared to the cities which have a crew of 3.

As a German EMT. I would love this sort of support from our PDs. The ability to have intersections shut down for us would allow us to just speed through with out having to slow down to a crawl or traffic in general. Tbe reason why we don't do this in Germany is a lack of coordination between units. Partly due to our seperated dispatch. I did have an injured in my rig once and got a similar escort.

Well this is kind of interesting. Fire was following the ambulance so if they worked way we work, chances are the two Medics were in the back working on the patient and the OIC from that squad might have been driving an ambulance. The driver usually stays the driver for the apparatus for Fire because they know their truck. As far as a police escort that's a whole nother story.
