What do you think of Full Color Night Vision? Do you need it or not?

I own the CX410 which is much better in the dark !! Take a look at LifeHackster's channel. He knows everthing about the Reolink camera's.
Anyway, thanks for the video !

I have had it for some time. Upgrading from a 1440p camera.
    Main points:
    - The FOV is smaller. Not much, old one was 2.8mm and the CX810 is 4mm.
    - Audio quality is good ("good" as in "good for a security cam")
    - The night time performance varies, I had just a single street light in front of my drive way and it is not enough. It is overblown under the light, but there is not enough detail in the shadows. I also have some bollard lights in the drive way, and thankfully I can just turn them on a low intensity and it is more than enough. So you do need somewhat even lighting in all areas, you can't just rely on indirect light. I have a motion sensor anyway (besides the one already in the camera) that will turn on outdoor lights, so not an issue for me.
    - The spotlight function is stupid (or maybe I just don't understand it). You can leave it in different modes, but one mode just turns them on when it is dark. I don't want that. Another mode turns them on if there is motion detected - perfect, right? No, because you have to set a fixed on/off time where it will do this - for example from 18:00 to 07:00. So in the summer time it will light up the spotlights when the sun is still shining, and in the winter it will be dark for a couple of hours before the spotlights turn on. I really don't undertstand why they did not combine the modes, so it lights up on motion only if it is dark.

Colour night vision needs decent light on most cameras, even those designated as "colour night vision"
The smaller FOV is actually better for image quality. The narrower the FOV, the more quality you get in the space. Sometimes you want a general view, sometimes that slightly narrower FOV helps with clarity of the image and recognition

@@EsotericArctos Of course a narrow FOV is better for image quality, but better image quality doesn't help you film the areas the camera can't reach...

@@RonsonDenmark True, and I have several general view cameras with wide FOV, but they are not really much use for anything other than personal use as the footage is not good for recognition. I use some narrower FOV camera's to focus on more critical areas where the footage can be used for legal recognition. :)

@@EsotericArctos In my situation I have a wide but close area, everything i would need to film is within 5-15 meters. So 4K would be fine with a 2.8mm camera for me. It's just something to keep in mind when thinking about a new camera, for some reason Reolink only makes this as a 4mm.

@@RonsonDenmark To be honest, as much as I love this channel, I would not really look at Reolink for high quality images anyway. I know they are cheap, and they are good enough for the price point, but if I wanted higher quality, these are not a camera I'd choose. I get why the reviews are all around, some companies send a lot of free stuff out...

Nice review.. I've been looking into this CX810 and also running physical tests right now with the CX410 (the lower-res version of this). Some reviewers say that the CX410 is actually better at looking in the dark due to it being the same amount of light on less pixel (in other words, more light per pixel on the sensor).
Also keep in mind that platforms like Scrypted, HomeKit and Google Home don't work well with H265 and need H264. You can't set the CX810 to H264 with a toggle. Only when downgrading the camera resolution will the camera switch to H264, 4k is always at H265. But downgrading the resolution is pointless on the CX810.. you might as well get the CX410 if you're going to do that.

Brilliant video....but something all these reviews are missing for me is: With the spotlight on at different levels, how much light is it putting out from an intruder's perspective? ie if you were to record with your other camera at iso500... is it a bright spotlight?

Thanks for the review. I am concerned about your night time view where you only saw the sky. Can you show a couple more tests where the sky isn't visible? I don't want to run a spot light but I would like to have the night vision. Thanks again for your work.

To be honest, I am more interested in how good the IR night vision is on these. Reolink have not been very good with IR Night vision in the past. There are a lot of situations where using lighting to give full colour night vision would not be appropriate.

Downsides?? You can't criticize a camera because of features it lacks but are available in other Reolink cameras. Only poe, fixed focal length, not remotely movable, no wi-fi??? Reolink sells cameras with all of those features if you want them. You just have the buy the camera with the features you want.
