Thanks for another great tutorial Ed! You explain everything thoroughly, in an easy to follow format. I always pause/play to follow along using the HA companion app on my phone. Sometimes for testing and review, I'll replicate your automations exactly as you set them up in the visual editor, then go back & edit to add my devices. I like to review the YAML and traces to see what's going on behind the curtain. I've learned a lot from you and I'm still very grateful for the trigger ID tutorial as it's helped me consolidate and reduce the number of automations significantly. Thank you sir! 👏
I finally implemented this. Thanks for another great tutorial. In addition to changing the Away and Home modes of my HVAC system using this method, I'm also controlling the interior lighting of my home (we have ambient lighting come on at dusk - but they don't need to be on if we aren't home - and we would like it turned back on when we return and it's dark). I also have the departing portion of this automation automatically arming our security system in Away mode if we leave and forget to arm the system!
Thank you again for a very helpful video! I seem to have no heating on so I wanted to try to change this Automation to turn outside light on so I can see to get in at night, but unsure on how to change it at Video time: 12:19 any chance you can do a video on this kind of setup or a link if you already have be great thanksk again!
Great Video, I am finding your videos very helpful. I have a question and everything I can find seems very complicated. I would like to setup and automation to tell me when my device moves a certain distance from another. For example when the dog's whistle Tracker moves a set distance from a person's cell phone. Like is there a way to setup a dynamic zone around your cell phone? Thanks again for the great videos.
Your videos are awesome!! Thank you for taking the time to teach us! Your explanations are great. I am going to implement this. Question: instead of programming my “home” and “away” temperatures as set values, is there a way to make them variables that I can control on my dashboard? Thanks!!!
Bedankt, Ed! PS blijf zo doorgaan!
Thanks. I do not use Node Red. I don't think it's needed because you can do everything with stock automations. But, I get that people like to use Node Red when they are not so technical. Although Node Red can get pretty complicated as well when you create complex automations.

Great video! is there a way to use the triggers in a script or helper so that the presence detection can be used in multiple automations, rather than having to create multiple automations with the same triggers?
This video is brilliant thank you, i am new to HA and just followed your Alarmo video also so easy to follow. I have just followed this video and when you add the heating i added the Alarmo arm and disarm instead to automate the arming and disarming of my alarm hopefully i have done it correct and will test tomorrow. is there any additional steps you would add or take away to use this proximity with Alarmo arming and disarming that i may of over looked again many thanks from a new subscriber.
thank you for the video! Just to confirm - you definitely need to have remote access turned on in order to utilise the proximity / presence detection feature on HA? Thanks
Brilliant video. I was able to get my rules setup the way I wanted. I did a test, I left my house and it turned off my heating. But when I returned to the house, it was still showing my location as away. To get it to update I had to turn location off on my phone and turn it back on. Then it instantly recognised that I was at home and turned my heating back on. I wonder if GPS is spotty in my area? I must have a look at see if I can set the automation to turn on high accuracy mode while I am away, then turn it off while I am at home. But your video was awesome and really easy to understand and follow. Thank you for your hard work in putting it together.
Thank you for your kind words. As far as I understood from others, some phones refresh not that often. I also use my router as tracking device so that my status will be home as soon as I am connected to WiFi.
@@SmartHomeJunkie Thank you for the very fast response. I should have said I am using OnePlus 11 as my tracker running OS Android 14. One thing I have setup is only use high accuracy mode when my device is connected to my cars Bluetooth. That means I don't have to run high accuracy all the time. I also have to zones setup home and work. I am currently at home. I have a rule setup for both home and work. I noticed that when I turned off the location and turned it back on, it kicked off the away routine for work as well. I am looking to see if I can edit it so for it to be applicable you have to be at work first, for it to run. If that makes sense!

Yeahhh brilliant matey has my wife contacted you to tell you to make a special tutorial for me telling you how much I have been driving her crazy trying to sort geofencing and Alarmo to work together 🤣 Thanks for this one matey its helped me massively !
Hello, first of all great video! I just have two question: - it's mandatory to have HA Cloud? Cause if my HA is already reacheable from the outside it should work right? - I noticed , even if on my iPhone the tracking for HA is set on ALWAYS, that the location is only updated when I open the app itsel. Did I configure something wrong or am I missing something here? Thanks again for your wonderful work!
You do not need cloud to make this work, but you do need to make your HA remotely accessible. There are various ways to do that. Cloud is the easiest way, but you have choices here.
@@SmartHomeJunkie Thank you very much for the answer. I'll double check my settings in the WE if I find finally time. Thank you again for your wonderful tutorials!
I learned alot of your video. Thanx!: - zone.thuis doesn't use attributes but just the state - I can combine automatisations with trigger ID's and IF-statements.
Question- When you created the 3rd/4th triggers why didn't you just use the Time and Location > Zone trigger? Also not sure if it is because of updates to HA but (Now) when you create the Trigger IDs, later when you are showing the "Then Do" portion it will show all Approach / Leaving IDs, so 2 Approach / Leaving, 4 total vs just 2 in your video.
Thanks a lot! Unfortunately, I cannot leave the number of thumbs up I would like to. Great explanation of a heating setup that I will adapt for my home assistant. Honestly, I think your home is quite freezing. Nevertheless, I'd rather choose higher temperatures in order to prevent some arguments with my wife. 😉
I want to "RUN" this automation remotely after a guest messes with the Thermostat. How can I tell if State "zone.home" = 0, remotely? In Proximity, the only Service shows two "People" and Nearest Device is greater than 5000. However, when I "RUN" the automation, It's not changing the thermostat setting to the "Leaving" Action. Thank you. I appreciate your videos.
Hi Ed, Thanks for another great tutorial. I'm starting to use the proximity integration to build an automation when I arrive home my Garage Door will open. But I am facing a little issue, When I walk to the park that is 200m away of my home and going back, my garage door opens... So, is there any condition I can use to prevent the automation to run if I'm very close from home. One again thanks a lot for your advice Regards from Mexico!
I'm also using proximity to open my garage door. Not sure if my approach would work for you, but I've added a condition to only perform the action if the tracking device has a bluetooth connection to one of my vehicles. You have to enable BT connection on the companion app then you can find the BT ID and name in the phone entity in HA to use in the script. The value template is like this: {{ '00:00:AA:00:00:00 (My Bluetooth Device)' in state_attr('sensor.my_galaxy_phone_bluetooth_connection', 'connected_paired_devices') or '00:AA:00:00:00:00 (My Other Bluetooth Device)' in state_attr('sensor.my_galaxy_phone_bluetooth_connection', 'connected_paired_devices')}}
Does each, for example, iOS device need to have a unique naba casa login? or can I install the Home assistant companion app on each device in our family and use my same login on all of them?
Great video. But all the entities shown in the proximity integration are 'unknown' in my HA. Do that have anything to do with the fact that I am not using any remote access(clouds) to HA? 😢
@@SmartHomeJunkie Thanks so much for your video; it was really helpful! I'm considering downloading your automation from your site. Just to clarify, do I need Nabu Casa, remote access via Cloudflare, or something similar to make it work? Which option would you recommend? Is Nabu Casa the better choice?
I want to use the proximity sensor to automate my garage door based on my Tesla's location. I think before I can do that safely I need to know two things - when the car is already in the garage and the state of the garage door (open or closed) - these require hardware but that shouldn't be too complicated. One thing I didn't understand was how does HA know (accurately) where "Home" is?
One other question - how do you track individual devices using the proximity sensor when you only have 1 "Home". For example if add the Tesla location tracker to "Home" what happens if I then add myself and my partner to the proximity sensor. Does it just look for any sensor with nearest direction of travel or distance, because both these values seem to be tied to the "Home" value and not individual people or devices?
I have been using a similar setup but i just created an expanded zone around my house and controll HVAC when somebody is within this zone. The problem I have is that the approaching velocity is different, someone can be approach by car or on foot. Using one threshold doesn't work becase either you turn on the heat too early or too late. I tried to use the appraching speed sensor from the proximity integration, but that resulted in a ton of false positives as I was just driving atound the neighborhood. Ideally your want to connect ha to your navigation system and when it detects home as a destination calculates the ETA and turns on the heating or cooling accordingly.
I think you can determine the speed after a person enters the radius based on the difference in distance and time in between two measurements, but it still would not be perfect.
A great tutorial as ever! I was fooling around with geofencing, and everything works well with my own phone (a RedmiNote 10), but it doesn't work with my wife's Samsung S21. It only updates every 20 minutes or so, which is too slow to be useful. Do you have any tips?
No idea really. I use an iPhone which works well. I Also use my router as a tracking device to see if someone enters the house or leaves the house bars on if he's connected to my Wi-Fi. That is pretty accurate.
How do you cover a situation whereby the nearest device is moving further away, however there is another device within range that is moving towards but is not yet the nearest device? In this situation, you would surely want the heating to remain on - is there a way to cater for this without complex building blocks that reference each of the devices individually?
The scenarios in this video cover that. The hearing will be turned off for a short while, but in reality you wouldn't notice a temperature drop I think.
My HA experience can still be measured in days rather than weeks or months. This was/is my first automation. What I found missing in this tutorial is how to check that HA is actually seeing the device location. I do have a Cloud subscription since I can see that HA is a project worth supporting, and the HA application on my phone, and the phone about 3m away from the HA NUC, but my automation does not seem to be triggering. (I'm turning on a table lamp instead of an HVAC.) Unfortunately, I don't know yet where to look to see if HA thinks I'm "Home" or not. I can see that the automation does not think I'm home.
At 5:26 I do not have "Zone to track distance to". My Zones to ignore is not populated. I have two zones, "Home" and our building project about 30 km away.
Another reason to use the person instead of the phone is that you can change the person's tracked devices. So if you get a new phone, you just change that in the person. No need to change automations (Node-RED or native).
Absolutely! Using the person instead of the phone provides so much flexibility when it comes to changing your tracked devices. It saves you the hassle of having to update all your automations. Smart move!
Fantastic video and channel. Interestingly, this works perfectly when 'Arriving' and when 'Leaving' but fails to trigger when breaching the 5km threshold when travelling 'Towards' the house. I've tested thoroughly and it does not seem to trigger. No issues with proximity integration. Anyone else experienced similar results?
So I have a scenario in my mind that keeps coming back to me since the Proximity was revamped. How difficult would it be to build in a "speed" parameter for the devices as well? First of all, I start the high-accuracy mode (refresh every 5 sec) while within 500m of my house. Imagine this - if you are in a car, with the speed the system could figure out, if you are travelling by a car or just returning on foot - and could automatically open a gate for you.
That would be a nice addition. You can calculate the speed yourself if you wish, using an automation that determines the speed based on measuring the difference in distance within, for example, one minute. However, it might still be inaccurate when you are standing still, such as at a traffic light.
I was recently looking through my logs and noticed this. "Error initializing 'Home/Away Heating - Monday/Friday Weekdays Evenings' trigger: In 'numeric_state' condition: entity sensor.home_nearest_direction_of_travel state 'arrived' cannot be processed as a number" Any ideas on this?
Hey can you tell me how to delete a person from HOS, already deleted them from the companion app, deleted them from people and users but there phone still show up when i go to add a person. Thanks in advance
Yeah, no problem. Just add it to the conditions or create an extra condition in the action. But... Your thermostat won't turn on anyway if the temperature of your room is above the temperature that you are setting in the automation.
To me the triggers with names are too complicated. The same worked here with 2 different automations, one for raising temperature and one for lowering. As in your implementation each trigger id has a corresponding action there is no need to have all in one automation.
Tried a few weeks ago something similar, to turn on the outside lights when I get close to home (but using buildin zones). Don't know why it did not work. I even reinstalled the app so I could give it all permissions, and adjusted it to submit my GPS data every minute. Just tried to install the Proximity addon, but it won't let me, says something about the configuration.yaml file. I guess it needs to be installed through the browser instead of the app. Will try it later this week. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks @@vandorhangya That was indeed the issue. I was running the second-last version of HA. After installing the update I was able to install Proximity without any errors. Also got the lights working. When I approach home, the outside lights turn On.
I've been using zones to accomplish this, but this is much better. I've been looking for a video with this instruction; thank you. Now, I need to rewrite a few automations. One question that I’ve yet to figure out. I have two different settings for my home when I leave town for extended periods (I travel a lot) that activates when I enter/approach the airport. However, when I arrive back in town by landing at the airport, I am not entering, leaving, approaching, or departing a zone; I appear there when my telephone turns back on. How does one create an automation/trigger based on that? Anyone? Anyone?
Like another commenter, I'm getting the error that the integration cannot be installed via the UI. I tried from both Settings -> Devices and by going to the Proximity doc page and clicking 'add integration'. Running 2024.1.6 so not the absolute latest but figured new enough.
@@SmartHomeJunkie wow, whys that? Seems like give a center point, an inner diameter and an outer diameter, other than that should be the same as far as automations go I think. My location seems to drift quite a bit at times so I had to make my home zone much bigger than I’d like to keep false zone changes. I’m probably not thinking about something right though.
Home assistant has become a bit like a baby needing attention 24/7 constant care and bottle feeding, core and other updates every couple of days. I hope the child grows up soon. 😉
Not to be too sensitive, I need to say that - as a person who has lost too many dear friends and a few family to drug addiction and abuse - I hate the name "smart home junkie." I get that "junkie" is a term that's used far and wide to describe somebody that really into something, but I bet not by anybody who's paid a high price to addiction. Won't stop me from watching and learning from your stuff, but I think you deserve to know that the channel name wasn't the best possible choice. Carry on.

Agree, that would be awesome.
Well, I start the tutorial with explaining how to do that using the conpanion app and setup tracking devices to the people entity. 🤷🏼♂️
@@SmartHomeJunkie Thank you for the response. I've watched it three times so far. I'll watch it again. Perhaps I'll see it with yet another viewing.
At 5:26 I do not have "Zone to track distance to". My Zones to ignore is not populated. I have two zones, "Home" and our building project about 30 km away.
5:59 All values are "Unknown". My phone is on, GPS is enabled, HA app installed with location permissions allowed all the time.
Is your Home Assistant remotely accessible?
@@SmartHomeJunkie Sure is. I'll test it over the weekend, and monitor the traces.
Brilliant. This means i no longer need Life360 or owntracks
Great that it helps!
How do I run (2) Home Assitant computers 🖥️ two homes and use geo fencing 🤺
@@SmartHomeJunkie true. I could do it as a template sensor but then again, it would be a super nice addition. Already posted a request on GitHub 😉
I was recently looking through my logs and noticed this. "Error initializing 'Home/Away Heating - Monday/Friday Weekdays Evenings' trigger: In 'numeric_state' condition: entity sensor.home_nearest_direction_of_travel state 'arrived' cannot be processed as a number"
Any ideas on this?
Hey can you tell me how to delete a person from HOS, already deleted them from the companion app, deleted them from people and users but there phone still show up when i go to add a person. Thanks in advance
Top Video 👍👍👍
Thanks Manfred! 🙏🏻
it would be nice to add temperature condition...turn on my heater only if the temperature is below to X °C
Yeah, no problem. Just add it to the conditions or create an extra condition in the action. But... Your thermostat won't turn on anyway if the temperature of your room is above the temperature that you are setting in the automation.
If it is a thermostat, the heating won't switch on if you set the temperature higher...
Thank you. 😎
Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! Your support means the world to me.
i had no idea you could have multiple trigger ID's with the same name
Yeah, you can. Cool isn't it?
To me the triggers with names are too complicated. The same worked here with 2 different automations, one for raising temperature and one for lowering. As in your implementation each trigger id has a corresponding action there is no need to have all in one automation.
Basically I have 2 automations with each 2 triggers and one action.
Slimme automatisering! Kijken of dit ook met Node-RED kan. Denk het wel.
Mja, ik gebruik geen Node Red.
Okay, let me know if you succeeded. I'm curious what the error in your configuration.yaml is.
I've got the same error. I think the problem is only that we are on an older version of HA. Will check this later some time.
@@vandorhangya Yep, you need HA 2024.2 or higher for this to work.
Anyone? Anyone?
When you appear, the automation should detect that as well because the state changes at that moment.
Does this require the Home Assistant cloud to work?
You need remote access yes. Home Assistant Cloud is one of the options to do that.
@@SmartHomeJunkie Can you point at any other way to do that without having the Home Assistant Cloud?
@@ilMorgi88 You will need external access. Ther's multiple ways, but Home Assistant Cloud is the easiest way and you support the developers.
Like another commenter, I'm getting the error that the integration cannot be installed via the UI. I tried from both Settings -> Devices and by going to the Proximity doc page and clicking 'add integration'. Running 2024.1.6 so not the absolute latest but figured new enough.
You need 2024.2 or later for this.
I appreciate the time spent in creating this tutorial but I find the example a bit complex to implement. I am still struggling to understand it... 😞
Do I need a Home Assistant Cloud account for each user?
No, just your HA instance (server)
No, just one for your server.
Great tutorial well have to see if a can improve my am i in the pub monitoring
Hahaha, just add the pub as an ignored zone 😉
Bei HA in deutsch heißt die Integration Nähe. Nur so zur Info
What if one person arrives home (heating on) just before the other person leaves the radius (heating off)? Would the heating get lowered?
No, it stays on.
it only looks at the nearest person, right?
@@hhorstink Yup
I wish they would make zones able to have inner and outer diameters, like a donut shape.
That would be really difficult to implement imho.
@@waynenocton Ah yes, I thought you meant more of an egg shaped diameter. My mistake.
We really need polygon ability in zones
We? 🤪
Yess! That would be incredibly useful, I live in a dense city environment and the circles really don't work that well for me...
Dies everyone in your house have a Nabu Casa subscription?
Hope they survive having nabu casa
No, and you only need one subscription for your HA server. So everyone can make use of it.
@GameOver556 Whahahaha
@@SmartHomeJunkie I just add them as non-admin accounts and they can use my subscription?
@@eberger02 The subscription is for your server, not for the people on your server. Everyone on the server makes use of the same subscription.
Now I understand why you're always wearing heavy sweaters. 18° C. Brrrrr!
Hahaha! I'm the ice-king!
And rooms should never be under 16 cause it favors mold.
We keep our house at 18 degrees too @SmartHomeJunkie
@bliblabl8149 Mould is a result of high humidity and poor ventilation, not temperature.
@@daveforrester61 Yeah, it saves some energy costs.
Carry on.
I'm sorry to hear that.
