@@ItsWesSmithYo I bought B/N APC mini . . . the product froze when I pressed shift key! Now I am stuck only with option to go for this! Can I play drums with the keys? TIA
I have this set up also. It’s powerful when coupled with the Push 2. I create my elements in my House Music with the Push and can mix in the instruments with the apc40. It’s perfect for live DJing.
I've had the APC40 sitting in my studio for some time now and recently brought it out for a project. So glad I came across your channel. You've blown my mind and now Ive got a lot of rehearsing to do before the next show. Thanks. 😁
Such an excellent video dude! Well done. Like most people on here, I’ve got an APC40 mk2. I do use it, but not as much as I should! These tips will change that. The APC 40 mk2 is soooo underrated.
Good stuff! It's a pretty epic combo eh? I like having the APC 40 take care of the clips launching + mixer controls and let Push 2 be the instrument :)
@@metamindmusicofficial I wish they'd release a new revision with better colors for the pads though. And maybe a second set of send knobs. Oh well, a man can dream.
@@metamindmusicofficial ah great. Push 3 SA is not at it‘s final peak, but already a expansive device or cool instrument. Ableton has to deliver some substantial stuff (not talking about arrangement) - I hope the APC connects easily, because you don‘t have the real settings menu on standalone
Great Video! I love the set up you have. I currently am using the apc40 mk2, I also have the push 1, but havent used it yet. Do you think they would pair just as well as the push 2?
Thanks for explaining the intended functionality of the APC40 mkII with Ableton. However, I'm using it with Reaper to control a laser synth via MIDI. Not a muso, DJ, nor studio engineer, but an old school laserist fingering everything out from scratch. Didn't understand what sends are, how to set up/use multiple banks, nor how to illuminate the buttons. But so far, I've learned how to map controls and notes into Reaper, record them onto midi tracks, then playback to the laser synth. This has been very helpful in explaining what is 'supposed' to be going on. It would be very nice to get the APC40 mkii's built-in banks and button lights happening. BR😎
That's a very cool use for the APC 40!! Sends are essentially when you a signal from a track to whats called a "return" or "auxiliary" track. Usually with reverb, delay or compression on it so you can send multiple tracks to 1 effect.
Yo man, this video was sick. Been looking for something like this to go with the push 2. This is perfect. Could really do some sick performances with this set up. Thanks 🙏

Man I’ve been looking at an APC40 for a long time. I got a launchpad pro MK3 that I’m in love with. Ive wanted a push 2 for a long time but it’s always outta my price range. I’m definitely going to get an APC 40. Seems like live jamming would be much easier then going to session view on the launch pad everytime I want to launch a clip or move it to a different track. Also been interested in who others us it to DJ live shows. This is a big question but I’m wondering what I’m missing by not having a push 2 and using a launch pad pro In it’s place. I know the knobs and the slider to adjust parameters volume etc. Is there something awesome I’m missing by replacing the push 2 with a launchpad pro? These videos are awesome and thank you meta for all the information and the work it takes to put this info out there.
Push gives you extra controls (knobs) like visual device control, visual mixer control, adding tracks, devices, groups, browsing, note repeat, etc. Those things are valuable for me to take me away from the computer screen. Launchpad pro is fantastic but it needs pre setup to work fast. You can combine Push with LPP. Launchpad is focused on Ableton but can be used globally with basically anything, APC and Push are Ableton devices tighter integration.
Amazing video. Well thought out and informative. This is what I’ve been looking for. I got the push, but felt it was too much for me, the APC40 looks like it’s exactly what I’m looking for. New sub!
Hello, great tutorial ! I have a question. How did you achieved that you can play notes without actual "arming" a chanel you want to play notes within ? Is this only possible with Push ? I can not do the same when using only computer keyboard or am I missing some correct configuration and routing ? And how your Ableton knows what chanel to record from after clicking session rec. button ? Is it master chanel by default? I am trying to do the same, but nothing happen after selecting chanel to which i want to record and pressing session rec. btn. It seems that I need to explicitly hit the arm button of the specific channel ( selecting channel is not enough ). What I see in your video ,is that you skip using arm button and yet you are able to record. Can you try if it is possible with push being disconnected?
Great tutorial! Does the AKAI APC40 have the capability to give two output lines? Say one for backing tracks and another for click tracks and cues? That is for on-stage peformance?
So I can do pretty much anything I could do with a launchpad or push 2. I can do everything with the APC40. The push would be handy with the screen and features it has but, with this its not required. This can be the center of my rig. This can do it all it just does differently, and no screen etc..
the APC40 does A LOT of what the push 2 / launch can do. It does some of it better too! the only thing the APC 40 doesn't do it's "play" midi notes like an instrument (unless you use a custom script). If you don't need your controller to be a playable instrument then the APC40 is a great choice.
My push 2 was defect and no more available in stock. Would you recommend as a replacement it has everything I use the only think I don't see is pressure sensitive buttons and usage in device mode or the scale function layout
Hey I'm struggling to map the user button to make it a filter (just want al the knobs above the channels to be filter knobs) Whats best way to do this? thanks!
just wish there was a delete clip function, maybe Shift + Clip to delete it. seemed like a no brainer for me. a huge loss with that one. Mapping it with BOMEs is pretty flaky.
i know this vid is old but I have this saved in my next to buy list on amazon. i'm very picky about buying things so research alot vids before i buy anything ...even though i trust akai lol
Mostly useful for DJs: you setup tracks to be A or B from the APC's dedicated button in the mixer section (or the AB selector within each track in Ableton) , and their respective volumes will follow the position of the A-B fader.
I am trying to put a utility plug-in on each of 24 channels, then map the plug-in gain to the corresponding channel faders, bypassing the volume. When I do this The channel 9 fader does affect the utility gain on 9, but, also on channel 1. any way to avoid the double mapping? Thanks
Anyone know if it's possible to keep the default APC mapping, but change the upper limit of the volume faders? I want to able to slam the fader up and down without worrying about pushing the single too hot.
i love my APC40 the 1 to 1 thing is so nice. I have push2 working it into the setup. i need to buy new faders for the APC anyone have the hookup? i want to find the generic part # for the potentiometer sliders so i can buy a bunch cheap
I dont know if you can play notes with the pads. If you arm a synth the pads will trigger notes but theyre not really in order i think. Theyre also super low notes. You can use it to trigger samples the way an mpc does if you prevent it from looping them and you set the quantize settings on the apc to none that way ut triggers as soon as you hit the pad.
That's a good question! I'm not sure about APC40, but APC20 mk1 has the button "Note Mode", so you are able to switch to Note mode and use pads as a notes
I think you can use the 8 rightmost encoders to "bank" through more macros if you have your Audio effect rack / intrument rack selected in Ableton. You could also custom map the top encoders to macros 9-16 in "user" mode.
On a serious note though does anyone have any experience using this with maschine plus? I plugged it in to maschInes usb buss and it detected it but as far as what i can accomplish with it well im kinds unsure.
Pro TIP: By the way u DONT have to HOLD SHIFT to switch to NEXT BANK n PREV. BANK - If u press the BANK button and it is turned on then if u jus press left or right it will automaticaly switch to NEXT FULL BANK - but if u TURN OFF the BANK BUTTON then u have to HOLD SHIFT like he did in this video to switch full bank - but whtever maybe u like to sometimes do increments then SWITCH so whtever works
