  • Note: PLEASE WATCH THE ENDING MONTAGE! I HAD A BALL PUTTING THAT TOGETHER!
    This was a fun one to work on and research. I'm well aware that some will hit the comments section to tell me all the things I got wrong about berserkers in history, but please note that in doing my research, I was very careful about some of the sources. I didn't just want to use some blogspot that simped for anything viking, okay? I wanted to make sure there were actual sagas, quotes, or records to draw from before I made anything concrete.
    I also hope ya'll like that I didn't just say 'yeah they're berserkers' and actually tried to be more specific. I agree that my arguments as to why are a little weak, but I think it's still enough to build a case all the same. ;)
    All in all, this was a lot of fun, I enjoyed making this, and I am proud to have made it. Berserker is not my best hero...easily one of my worst. But this worked out well in the end.
    Don't forget to sub, like, and comment!

    This is an awesome take on berserker. I'd like to point out how well the "berserkagon as an intimidation tactic" fits in with how berserker is allot more tricky than they seem at first glance. Recovery cancels that make for more trick plays, feingting out the wazzoo, and a deflect that literally translates too "caught you!". Seems like a warrior profiting off of an opponent whos expecting to fight a bloodcrazed maniac and is instead fighting an intelligent warrior.

    As soon as you started talking about the ulfhednar my mind immidietly went to Eirik Jarl the ulfhednar jarl who once controlled major parts of the norwegian coast. Interesting historical figure for sure.

    To add to the Berserker discussion since this is one of the few things I've took most my time studying.
    Bear-serker or Ulfhednar were most likely an elite warrior of Vikingr, the fictionalized parts were most likely the unarmored fighting, the killing their team is most likely also fiction as Vikings are some of the most Tactical people of history. I personally believe the theory of Berserkers when they did their warchants and cries it was to intimidate the enemies and increase the natural drug called Adrenaline, the little we do know about Vikings is that they were highly intelligent tactical minds that rarely went into fights they thought they couldn't escape with their lives, now take that into consideration when you think of Vikings allowing Berserkers to even enter combat they are a tactical disadvantage to a fault. Natural Adrenaline can be used to explain their trance much better than drugs, psychological warfare is also a good explanation, maybe some drugs can help explain it but I feel it's less likely.
    To add again, back then the heaviest armor a Viking had was Chainmail and a little known fact because no one played back then but Berserker was the only Viking that had chainmail in their armor choices. The Berzerker feat is on Nuxia and Berserker and the effects of the Feat you messed up, it's only Speed and Damage, Fury is the one with Speed Damage and Defense. The Recognition emote where Berserker chants kill, it's Berserker recognizing you as a worthy kill someone that is worthy of their elite axe, that's just something to add. Last thing I main Berserker and you'd be surprised how Tactical and psychological you have to play to use Berserker to their fullest, and once again that's another way to connect them to real life.

      I'm gonna add this in replies since it's referring to Raider and not Berserker.
      Raider is extremely fantastical, his Dane Axe is 2 or 3 times the length of a real Dane Axe, he doesn't wear Chainmail (we had to beg for Chainmail and it's not even good), and most importantly Raider is definitely based more on the fantasy of Vikings and the Berserkers more fantastical and mythical side.

    I think the Ulfhednar actually appear in the medieval mmo "Conqueror's Blade". That game has seasonal units (units in the game are various groups of soldiers you can command in a battle, and they're either melee infantry, ranged infantry, or cavalry units) that can be unlocked and in Season 7, all of them were units based on Northmen/Vikings. The first of the three "Northlander" Units you can unlock are men known as the "Sons Of Fenrir". They wear wolf pelts on their heads, fight with an axe and a dagger, wear almost no armor, and actually behave a lot like wolves themselves when fighting (their most annoying aspect is one of their in-game abilities lets them charge and jump OVER enemy units to attack them from behind. This is particularly useful if their charging shield-wielding units and they're braced in any kind of shield-wall/phalanx formation).

  • @BobMcBobJr

    A few critiques:
    Chainmail would have been considered heavy armor during the hayday of the vikings. Platemail hadn't been invented yet so chainmail was literally the heaviest armor you could get other than maybe types of brigantine and would protect you from most strikes so saying that a berserker would wear chainmail at most is like saying a US Army scout would use a 40mm artillery gun at most.
    Dual wielding is exceedingly rare historically and basically unheard of in large scale combat. Axes are an especially bad choice for dual wielding because they are more difficult to defend with compared to weapons like the sword. When choosing arms it often depends on your armor. First off is whether you would need a shield. Historical berserkers would almost definitely use a shield. The reason is the need to protect yourself from ranged attacks. Even thrown rocks can kill you so if you are not wearing heavy armor, as berserkers do, then you need a shield. As for weapons, the vikings were definitely fans of axes but they were also fans of spears. In fact one of the sources you read describes "blood dripping from their spears" so I'd imagine they used either as their primary weapons depending on their unit's preference.
    I don't like how you described him as "not big as you'd expect from a bear warrior" implying that historical bear warriors were larger humans.
    That said, I loved you description of the mindset and the possible causes of the myth historically.

    • @RavenKnightYT
      @RavenKnightYT  2 роки тому +1

      I appreciate your points. I'd like to address a few of them though.
      Firstly, the chainmail and heavy armor thing. Yes, chainmail would probably be the heaviest armor available at the time, so not referring to it as heavy armor is a little silly considering at the time it would be heavy, that I will grant.
      I don't recall a point in the video where I said dual wielding was practical or useful. As a matter of fact, I've said in several previous videos how exceedingly unpractical it is. In fact, I believe what I said in this video was very close to what you said: "by using two axes, he is maximizing offense at the cost of defense," which goes into what you said about having no defensive capability. If I were to add onto my point, I would have said that dual wielding takes away a certain degree of control of the weapons.
      But your follow up about the shield confuses me a little. You say: "The berserkers almost certainly carried a shield." Now, according to historical sources, there's some evidence to this as there are accounts of berserkers 'biting their shields' so I'll agree on that point. But that's not your reasoning. You say: "if you're not wearing heavy armor, as berserkers do, then you need a shield." Okay....but which is it? Earlier you said berserkers had access to chain mail (heavy armor for the time) so...then by your logic...they have no need for a shield, because of the armor. But on the other hand, they would definitely need a shield if they DON'T wear chain mail........so which is it? I feel like your point kind of countered itself. That's not me being mean, I'm just trying to understand your logical conclusion here and how you got to it.
      Actually, on that note about chain mail, if all berserkers did wear chainmail, then what would be your explanation for accounts of berserkers running into battle bare chested or in minimal armor? Those accounts do exist and I'm curious if it's because some berserkers were more armored than others? Again, this is not me criticizing you. I'm just curious about your stance on that.
      And then the part about spears. No doubt. Vikings loved spears, swords, and axes. But I don't remember a part of the video where I said they exclusively used axes. :) Unless you meant I should have brought that up.
      Ooookay, and then the part where I said 'not as big as you'd expect from a bear warrior.' Consider the context by which I make that statement: I am trying to explain why I think the berserkers IN GAME are more based on the wolf warriors than the classic bear warriors. I'm not making an argument for how actual bear warriors looked in history. Bare in mind, this is the same game that made Raiders bare chested, took away Jorm's shoes, and made the dane axe look way bigger than historically accurate. This game will put appearance and cosmetics over accuracy most of the time, and BECAUSE of that, I think they leaned more on smaller lithe wolf warriors over big burly bear warriors IN THEIR OWN head canon. Not what I think was historically accurate or sound, but what they found justifiable.
      Again, no disrespect meant here. Just pointing out my reasoning for some of my points.

    As a Dane named Bjarke after the famous viking berserker Bodvar Bjarke, I am very interested in viking history, warfare and sagas.
    I know of another native plant that the vikings ate, perhaps to enduce the "bersærkergang" called "Liberty cap", commonly found all over Scandinavia. There are first hand accounts of vikings and berserkers alike eating these perhaps to gain visions or to go berserk.

    13:54 - I understand this has already been pointed out but Berserker isn't the only hero to have the level four toggle feat - "Berserker"
    Nuxia has it as well, but also Gladiator's level four Toggle feat - "Roar of the crowd" is basically the same thing just it has a different name and even though it doesn't offer as much a tack power it gives more Sprint speed and can be stacked with other boosts. (unlike Berserker which cannot)
    I don't play Berserker, heck they are the only hero in the game besides Orochi that I haven't played nor recruited yet. XD (Because I simply don't care for either of them)
    But I have used them in training mode to practice fighting against them and deeply understand their playstyles and how to counter their perks, Feats, and overall abilities. And honestly whenever I play Gladiator or Nuxia, I would rather just equipped fear itself or infection as their level four toggles. I simply just get better use out of how those other two feats work. But I personally between the two Roar of the crowd is what I prefer over Berserker.
    (More Sprint speed means you're able to Retreat to safety and heal if needed or backup and utilize projectile feeds or regain stamina more effectively and consistently but on top of that I believe it last slightly longer and you are also able to stack it with other boots and power up type feats too.)

    Okey I have theorie about this berserkergun. Never heard that name though berserkergun. I think I found a way to replicate this state of mind or at least I'm not sure if it's the same thing but it seems the same as the discribetion. It's a type of meditation I can enter by choose or sometimes get in during heavy work, exercise or anger, I don't know if it is a familie thing cause I don't know if other in my familie have it, but it feels a lot like a genetic treat cause I have always had this abilitie even as a child. I have had to learn to controlle my anger cause when I enter this state I loss all fear, abilitie to think propperly and most self controlle. Like you described when I come back down my body goes limb, and I have no energie or will power to do really anything afterwards. The time this after blow lasts for dependes on the time I spend in this state. Now okey what happens when I'm in this state, my hart beats sow heavely I can feel it's puls though out my body, I will start panting like a wild wolf and growle sow loud people can hear it from across the street, I'm filed with a primal rage that consumes me fully, I get dubble my endurence and strenght this is litteral I can lift more then half my body weight with one arm and out run a car in a resedental street, it feels like I'm litterly channeling lichtning true my vaines, I'm still full aware and keep very and I mean very little controlle over my body, sow defenitly not enough to keep me from doing things I will regret, but enough to pick targets. When I come out of it, all the damages I dealt to my body will be felt at once, did I damages my musicles then I will notice they will no longer be working, did I sprain something then it will go limb like a noedel, did I break something then I will feel the pain and my body will start to set, and the most common once are, chest pain, burste blood vesels and compleet full body fatigue. It's bassicly like I borrowed the strenght and then have to pay back afterwards. If your convinced that this is berserkergun then here is how I enter this state. First you can never give up, never let down... no no kidding this is not a big rick rol! 🤣 Now serieus. First one thing that's more important is how to come down if your going to try this. Once deep enough in this state stopping the feeding procces won't do jack sh*t at that point sow it either stops out of it's self or you have to know how to come out. There are 2 wayes to come out one is very simple the other a little harder. First the simple one aim yourself to do something you know even in this state you won't be able to, for example try to push down the house. When in this state you either achive something or go down trying litterly. Sow if you use up all your energie and become way to exausted to keep going you will slowly snap out of it. Second is the harder one you can use your eyes to come out refocus your eyes on something new that's further away and if you stop feeding it it will restart your controlle and you will come down. This one is better, but harder try it first, but if it doesn't work the other one will. Okey now the most important one how do I get in this state. I always start with hyping myself up, I turn that hype into anger, now I start focusing on the back of my head, what happens at this stage is you feel the front of your head go foggy let this happen, from this point keep feeding this feeling and don't stop otherwise it will break down again, now KEEP GOING AND LET IT TAKE OVER, GIVE AWAY CONTROLLE AND JUST F*CKING GO!!!! Okey I just did it to my self a little talking about it, but that is how this works. 😅 If your able to, try it out. It feels amazing and then when you come down it will s*ck *ss but totaly worth it.

    So about the haircut - there in no historical evidence of vikings having this haircut as a Wolf Tail. Like yeah, probably some dudes were having this haircut but BY GOD this haircut is by no means is a VIKING HAIRCUT.

    • @RavenKnightYT
      @RavenKnightYT  2 роки тому +3

      I never said it was.
      But the haircut is called a wolf tail style, which might have been a creative choice by the creative time since he's based on the wolf warriors.
      And like I said: it's a stretch, but it is still an interesting concept.

      @@RavenKnightYT I must make myself clear here - it was not a triggered response to Your video, but a message to those who may read my comment. There is a popular misconception about this haircut and I want to point out the lack of evidences for this haircut to be a part of a "Viking" culture

    The reason there called berserkers is because of the Scandinavian unit. The unit was supposed to ignore pain completely until their limbs litterally couldn’t fight anymore

    honestly i think the berserkers arent on drugs, or are possessed by anything, but i think its more of an intimidation tactic, but another theory i have, is that the berserkers act like the animals they’re “possessed” by as a form of belief

  • @strikeforce1500
    @strikeforce1500 2 роки тому

    I imagine some berserkers had some level of PTSD, sure maybe drugs were used as well, I doubt it could get to the level of 'I chop your arm off but you act like it nothing because "passion"', but it could be a hypothesis, I'm not a historian nor ane xpert on medieval war
    Edit: Maybe For Honor's Warlords are, to some level, veteran Berserkers, sure they are violent but don't go full savage mode, instead consume just enough drug to still be somewhat conscious
