Disturbing Secrets of The Appalachian Trail
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- I knew the woods of my small southern rural town like the back of my hand. I cleared dozens of trails to ride my bike, built forts with my friends, and enjoyed the best- and worst- of what nature has to offer. Being outdoorsy, hiking the Appalachian Trail was always a primary goal.
Growing into my mid-teens, I moved from a small town to a slightly bigger city in Western North Carolina, where I could finally see the mighty Appalachian trail. This trail and the surrounding areas created pivotal memories that forever changed who I am as a person. My respect and undying passion for the forest were forever solidified with my time spent in those woods...
Today, we’re taking a microscope to one of North America's- really, the world’s- most infamous hiking trails; these are the dark secrets of the Appalachian Trail…

Growing up, I went to church with someone whose husband decided to hike the Appalachian Trail and died- supposedly of eating “bad potatoes” along his journey 🤔 I have always had my doubts.
Wow, that’s so sad!
That's Hellish, I'm so sorry to hear that 😔🙏🏼❤️🕊️
Probably seeds from wild potato plant .
That’s how Chris mccandless died in Alaska from that film in to the wild . It’s very toxic
That sounds.. a little fishy!
Potatoes when sprouting carry toxins which can make you very sick if you consume enough.
I grew up as a kid in all those hills. I still take trips of anywhere from a few weeks to three months at a time. I am 62 now, never carried a weapon, never needed one. I have layed in camp and had bears walk in and around camp, stood face to face with a bear and walked with mountain lions. I have been accepted and protected by the magnificent creatures our Lord created. I am moving back to Virginia soon so I can walk through my beloved mountains again. I was born there, and when it is my time to leave this world, I pray my Lord gives me the strength to take one last walk where I can pass in peace with my animals.
Also my mom and uncle had to walk down Brown Mountain each morning to go to school. I know these stories well.
Bless you Thomas I wish you the best on your endeavers.
Mountain lions have been extirpated from the Appalachians since the early 19th century...
@@B1B904 I was with the mountain lions in the mountains of Ca.
@@thomasbranson7237 I would love to see one in a wild just as long as it wasn't attached to my back...lol
That's when you were a kid.. times have changed. We have dark labs, creating killing machines and letting them go, unattended throughout America's forest's and their murdering people and pets.
When my brother and myself trough-hiked the PCT in 2019 we went on a Side-Trail in Oregon called Bloody Run Trail. This trail was so remote it has no beaten path with 10 feet farn growing everywhere and located in a valley surrounded by mountains. The sun rised above the peaks at 10am and sunk at 5 in the day and it seems that nobody was there for years and that was the only time on trail i thought to myself, when there are cryptids or such things this is the place to search for them. Nothing happens while we marched trough the valley, but when i look back it was the only time i felled so lonely and in touch with pure nature. I can't tell you the exact location of this trail, but when you went on the PCT in Southern Oregon ask the locals and hikers about the Bloody Run Trail maybe you can find it (Its worth it!). Sorry for some grammatical problems in the comment. Greetings from Germany to all swamp people Auf Wiedersehn!!!
P.s: Thank you Swamp Dweller for providing us with all the stories and reports on National Parks and Trails.
I understood just fine! Glad you enjoyed your trip!
Amazing! I'm really wanting to escape the constant people at the moment, I live in the countryside (UK) but even here there are still so many people, we get a lot of tourists because it's by the sea and it becomes so tiring after a while. I just want to lie in a field and enjoy the sun on my face with no talking and no people staring 👀 just peace and quiet!
@@anima6035 I can totally understand that, i live in the Ruhr Valley/NRW and its the biggest City in Europe (it combines more than 30 big cities in one (30 million residents). There are people everywhere and no nature, so i went on a hiking-tour across USA and Europe to flee from that and experience a simple, existence based livestyle. I went alot to mountain-trails like the Alps, Pyreanes and scandinavian highlands (Fjäll), but if you're not into mountaineering you can still find places beside that, who are quiet and remote to let go the pressure and stress of society. And when you find such a place then go there and see how it works for you. I'm pretty sure you will like it. Goodbye and Auf Wiedersehn!!!
the sun rose above not rised
time i felt so lonely not felled so lonely
Hope this helps! Your grammar isn't that bad. keep it up!
I know. The courage we have when we were younger :)
The "sound" lines jumping up and down at the bottom of the screen are super annoying!
I remember hiking to the approach trail to springer mountain G.A , i quickly notice the thinner trails and at night groups would camp at the same shelter in groups because the shelters was one every 75 miles. I would always by pass the shelters and try to go on another 5 miles past any shelter. I would never have fire at night , never camp on the direct trail. It’s the people you truly have to worry about.
I hiked the same trail. The approach is 9.8mi one way. I grew up in Maine in the shadow of Mt. Katahdin. When I signed me and my friend John in the book that we were going to hike that trail in and out in one day the lady ranger at Amacalola state park said to me "no one ever does that" I said my friend was in the army and he knows what forced marches were about. We started looking like we were 17 years old and we finished long after dark looking like 117 years old. It was cool that day, coming back down the many ridges on the gravelly trail we were leg cramping hard. I told John if someone is coming up the trail I ain't moving out of the way, they can step aside cause I am exhausted. Probably 4 miles from the finish a guy with a large pack only hiking boots and shorts on approached us coming up the trail. We met face to face and stared into each other's eyes for a while. Finally he stepped aside and we finished long after dark.
And bears. My cousin was hiking the trail and a black bear with cubs attacked him. His right arm was severed just below the shoulder. There was enough arm left for him to use his belt as a tourniquet. Park rangers went back to the scene of the attack but they never found his arm. That happened 5 years ago. He is on full disability now.
@@JohnDavis-yz9nqI’m so sorry to hear that but at least he is still alive. I do hope you’re both doing good and are safe good thoughts and vibes sent your guys ways.

Dang! I think these stories may have actually finally cured my desire to visit the Appalachinan Trail!
If you go... take a large enough pistol, with hollow point bullets and a 10 inch knife. They say, hornet spray is better than bear spray.. it shoots a longer stream, as not to get too close to the predator. I would never, camp at one of those, lean to shelters..

@@mikeandrews1899 🤣maybe you look too local for the area predators? It is possible that any predator in the area would generally go after "weak" prey. As is common instincts.
Over 1000 people complete the Appalachian trail every year, and the trail is visited by 3 million people per year, though most are only driving to a viewpoint, or walking a short piece of pathway. To give a perspective, plenty of people do their grocery shopping every couple of days while on the trail and on foot. However there are also sections that are very remote indeed, and the trail is punishingly laborious, constant rolling ground (experienced hikers know that walking downhill at least as rough on you as uphill, and rolling ground is the hardest to cover.
The trail is a wierd place, a large part of it is literally a walk through rural farmland and even suburbs. Then some of it is wild backwoods that is full of abandoned settlers homesteads and mines. There are also plenty of more or less feral people living in the woods, mostly temporarily and in summer, but further south there are permanent dwellers. Some of them are criminals growing weed and the like, not all are friendly.
And like all places far from civilization, soaked in the violence of slaveholding America and the Genocides against the Native American people, the trail is assuredly haunted. The real question is whether you are the kind of person those restless spirts will protect, ignore, or....
Interesting.
as someone who grew up in Appalachia, I love these videos
Hellyeah the southern Appalachia right here. North Georgia and the mountains are all around me. I was born in such a beautiful area.
Yess, finally, stories about my home! The Appalachian Trails are always so beautiful and have so many legends, mysteries, and secrets. PS, I love the new intro!
As a fellow Appalachian I approve this message
It can also be deadly to people, not thoroughly prepared to hike this infamous trail.
I want to visit! I live in England but I'm fascinated. I'd heard of Appalachia before but one day a video popped up by an Appalachian woman who tells stories about the area many of which were passed onto her by her grandparents who raised her. Ever since I watched that video I can't get enough of Appalachian tales, such an interesting and mysterious part of the world.
Since your a local, what’s the legend of the skin walkers?’I’ve seen bits and pieces
Yassss.
Always happy to see more wilderness type stories uploaded. Also, I'm really digging the Swamp Dweller 24 hour radio. I leave that on all night for some spooky dreams.
Always bring a weapon just in case you run into a crazy person. People can be much more dangerous than wild animals
Let's go I'm all bogged Hogged up in the middle of the swamp when all of a sudden a notification that swamp Dweller uploaded a video and I'm in the middle of Green Swamp in North Carolina 3 tp 4 hours from the app trail on the nc side hell yeah thanks SD you make sleeping in the swamp a bit easier

That is Awesome Graditude for Mr Dweller. & he definitely deserves it. He is my first choice. Just Waiting for those notifications🤩🤩🤩💜💚.

You rock!
I have lived in that area before I moved to the NC mountains. The swamps are as wonderfully creepy as the AT!
Crazy that you mentioned Molly Larue. I didn’t actually know her but she’s a semi-distant relative, same last name as well, and she’s a common subject of conversation among the older members of the family anytime the AT is brought up. My grandparents and their brothers and sisters and stuff seem to know mii of re about it, my dad too but he doesn’t enjoy talking about it. Not aged who actually knew her or how she’s related, but if you trust word of mouth and ancestry and stuff, there is some relation. There are like a billion related Lheureux/Larues in Maine in particular though like swing a cat and you’ll hit there, but it was wild to hear her mentioned while I’m just chilling listening to scary stories lol
Thank you Swamp Dweller!!! 🌹♥️ I love listening to your stories!!!
Thank you for new video!
Hope Everyone in the swamp has a great day/night
I grew up 15 minutes from the Bell witch. I understand you probably didn’t know this, and it’s ok; but The Bell Witch is not considered Appalachian. It’s like 3/4 away from Robertson County.
Great Friday night listen! Always wanted to do the Appalachian Trail but after all I've heard of it, not happening!!!
My goal is to do it with my best friend. I'm currently not fit enough and still need to brush up on my survival skills, but I'm planning to go in the next couple years.
I’ve done several sections and I honestly think it’s a must for anyone who loves the Appalachia area. As for anywhere, there will be waking dangers but life is but a danger itself.

The last time I hiked the AT a very sweet older couple told me to be careful that there were people on the trail that were "armed and dangerous." I said to her " so am I lady, so am I."

This is a great video!!! The stories are horrible and terrifying. I’m happy for the survivors escape, hopefully they have found some peace in life.
Please get rid of the moving lines.
Rode the Blue Ridge Parkway on a bike in 1973. Camped at Linville Gorge and went to an overlook with a ranger and several other campers. We watched the Brown Mountain Lights for about half an hour. Looked a lot like traffic lights seen from a distance, but went back there the next day and only saw cliffs.
strange indeed.

Is the Appalachian forest really haunted, has cryptid sightings? Just curious
Also, invest in a satellite GPS phone. If bitten by a northeastern rattle snake, time could be of the essence, to get medical help. Or finding an injured person on the trail and need help immediately. Could fall and break a leg or ankle. Hopefully not. Like the saying goes... Shet happens!
Don't tell stranger's... where your going.
Never interact with anyone else on the trail , everyone of them could kill your ass
@@joshuadelgado9517 my grandmother is in west Virginia way off in the mountains and they would warn us about ferals when we were kids. My family has seen strange things so have I. Just never go alone and always have some protection on you. And like stated above if you hike don't ever get off trail..
I hiked a section of the Appalachian trail in 2018 by myself after some distressing time in my life. Took me 4 months. I’d heard some stories that were a little concerning but I was at a point in my life where I just didn’t care - I wanted the solitude and I’ve always been an outdoorsman. TBH I never saw anything that was scary apart from a few bear scares - and even those were fairly uneventful. I talked to literally a hundred + people in that time - none seemed shaky.. Maybe people thought I looked creepy because I didn’t shave the entire time and my clothes were generally dirty. I always kept a large Bowie knife where I could get it quickly. I also had bear spray. Maybe I got lucky or maybe these stories are just exaggerations.
They're not exaggerated, they're just rare.
Ok, get rid of the audio graph bouncing up and down on the video screen! It's a major distraction. I turned off the video and found it extremely annoying.
I started a thru hike attempt in Feb 2020 but after 67 miles had to get off trail in Haiawassi do to some bad gear choices and a bad water filter . I intended to get back then along came Covid 19 and I have not made it back to Georgia since . I hope one day to get back out there .
I don't know how you figure only a thousand people have ever completed a thru-hike when the Appalachian Comservatory says that over 21k people have. I mean we could assume that it's possible some of those people lied, since there's really no way to prove it. But we can also safely assume that there are a great many people who didn't report the completion of their hike to the conservatory.
Either way, I think it's likely closer to what they say it is than 20 times less.
I thought that estimate/statistic seemed incredibly unlikely, and I was half asleep when I heard it like there’s no fucking way in 100 years only 1000 people have done it? Bullshit.

I am really put off by the idea of serial killers being called legends.
Where did I call a serial killer a legend? I did say the details on some of these cases do cross the boundaries of truth and folklore. But I never explicitly say anyone is a legend.
You kill enough people,
they call you a conqueror!
serial killers, are very sick.. I believe their demon possessed, myself. The gruesome murder's.. they got to be possessed. Normal people, just don't d this!
They aren't legends, but there are legends about their crimes, like ghost stories.
But not them, no. They are just d-bag scum.

I guess I am a 'section hiker". I did part of the AT in Virginia back in the 80s.
I wanted to do the whole thing, but I broke my ankle in '86... Just slowly deteriorated from then on. (Sucks to peak in high school and age early. 15 surgeries since 1999!)
I've always regretted what I missed out on-- the AT being only part of it.
I see a recurring theme, killers kepy making bail so they kill again. When are we going to learn?

You also need to add... take a large caliber gun, a 10 inch knife, sharpen it before they leave home along with a few high powered LED flashlights, extra batteries and ammo. Also, a GPS satellite device. Binocular's and plenty of mosquito spray. Include the bear spray or hornet spray. Some say, hornet spray works better, has a long stream.

- when its determined they do that kind of awful stuff due to mental illness, I feel like thats even more reason to either cage them forever or execute them. That they are saying they are too broken to ever be trusted to not hurt people isn't an excuse to go easy on them to me, its a decleration that they are just human shaped savage animals and to not be fooled by their human shape and to get rid of them knowing that you put down a gross animal that just happened to coincidentally be shaped like a person.
