I think both sides are right about this. They did use exotic animals for money, and entertainment. But they also obviously care for them. He makes that clear with his willingness to lie about what happened, in an effort to convince people it was an accident.
Even in the hospital, he did everything he could to prevent the tiger from being euthanized. It almost killed him, and left him partially paralyzed, and he still protected the tiger. You don't do that for something, or someone, you don't care about.

+pustulio81 They did love the tigers so much they were like a family into the family business, you can see how they always treated them with love and respect, and even more, , it was "a thing of soul" they had a real connection, never controlled the tigers, they had a natural relationship..Why the success, If those tigers had been out in the real world no doubt some greedy human low life, had killed them in the worst inhumane way for greed! IMO Look what happened to Cecil.. Thank God nowadays we know about things like that happening, but back in the day we had no way to know and people like Siegfried and Roy were and are a blessing.

+STILLDecibel Fuck you with the "look what happened to Cecil," bullshit. Cecil the lion was a fucking terror that haunted native villagers for a very long time. The media shit storm against that dentist was unfair and, quite frankly, ridiculous. Hunting excursions like that are actually a benefit to the lion population as killing "Cecil" prevents that big bully lion from eating the cubs of other families. There is population control at work here that you obviously do not understand. No one gave two shits about Cecil until the media blew it out of proportion. Keep buying into whatever lame political agenda the media is shoving down your throat... You're a sheep.

+Drew Richards What did you expect a lion to do?. That lion only "terrorized" the villages, because that is how WE label it. Cecil, as with every lion, has no idea what "terrorize" even means. Cecil was being a lion. Nothing more, nothing less.
Keep that "terrorize" shit where it belongs. Directed toward the animals that created the concept: "humans". WE invaded THEIR home, not the other way around.

You guys say that from the safety of your professionally constructed home, in the middle of a country that has done exactly the same thing to all the natural inhabitants. If you feel so fucking strongly about the sanctity of that one lion's life (a lion you didn't even know existed until the media jumped on Walter Palmer), go live in the villages in Africa and we'll see how you feel when it kills your family, or close friends. What are those people to do? They were born into a shitty situation and don't have the means to leave? Should they just kill themselves? Just accept defeat? What if the first humans did that tens of thousands of years ago? We wouldn't be here to argue about the life of one, relatively insignificant, lion in Africa.
You people really just don't get it. Killing those lions IS a conservation effort. Not to mention the money from the hunt going to preserve and help the species, as a whole, that loses that member. I'm not a hunter and haven't even killed an animal accidentally in my car, so don't label me a murderer. But that doesn't mean I am as ignorant, misinformed, and gullible as you ridiculous people calling for my head and calling me a bad person.

The tiger attacked him, not because he was a bad animal, but because he was an unpredictable wild animal. Roy tries to romanticize the event but we all know what happened. No one is to blame. It is a risk when working with potentially dangerous animals.

I agree. Eye witness accounts differ regarding exactly when the tiger went for his neck. Some say the tiger bit his neck before he went down and some say it happened after but in all accounts everyone agrees that the tiger was attacking him before he went down. I tend to think his going down and the tiger biting him happened simultaneously and this is the reason for the confusion. I think these 2 really loved the tiger and didn't want to admit that their beloved animal almost killed one of them but that tiger was on the attack before the bite to the neck.

My husband and I were at that show. What we saw happen was nothing malicious by that tiger. He acted on instinct once Roy lost his footing and fell to the stage floor. What all big cats do: prey is down, they grab the neck and drag. However what preceded that was an unhappy big cat who was being disciplined by Roy because he began growling at Roy which was a no-no as they has raised him. Roy tapped the Tiger on his head with the microphone, then the Tiger grabbed his arm (no bite marks, no blood) as the cat's large mouth surrounded his arm. As Roy tried to yank his arm out of the Tiger's mouth, he was also hitting him on the top of the head with the microphone to get him to open his mouth off of his arm. At that point in time Roy lost his footing and slipped to the stage floor, at which time the Tiger acted on instinct and grabbed him by the neck and dragged him to the back of the stage behind the curtain.

It's clear by your comment and many others along with eye-witnesses that this man overestimated his ability to control the animal. Instinct, indeed, kicked in which is what makes predators ALWAYS predators. Dogs have been bred to serve humans for thousands of years but even they will attack a human under the right circumstances. One thing is certain; humans continue to anthropomorphize animals believing they are far more intelligent (and therefore, disciplined) than they actually are. Toddler steps on dog's tail. Dog feels pain. Dog attacks child. It's survival instinct. It doesn't happen every time. But it happens and this tiger attack was an unfortunate but perfect example of the foolishness of sentimental humans.

In most part you are right, although i have trained a lot of dogs that I would put my hand in a fire for, and can guarantee that they would never attack me. That being said I am the one taking that risk, but would never push it on someone else, especially a child (that is just dumb and careless). You have to always be cautious when dealing with animals as you should when dealing with humans. Cheers

The worth and dignity of a soul is measured by what it delights in! And delight/happiness is our highest desire.
Men have killed to have it. Kings have gone mad trying to find it. Wars have served it. Affairs have worshiped it. We all seek it.
Sadly, billions have died without discovering its secret... namely, that joy is not an it, but a He.
The Gospel is the good news that sinners can delight in a Holy God. It's the good news that all of our deepest desires are satisfied in the ONE who sent His Son to bring us to Him.
God is so valuable and so satisfying that the most loving thing he could do for us is to make Himself gloriously indispensable. He is the only being in the universe for whom self-exaltation is the highest virtue.
Therefore, God's commitment to be glorified and our goal to be satisfied are not at odds but come to simultaneous consumation in the worship of His Son... who took upon Himself the Wrath that God had towards us in our sinful disregard of Him. A wrath that could never be appeased through man-made religion.
Jesus didn't die to turn the world into a paradise, he died so that we could stop seeking paradise in the world...
Temporal things such as beauty, popularity, money, sex, racial identity, gender reassignment... can never truly satisfy. BECAUSE WE WERE MADE FOR SO MUCH MORE!
We were made to gaze intently into the Eternal Beauty of a majestic King, Father, and God... meet Jesus the Christ.
Life is hard, God is good, Glory is coming
😊... Thanks for taking the time to read this comment.

I agree with Roy's assessment. My house cat jumps on my lap and taps in the shoulder whenever my blood pressure spikes. It took me a while to figure out what he was doing, as he is not a lap cat. I finally learned my bp was spiking to stroke level. Now it is in control with meds. I know a house cat cannot be compared to a tiger, but there are animals that know about medical emergencies. Not saying this is what happened to Roy, but I can understand his belief. The tiger dragged him to his cage, as if to protect him. If he wanted to kill Roy, he would have mauled him and killed him immediately with no chance of survival.

Dogs can sniff out cancer from skin, saliva, and breath (not even debatable...Scientifically proven as there are dogs trained to specialize in this). Dogs can also sense heart problems via heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels from their incredible sense of smell.
Cats also have a highly developed sense of smell and can detect heart problems...They also have a great ability to read their owner's normal patterns and determine that something isn't right if your patterns/social interactions are off and may try to alert you in their own way.
Again, the general human condition (much to our disadvantage) is to disregard things we can't fully understand or grasp.

Something agitated that tiger while it was on stage, Roy got between it and the audience, bopped it on the nose with the mic, and then was dragged off stage by Montecore. Trying to save white tigers and lions from extinction is a load of crap. Tigers are severely inbred to come out with that coloring, and suffer all kinds of genetic defects as a result. They rarely occur in the wild. And even so, the white coloring makes it impossible for them to survive in the wild, as the orange and black stripes are natural camouflage. And inbreeding for that perfect white tiger, only a few cubs will survive. The rest are too deformed and horrible things happen to them, and they are disposed of. I really wish people would really pay attention to the behind the scenes ugliness of animal exploitation. I have no doubt that this man loves his big cats. However, I wish he loved them enough to not par-take in this horrid exploitation.

Absolutely. There is no such thing as a "rare white tiger" that needs to be saved from extinction. There is such a thing as a tiger with a genetic mutation that gives it coloring that would pretty much prevent it from surviving as a predator in the wild. People think it's "exotic" and eye catching so they breed them in captivity. Siegfried and Roy are doing nothing to help save endangered tigers and they are perpetuating the myth that wild animals can be pets. Maybe if you're a millionaire like they are, but most wild animals kept as pets end up living out their lives in tiny squalid pens.

Like a mother with a cub. What a crock. That tiger meant business. No tiger meaning to carry a cub (or human) gently would have exerted pressure enough to crush a larynx. Witnesses said when the tiger wouldn't lie down on command, Roy smacked the tiger on its nose using the microphone in his hand. Then the tiger latched onto Roy's arm. Roy tried to beat the tiger back, using the microphone and that's when the tiger lunged, grabbed him by the throat and dragged him away. There was blood everywhere. Wild animals do not belong in stage acts, in zoos, in circuses, in aquariums, in movies or on TV.

The animal briefly reverted back to its primal nature... It's instinct. There isn't anything wrong about that. It's what happened. No matter how strongly a human feels about a tiger, it is psychology and biologically unable to be domesticated. It takes massive MASSIVE amounts of time to evolve.

The animals as individuals do volunteer to be placed in particular situations, in order to teach lessons to humanity. You may not agree, but that is my experience from doing this work of communication. Where our sciences are presently does not begin to embrace the forces at work in other dimensions beyond our perceptions, so I acknowledge that what I have learned is only the tip of the iceberg (sorry about the cliche). I think you are also missing some details about these two individuals and what they are actually doing on their property. We don't have to agree, and each of us is at his or her own level of understanding at any given instant.

When you work with big cats, it's inevitable that accidents will happen. I don't blame the tiger regardless of what happened. They are still WILD animals. Now if a domesticated dog attacked, that would be inexcusable and should be put down. But a tiger, lion, or any big cat is acting purely on instinct. It's a miracle that they are well trained as they are.

I see a lot of critical comments. However, what he is saying is absolutely correct. When a tiger sees one of its own in danger, he will grab it and drag it away by the neck and drag it away from all other beings. This does not hurt other tigers but, of course, it will hurt a human being, which is much weaker and fragile than a tiger. But the tiger had no way of knowing that. He just did what was natural to him. He saw one of his own in danger and he dragged it away from all other beings.

Elizabeth Kelly - Yup. That tiger was tired of being controlled and bopped on the head by a physically inferior animal. Seigfried and Roy can’t admit it was an attack because that’s admitting the cats aren’t happy, which means what they’re doing - their whole life’s work - is morally wrong. They claim the cats are happy living in their mansion, but I think they’ll only be happy in the wild.

I can appreciate Roy Horn's defense of Mantecore's behavior (allegedly saving him during a stroke on stage). Nonetheless, Horn was left with permanent partial paralysis. So, we all need to appreciate the damage that a full-grown tiger can do to a person. If a gorilla pulls you out of an overturned vehicle, but it rips your arm off in the process, then I'd find it difficult to defend the gorilla's actions (no matter how grateful you are to that animal). Clearly, Roy Horn loved Mantecore, and all of the other animals that he performed with, but he's been left permanently disabled and he lives with chronic pain.

I propose this: In their Show, a tiger will appear 2 "give a hug" 2 Roy as it takes a bit of food from him. Now, most of us have seen Lions & Tigers in their Natural Habitat on Discovery, Nat Geo, etc. They only attack when hungry. It's graphic, vicious, ripping & tearing flesh til its prey is DEAD & the feasting begins. THAT did NOT happen in Roy's case w/Mantecore. Mantecore "latched on" & dragged Roy off stage. Why? I don't think Mantecore tried 2 kill Roy. Based on the "Natural Habitat Theory", what do you think?

+Msflamingo2008 you are wrong about the "gorgeous sanctuary". It is a dump with drugged animals and constantly dying dolphins.

You can keep calling everyone concerned about the trapped animals ignorant and crazy, but the sad facts remain. Those dolphins held at the Mirage usually die within 3 months of captivity, and they just buy more. The cats have to be treated with daily tranquilizing anti depressant medications to even just to exist in captivity. No wild animals should be in captivity, it is a horrible life sentence to prison.

It don’t matter how much he loved that tiger it’s still considered an exotic/wild animal
Animals in captivity who performs in exotic shows have been known to attack in frustration, agitation, worry, fear, anxiety or boredom ......
That tiger was annoyed by something and attacked even if it wasn’t intended to kill don’t matter what he said. It but his neck for a reason. Just be lucky he survived,

actually, now that the trainer has told the story, i don't think they
truly respected the tigers enough, the underlying fault was S&R ego,
they wanted to protect the illusion that they were the primary trainers
so they 'trained' them not to go onstage to correct the tigers when
things would go off course, they were to let S&R ad lib but the
problem was that S&R weren't handlers at all, they had no idea how
to handle them. It was a simple mistake, the tiger went off course,
instead of getting him back on course by walking him in a circle to the
proper spot, he tried to guide his body with his hand, which provoked
confusion, then he kept holding the damn mic up to the tiger asking it
what's wrong?, that's when the tiger bit his arm, starting the attack,
it wasn't an attack attack, the tiger held on, until trainer got there,
they stumbled over each other, trainer fell over tiger, Roy fell to
floor, and tiger stared at Roy, tiger didn't grab Roy until Roy started
to retreat. All the while trainer was getting ready to grab tigers
collar. So all in all, they didn't respect the tigers more than their
    own ego.

It's a very dangerous relation if a man sees a tiger as friend and gives it a name to humanize it. No matter the name , it remains a tiger. For the tiger the man is a prey and when the opportunity is favorable it attacks the man. You can't put your head on the tiger and believe that the tiger has got the same feelings.
I guess that Siegfried and Roy knew the risks. They were so successful. They are smart men. It could be that for the public they tried to present a"we are family" show with tigers.

Roy Horn did not have a stroke on stage and fall down. This tiger headed for the audience was not following protocol and Roy moved between the animal and the audience and smacked the tiger on the nose with the mic. The animal bit down on Roy's arm and the arm started bleeding. Roy was still standing, he fell b/c the animal wouldn't let go. Roy kept trying to gain control, the animal took him by the throat and dragged him off stage.

You have to respect the fact that they don't blame the animal they caged for the injuries it inflicted. When it comes down to it, thats a chance you take when you cage an animal. NEVER blame a wild animal for being wild.
