The odd irony that I discovered this incredible orchestra in lockdown and I would now travel to Frankfurt in a heartbeat to see it led by Andres Orozco-Estrada and yet can't. Thank you for your high-quality commitment to sharing the art of the composer and the artistry of the performers
Orozco-Estrada is now the principal conductor of the Houston Symphony Orchestra. And he’s just as good in Jones Hall as we was in Frankfurt (although I love recordings made with him at the podium of that orchestra, too). I hope Houston might be a little more doable.
@@terrylindsay2386 The Houston orchestra is certainly good, from what little I've heard, but I'm saddened at this move. The synergy between orchestra and conductor, combined with stunning musicianship here, I suspect may not quite be matched in Houston. I hope I'm wrong.
@Alcina Thank you for taking the time to give me this information. I had no idea of the details of his connection with Houston (obviously). His work with the Frankfurt orchestra has been brilliant - including a great Mahler 2 so Houston can expect a memorable finale. I wonder why he resigned from Vienna, also where he will go next? I do hope we see more of him online.
@Alcina Hi Alcina, And I would be number two. He is at home with just about every facet of orchestral music and with the Frankfurt orchestra, in my opinion, out -performs the Berlin ensemble - more warmth, and a feeling of youthful spontaneity with even the deepest works. The Weiner Symphoniker is brilliant but rather traditional, so I rather think there could have been a clash in the general approach to performances and interpretation. Just guessing.
By far the finest performance of this symphony that I've heard to date. In saying that, there isn't a work that I've heard from this orchestra that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed listening to.
@@MisterPathetique A million times better? Both recordings are fantastic, but I actually like the one with Orozco-Estrada a little more! I don't think the third movement here can ever be topped.
@@Failentin Of course I was exaggerating to make my point. This performance is not horrible, but I don't find it particularly good either. I don't think Orozco-Estrada has a lot of feeling for this music, and it shows right in the opening: the cellos should be leading, but here they're kinda drowned out. The third movement didn't impress me either, the melody tends to disappear because of Orozco-Estrada's random dynamic adjustments and tapered phrasing. But the worst thing to me is the general lack of energy and accent, and the flabby rhythm throughout the piece. And to be honest Orozco-Estrada is not helped by the overly compressed sonics either. I mean just compare the development section of the first movement or the very conclusion of the symphony with Honeck's performance, you'll understand what I'm talking about. Besides Honeck, I suggest you listen to Davis/Concertgebouw, Dohnányi/Cleveland, Neumann/Czech Philharmonic or even Karajan/Vienna Philharmonic. And then come back to Orozco-Estrada, you will immediately hear what's lacking in his performance. And please never assume that a performance "can't ever be topped". We can ALWAYS do better. Otherwise, why should we even bother playing this music?
I listened to this piece in the the last concert before the Covid Lockdown early this year, which is also my favourite concert in my life so far. Miss these old days.
TLDR: Bravo! I've only been had classical music in my life for maybe a litter over a decade now and mostly used Berlin Phil, Vienna Phil, and a few American orchestra as a references. But this orchestra easily one of my go-to's as of recently to listen to just for the sheer amount of energy these awesome musicians share among each other. It's something about the sound, balance, and direction of their playing that has had me hooked on them for a quite some time now.
The old #4 was the first piece of orchestral music I ever played as a high school grad. What I like about this particular orchestra is that the personnel seem to be having so much fun.
At his best, Andrés Orozco-Estrada is a top flight conductor - and he and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony are a wonderful partnership. This performance in many ways outclasses many of the performances of more "famous" orchestras - but this orchestra deserves to be considered in the same conversation as those orchestras. Many great conductors and orchestras have recorded the Dvorak 8th Symphony, but few have the combination of drama, intensity, beauty and charm. When life returns (hopefully soon), this work is an excellent one for the pair to tour with and show how magnificent this partnership is.
Personally, my favorite for this piece specifically is the performance recorded by Karajan and the Vienna Philharmonic in the 1980s, but the Frankfurt Radio Symphony always does deliver!
In many ways this is my favourite Dvorak symphony. He's reached his mature style in his most personally expressive way. He's freed himself from "Brahmsianisms" here. Just pure Dvorak..
The second movement is remarkable. I love the flexibility of tempo between the simple flute motto (pushing forward) and the clarinet duet (lingering). These musicians have made my quarantine.
Yes, I've heard this symphony a million time and this immediatelly caught my attention! I've never heard it performed like that, which is strange, because it sounds so natural and logical.

It would seem this Colombian fellow works with different music scores: Under his conducting, I can hear melodic lines of different instruments that I can not distinghish or hear with any other conductors. ¡Bravo!
I have performed this piece several times on 1st Horn - including with the Vienna Symphony (not the Philharmonic! :-) ) I really like this performance and yes, the conductor finds details that are often lost in the cascades of sound.
Agreed: This is the loveliest rendition of this solo that I've ever heard. He has matched his vibrato and bowing and phrasing perfectly to the needs of that musical moment. Refined, yet lush. I'd love to hear much more of his playing.
Always have to chuckle at the beginning of the third movement because of how often it's used in Twoset's videos XD. Wonderful and capturing performance!!! Love the tension in the first movement.
@@MisterPathetique I've compared the two, over two days, and I believe you're right. Honeck is less athletic on the podium, but he gets the depth in the energy of the piece - i.e. exciting but not superficial - in a way which I don't think Orozco-Estrada quite does; though it remains a pleasing performance, and Estrada is still quite young and has room to develop.

Einfach wunderbar!
The concert performances of the last 3 Dvorak Symphonies led by A O-E and the FRS are, imo, in the same class as those led by George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra recorded in the late 1950's and Istvan Kertesz and the LSO. Before he left Frankfurt I wish he had led a performance of the Dvorak 6th. Similarly I hope he leads performances of the Brahms Serenade #1 and the Schumann Symphonies during his tenure in Cologne. These concert videos are uniformly of the highest quality with superb ensemble playing and never a sign of the jaded playing which seems to infect so many supposedly top-notch orchestras. I always look forward to A O-Es returns to Frankfurt!
Dvorak's melody is full of nostalgia and comfort . These performers and a prestigious conductor express Dvorak's aesthetics skillfully . Dvorak's work has a strong spirit , And Dvorak has an indomitable soul to confront his own misery . May I please enlist the help of a German music-lover, and a lover too of this wonderful orchestra? In the UK I am constantly amazed by the beauty and skill of this orchestra... my question is... amongst German orchestras is the HR Symphony Orchestra given the full status and appreciation by the musical public that it deserves? I really would like to know... my thanks in advance.
When I studied Bassoon in Germany about 11 years ago HR wasn't considered one of the "high status" big orchestras where I was. Sure, being a radio orchestra in Germany is and has always been a big deal, but at my College all light was on Berlin Phil, Bayrische Rundfunk, NDR Hamburg, and maybe WDR cologne and Munich Phil. I haven't been back to Germany for a very long time, but the recordings they put on UA-cam are held in the highest regard by many musicians here in Sweden. Not only the orchestra and conductor, of course, but also the production as a whole. Sound quality. Video. Everything. We played Beethoven's 4th symphony recently and I used HRs recording while preparing my part. Their musicality and spirit is, dare I say in these times, contagious.
@@LinusBerglund Dear Sir, thank you so much for your very charming and informative reply... it is much appreciated. And from a professional musician as well... you expressed what I had thought, but I am so overwhelmed by this orchestra... thankfully I have seen and heard all the great orchestras you mention across the years, and I see the HR orchestra as equal to their standing. I cannot wait for the virus to go, so I can go from London here to Frankfurt to hear them. Again thank you for your very nice reply, written in very elegant English.

All her solos were magnificent! Dvořàk surely wrote beautifully and often powerfully, with lots of surprises for anyone listening for the first time!
Wonderful, standout solos.😍😍😍
That you for your wonderful videos. I am enjoying them with my grade school students, as we are studying Dvorak.
so glad I found this channel!
Me too. Been watching for hours all day.
I love how much fun he has in M3. It's one of my favorite scherzo movements ever!

Oh my favorite concertmaster! love his solo 14:26 with him the orchestra has another energy.
Thank you so much for your kind words!🙏😃💚
@P1xlz Thank you so much for your kind words!!🙏🙏☺️

Agreed: This is the loveliest rendition of this solo that I've ever heard. He has matched his vibrato and bowing and phrasing perfectly to the needs of that musical moment. Refined, yet lush. I'd love to hear much more of his playing.
A wonderful listening experience - thank you
Wow, I love the interpretation of the longer descending notes from 22:48 compared with from 22:53 .... pure beauty!❤
Always have to chuckle at the beginning of the third movement because of how often it's used in Twoset's videos XD.
Wonderful and capturing performance!!! Love the tension in the first movement.
There is no better performance of this piece...brilliant!
Manfred Honeck performed it with the SAME orchestra and it's literally a million times better. Check it out, it's also on UA-cam.
@@RobertJonesWightpaint I wholly agree with your analysis.

Thank you for such an excellent performance!
I love the second clarinet player, he is so into the music! as it should be!
Wow - great performance and brilliant sound recording. Most UA-cam performances have poor sound quality but this one stood out. Bravo!
Finally nobody is caughing since there is barely an audience!
They have face nask. Next time (when we are in the "old) (???) Situation all audiance must wear face-mask. (Lol or no lol?) to listen better to the full value of the music.
It'really true, but performers love audience because it gives them energy, fire and even inspiration to play "with life".
@@eduardoxavier7878 Yeah for sure. That whole "pandemic" is a farce and I feel for all the artists that suffer under the sanctions.

A charming symphony wonderfully performed. I almost forget Covid. Thanks a lot
Amazing quality, both video and audio! I have never heard another dvorak 8 as crisp as this!
6:59 Gut strings!? You gotta love to see it, especially in a modern orchestra!
I didn't even notice. Thanks for the information.
Awesome ending, i love Dvorak.
30:14 this flute solo is quite bears quite a delicate and jovial melody; I admire this section most out of the symphony
0:19 begins | 4:22 repeat intro | 7:16 heroic section | 10:41 2nd movement | 21:38 3rd movement |
27:46 4th movement (green ranger) | 37:45 ending
HRSO and Orozco-Estrada never disappoint
Dvorak's melody is full of nostalgia and comfort .
These performers and a prestigious conductor express Dvorak's aesthetics skillfully .
Dvorak's work has a strong spirit ,
And Dvorak has an indomitable soul to confront his own misery .
Dvorak is great and effulgent

Thank-you so much to your comments
We know the situations of the UK on the TV
Hang in there !
Be on the alert for Covid - 19
The season of blooming cherry blossoms has come again in Japan .
This season is marvellous , glorious and beyond your imagination for the cherry blossoms in full bloom everywhere in Japan , (parks , hills , mountains , on the banks of rivers , various gardens , domestic Bonsai
and etc. )
However ,
for the second year in a row ,
just like last year , when we felt lonely to prevent Covid - 19
the banquets in famous public parks under the cherry blossoms in full bloom have been perfectly banned ,
The Rite of Spring peculiar to Japan from 1000years ago can no longer be held .
We are very lonely and unfortunate .
This year too , the cherry blossoms are destined to fall lonely in front of us .
The true cherry - blossoms viewing , shortly speaking ,
the true banquet under the cherry blossoms in full bloom is to lay rugs under the cherry blossoms in full bloom and sing and dance with eating various Bento and drinking Japanese sake , beer , Japanese shochu , wine ,etc .
The number of the infected people is gradually decreasing ,
Be on the alert for Covid - 19
Cheer up !
Someday please visit Japan
distinguished Four Seasons and Japanese delicious foods wait for you
Good luck !
Love the end of the second movement. Like a weight being lifted off your shoulders.
Simplemente hermoso :')
Joyous! Bravo. 15:38

Wonderful Symphony~♡
Excelente Gracias
Muy pulcra la interpretación. Me encantó
thank you for the music :)
I think the concert hall reflects their sound better than ever before :) I checked my ear buds cause I never heard this kinda record quality Lols
Concertmaster and Flautista are rock stars.
Well, this was a definite surprise.
Super !!
I preach them but haven't heard anyone talk about them. Andres Orozco Estrada will be the head conductor at Vienna Philharmonic next year on 2021 though.
@@awakenedbahamut2574 Dear Sir I believe he is going to take over the Vienna Symphony orchestra, not the Vienna Philharmonic. But no matter..... his influence will further elevate the standing of this fine orchestra in Vienna.
