If you can source waste oil or fat from the fast food industry or other sectors, it's very economical to make your own Diesel fuel - sometimes referred to as Bio-diesel, depending on the origin of the raw materials. You will of course require some equipment and purchasing of other chemicals, but overall the fuel is very cheap to make.
Planting and tilling is necessary activity. If we want to eat our own food, it’s the most important activity. So never boring. Thanks Nathan - great looking garden.
Is it just me that loves the sound of the vehicles going up and down the gravel driveway? I find the channel one of the most relaxing to watch. I don't know how many UK watchers you have but I am an avid one! Keep up the good work.
My Papaw used to plant 100 tomato plants till the Doctor told him he'd better plant a smaller garden. Yep, you may have guessed that he still planted 100 plan ts but planted them closer! He is gone now but I learned a lot from him. Greg
If that were my excavator, I might looking into welding some brackets onto my front roll bars and get a steel screen made to fit it that I could take on and off. My goal being to try and protect myself from any flying debris from my brush cutter. It never ceases to amaze me the weird angles they throw stuff back at you.
Excellent even got to see tripod & camera take a dirt dive glad it was soft till. Looking forward to the Kato unleashing the hounds on that brush with the new cutter. Have a safe Memorial 🇺🇸🤠🙏
I really enjoy the videos where the farming takes center stage and sawmilling takes a backseat. I think you give us a good balance of both of the major components to your work.
Call for diesel before you run dry and work from the small tanks until they deliver. Then let them fill up the small tanks while they are there. A 500 gallon gravity tank on a stand would be perfect for you.
Had a programming class where if one becomes bogged down at work, stop, grab a cup of coffee and take a break. That was the correct answer on the test.
For the stuck PTO shaft, I pull the 2 halves apart every time when I get done. When I get ready to use the implement again, I just put some grease on it. If the 2 halves are separated, they can't get stuck together. Thanks for the video
Nathan, I’d wait until you have your equipment shed. Then get the biggest fuel tank you can justify, refuel it yourself with your transfer tank, that way, you can still use the refuelling service, but not necessarily rely on them. Love the videos, thanks for posting, you’re definitely one of the channels I keep on high rotation.
Well I have been watching you now for quiet a few years and never get sick of doing so. As for the PTO Shaft You need some old fashioned GREASE that should fix it.
I enjoyed seeing how you set up your garden Nathan. We like to freeze cherry tomatoes off the vine whole, then roast them in the oven year round to put on salads, BLTs, in sauces, etc. They will keep in the freezer for at least a year. They add such a bright flavor to meals in the winter.
use anti-seize like they put on bolts. Some call it never seize. When the wood shaving decompose the will make the soil acidic. So you need to add lime around the tomato plants to get the ph above 7.
Good afternoon Nathan. You were at one of my favorite places to shop, Broadwater Trading. They love to see me coming for that is where I buy my chicken feed and the dirt and compost for my garden and flower beds. Charlie and his guys are good to deal with.
I know this is a little off topic but I wanted to let you know that I received my suspenders from Killinger about two weeks ago. Yes sir that right there is fine workmanship and excellent quality materials. Thank you for recommending them. “Hanging in there” in the great state of Idaho. Be well. Joe
If anybody is wondering that audiobook was from the novel Lonesome Dove. I've been watching your videos since the beginning. Wonderful job, Sir. I have to say, the one thing the videos do, is make me homesick for Tennessee. 😎
@@OutoftheWoods0623 It definitely has more detail and dimension than the movie. It's just like the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom novel compared to the movie. There's always little extra things. In the book you have Short-Round fishing for sunfish and whatnot of his day before driving the car outside to whisk Indy away to safety.. not in the film. In the the movie he's just there and you have no clue as to what he did during the day or how he feels about anything. He's just some child driving a car. 🤣
Afternoon Nathan I've had my pto drive shaft seize also, mostly on the bush hog mower in real heavy stuff, found it help by changing the pto lever to wheels instead of engine (if your tractor will do that) and when I back up it would help to loosen the shaft, New shafts when you cut them to size need to also bevel the inside and outside to eliminate burrs and use Graphite, anti seize Ams oil or just good red grease when putting back together. Great looking garden, wast that craft paper you placed down? Show is never boring I learn new stuff from you. Have a great week! John
Nice tight growth rings in that pine. The one on the far right will have quit a few knots in it also but will still make some nice lumber. Put grease on the male part of the PTO shaft.
Nathan, I grew up on a ranch here in South Texas, in addition to the assortment of tractors we had 2 bulldozers, a D-8 and D-9 Caterpillars. So when we needed fuel, we needed a lot. We had a 5000 gallon tank st our implement barn and a 500 gallon trailer mounted tank for taking it into the pastures. You might be better served getting a trailer mounted tank to service your various implements.
A wise man told me a long time ago... "Son, when you plant your garden, plant 3 times what you think you'll need. 1/3 for yourself. 1/3 to share. 1/3 for the birds!!😅
My grandmother used to say something similar, and I just took it at face value until grandpa pulled me aside one day to explain about the birds. When she spoke of them, she referred to friends living in town that didn't have room for a garden, no kids or grandkids around to help, so she had plenty to share with them. Let me explain about her 'little' garden. It was like a double Amish kitchen garden of four acres planted mostly by hand. Fortunately, she had old friends that would come by to till whatever land she needed turned, I'd collect fishing worms and then the planting stated. There were times I got so sick planting in the spring, weeding till harvest then picking and bagging [reusing paper bags from Piggy Wiggly] zucchini, tomatoes. squash, etc. We'd put them all in her old Rambler wagon and off to town we drove several times to distribute veggies and get more used bags as there were never enough on hand. My mind changed though when we started picking green beans because not many of those were given away or went to waste with me around. I love me some green beans! It was canning time along with the recipe trading! All that from your three-line gardening reminder and great memories of grandma! Thanks so much!
You should look into starting your own fuel delivery service. If the locals are unreliable, then ‘Out of the Woods Fuel Delivery Service’ seems like a logical next step!
It looks like a pretty good start to your garden Nathan. It will be interesting to watch as the plot develops as you add to it. Never boring mate, 'I can watch other people work all day'. Good video to watch thanks. Cheers, Don from South Australia.
Nathan, I have no experience But the PTO shaft "seizing" as it does, may be due to a vacuum lock situation. Maybe, drilling an air hole in the outer, spline tube, at the end near the universal joint will help. That would allow air to enter the tube, as you pull the two apart. 😁✌🖖
When planting your tomatoes, keep i mind the kind that your wife loves to can and make sure that you have a large abundance of that variety and then go for the eating ones that you like. Simple as that. Heirloom's have some real fun varieties!!!
As far as your PTO shaft sliding joint binding goes, we used to use lanolin grease on most sliding couplers. If they bind up, a quick warm up with a blow torch always worked. A battery heat gun will do the job now. A downside of lanolin is that, as a natural oil, it's quite temperature sensitive and gets stiff at anything below 16C. Edit: Your new brushcutter sounds interesting as it spins up.
I dont leave my pto's together on anything...happened to me several times so I dont leave them together any more. I use the ATF from the sawmill to lube it when I pit them together.
Im old enough to remember when diesel was the cheapest fuel I had a friend who owned a several dump trucks for his sand/gravel business and he had the state contract for plowing. He had a diesel pickup that he often left running in his driveway at night in case something came up hed have to head out instantly to address.
Looking good around there Nathan, enjoyed seeing you set up your garden and start planting. Good luck with a big harvest hopefully. Yes sir, if there's an empty space then park something in it that's easily moved out and in. Going to have a good time staring the training down by the creek. Have fun and we will see it in the next video. Fred.
Nathan, I think ( "I think") it's about time for a 200 Gallon, on site, diesel tank, with delivery. It will save you, now and in the future, a lot of time and fuel, running back and forth, to fill your little tanks. You have a lot of and will, no doubt, get more diesel equipment.😁✌🖖
Yeah, you some never sees and paint it on there and maybe a little grease would help you. We always grease ours, but we’re typical farmers with grease everything.
I have( 2) 100 gal tanks 1 for gas 1 for diesel. When I go to town and fill up my gas truck I take 4 5gal cans with me 2 diesel, 2 gas. It cost the first time you get both tanks filled. But after you get your main tanks filled. See what fuel you use the most. Then just keep an eye on your level. Since I go to town often. I use gas more. Now I don't have a fuel delivery and this saves me money. My 100 gal tanks cost about 4-500 I got one from rural king the other from Bains. Hand operated pumps tractor supply about 150 each. So far it's been very handy. And since I go to town anyway and fill . For me its no time at all . I use those battery operated pumps from harbor freight about 10.00. Well hope this helps out for you. From the west coast of Tennessee have a nice day.
Heck! This was a great video. The world or yourselves needs every tomato, cuke, bean, etc. etc. Thank you. In a couple of years when the price of potatoes goes up, for reasons unknown, well, if you are so inclined, put in some potato hills too.
In a few years the color of your soil will change it will darken and get better with the addition of all the chips and compost your garden Will be better three years from now than it is now how do you plan on fertilizing that is just about the perfect size garden
I've had great luck using Rust Patrol as a lubricant/protectant on outdoor metal stuff - like the quick connect handles on my tractor's loader. They slide almost too easily now - when I'm changing attachments, sometimes the handles will start to close themselves before I'm ready for them to! It's a little pricey, but it works really well. Take care and God Bless.
have you seen the 500 gallon fuel trailers? you could take it to a local supplier and maybe get a bulk discount. there are several brands, don’t know if there would be any local to you
I don't know how much your vegetables are up in the Northeast Tennessee but mine here in Jacksonville Florida is $6 for tomatoes $6 for bell peppers and $6 for cucumber plant

When our PTO shafts get locked up like that.We use free on.I guess you could use anything that makes it really cold

Absolutely!

PTO shafts need to be oiled , WD40 on the tube and grease on the input and output splines
Thought you were doing raised beds for the garden…

It was exciting🕑! The world would be a better place if we all worked like you.
Excellent even got to see tripod & camera take a dirt dive glad it was soft till. Looking forward to the Kato unleashing the hounds on that brush with the new cutter. Have a safe Memorial 🇺🇸🤠🙏
Showing what a real homesteader has to do to keep the property up. Stay safe.
I really enjoy the videos where the farming takes center stage and sawmilling takes a backseat. I think you give us a good balance of both of the major components to your work.
Thank you for the Banjo. It makes me feel like I'm back in Sale Creek Tennessee sittin' on the front porch listenin' to uncle Frank Hodge.
Call for diesel before you run dry and work from the small tanks until they deliver. Then let them fill up the small tanks while they are there. A 500 gallon gravity tank on a stand would be perfect for you.
you can plant sunflower in the cucumber hill - the sunflowers are the supports for cucumber
Had a programming class where if one becomes bogged down at work, stop, grab a cup of coffee and take a break. That was the correct answer on the test.
2:04 here in Switzerland the price for the same amount of diesel hier would have been USD 630, not 290, quite a huge difference.
indeed

That little Bobcat gettin it done!
I like that tank. Everything is tucked in out of the way and you can load and unload with your forks. Cool video. 👍❤️
Nathan, I’d wait until you have your equipment shed. I’m always amazed at how much I learn from watching this channel. Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the number of chores required on a farm daily?
Daily! 👍👍👍
@@OutoftheWoods0623 I commend you because you seem like always take everything in stride.

The sawmill and farm are going to keep you really busy this summer. Can't wait to see how your garden turns out.
hi there good show , garden looks good best to all john
White lithium grease.

The Bondioli-Pavesi style drive-lines are needing greased regularly ( almost far too often ) , unless the inner profile has the rilsan coating on it .
Use some gold antiseeze on the shaft. Clean it good before applying it.
the grease gums up in the PTO shafts and sticks. I try to keep it as grease free as possible. Light coat of oil works well.

On my PTO shafts I always bevel the edges and use a thin layer of anti seize on the shafts. I remove the shafts every winter and clean them.
Great tip!
You sure are a busy guy, I love to follow you around your property doing various jobs, RB, Nova Scotia.
If anybody is wondering that audiobook was from the novel Lonesome Dove. I've been watching your videos since the beginning. Wonderful job, Sir. I have to say, the one thing the videos do, is make me homesick for Tennessee. 😎

I knew it was Lonesome Dove immediately. Janie , the runaway, was talking to Rosco in the woods.

I use good old plain grease on my ptos. And lots of it.

13;39... OUCH!!! 15:58 You could get some small gauge rebar to stiffen those light-weight posts.
Those slots in the bottom of your tank, we call them fork pockets.
You should get a "farm tank " and have your fuel delivered.
500 gallon for starters probably.
Nice tight growth rings in that pine. The one on the far right will have quit a few knots in it also but will still make some nice lumber. Put grease on the male part of the PTO shaft.
I was an Amzoil salesman 40 years ago, it has lasted the test of time on the market.
It’s always exciting when we get to go for a camera ride.
Thanks!
Here in Ireland we use Greace on the PTO
Looks like the Elliot family is going to eat really well this summer.
Use red grease spray for that drive shaft.
I just use whatever grease I have in the grease gun. grease lasts longer than any spray on gunk.
