Beautiful work. This really resonated with me.
When I was in my 20’s I was a huge sneaker head and avid fixed gear biker. I blew probably a months work on a carbon fiber bicycle. Cost me about $1300 bucks and it was the most expensive thing I had ever owned. As I got older I stopped rocking my colorful sneaker collection and hardly rode my bike. It actually became a burden storing all these sneakers and this bike I didn’t use.
One day I had a moment of clarity. I was broke and could barely pay my rent but I had all this expensive meaningless shit around. I realized that all that shit I was holding onto was actually holding me back in life. My reasoning was this… I held onto these things because I was afraid I’d never be able to afford it again. I let these things dictate my position and wealth in life.
Long story long, I sold everything and let go of the fear of being broke or failing. That’s what this image you’ve created says to me. I know you made it for a different reason but it’s symbolic of this epiphany I had in my 20’s and I was compelled to share.
Ralph Gibson calls the photographic journey “a compression of time”. I believe that’s what you’ve done here. From the moment this shoe was created to the print on your wall. Great work brother!

Incredible!!! This resonated with me because I had a pair of rare dunks. I searched, saved and never wore them. 1st time I did, my newborn daughter had an “accident” while I was holding her and it ruined my shoe. There was no anger or frustration. Just relief. That was a pivotal time and this photo reminds me of that.

Loving it! Thanks for the journey, Mike. I was diggin' the syncopation with the music and quick transitions during the print processing part of the video - very cool. I'm glad you took the dive into PP. Matt has made three PP prints for me each @ 30x40 for an exhibit I'm building. Expensive. But I already sold one (they can't have it until after the show). The collector who purchased it said, "You just don't see this kind of work anymore." Timeless!

@@MikeGrayFilm You're welcome sir. I was going to say why. I tried to speak and I could not. Yeah on it's own it's a shoe but its the spirit that gives life. Put technology at the service of spirit and you create goodness and a sense that life is bigger than what's going on, on the surface of things. And more than technology, the community of others in this video production warms the soul. I'll shut up now before I make fool of myself.

  • @brn8045

Absolut fantastic Picture. The Detail on the fabric feels just like reallife, like you can actually touch the print and feel the leather upper.
Thats just a totally personal thing (and im not a real sneakerhead and mad because you destroyed a shoe or whatever) but if the shoe would be destroeyed, because you played in them and the sole got ripped in half, it would make more sense to me.
Idk how to describe it. Its more like using them instead of destroying them just for the pure reason to destroy them. Maybe you just had another idea in mind. To let loose of this unreal price and possession of yours. Maybe i would have executed it in a diffrent way.
Dont get me wrong, i really like the picture and your work.
If I had done it it would never be close to that great piece of art. Just sharing my thoughts.
I once heard "if you get someone to look at your photo for more than 10 seconds, its a good photo"
And you did that to me.

Consumerism means *Nothing* from 1990-2022+ will survive even 70 years because everything is disposable, especially tech. So being able to preserve something physically is more of a statement than documenting it. We have millions of photos but no physical objects.
