    Such a good module. A Swiss Army knife that is worth paying for the ink cartridge to print out the manual. Plus/minus, they update this thing with powerful new features all the time (I think I bought it with 4.12 and now they are up to 4.25) so you will be printing often.

    I wonder if I could use the Disting as a Lustmord machine. Load the memory card with some industrial sounds I record with a field recorder, then run that sound from Disting into my other modules (especially Clouds for some granular action). I think I may need this module...

    I think the reason LED's are not used very often for audio jacks is because Expert Sleepers is achieving this by using a small SMD LED mounted on the PCB just underneath the audio jack that is mounted horizontal on the PCB. So the LED shines into the side of this type of audio jack that uses translucent plastic. This is why the light appears more intense on the left side of the jack.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  6 років тому +1

      retoided I didn’t notice it but I’d still prefer that to an opaque jack. It’s just a great way to figure out “bugs” in a patch

      I really don't care how pretty it is... I just want the information. Considering how minimalistic the interface is, it's a great help. I'm just getting started in modular and looking for bang-for-the-buck. Plus, with this, I can determine which kind of modules are best suited for my own personal needs. Anything that I use all the time on the Disting is probably a worthy investment in a dedicated module.

    • @trevorllewellyn6533

      Expert Sleepers invented the tech behind the lights so it might be patented.

    • @chemicalBR0
      @chemicalBR0 5 років тому

      the problem with the design is that the types of jacks used are lets face it absolute garbage, you only have to look at a patch cable the wrong way and it falls out of the disting. (I have 2 mk4's and both suffer this problem and I have heard other people complain about it saying it's been like that since Mk2 so it's not just a faulty batch of jacks)
      if you actually look at the jacks on the pcb it's clear to see they are cheap plastic rubbish that barely hold the tip of a patch cable.
      www.muffwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1617038 (thread from way back in Mk1 days so it's not a new problem)
      I have even considered desoldering the jacks and replacing them with something a bit better quality (I'd be willing to sacrifice the lights for a better quality jack tbh.)
      it's an amazing module but this is it's only downside for me.
      I'm willing to bet that most companies don't do it because the quality of plastic jacks required for the effect is terrible and they simply won't put a plastic jack on their module.
      the only other modules I've seen plastic jacks on are Doepfer stuff. (but even the plastic ones they use are not as bad as on the disting)

    I was wondering how this thing worked as I just got a semi-modular synth that uses Hz/V and a Disting is the second most recommended module behind an English Tear. Being new to the modular side, I was under the impression knobs and inputs\outputs were single purpose, so pictures of the mk4 not hooked up or turned on raised many questions 😂

      The disting EX of course. It packs two of these into one, side by side screens no scrolling. As well as a single mode where instead of two mk4s you have one more powerful toolset. It absolutely indispensable for me, I have a couple now. If anyone is thinking about buying these modules, just download the PDF manual to see the exhaustive list of features and see if they satisfy.

      @Jesslayc Місяць тому

      @@SomeOne-pd6vm I ended up getting a disting as my first expansion module. Could not figure out how to really get it to do what I wanted it to do. I ended up spending way more money on more modules and the other 2 moog semi modular units. Now the 3 moog units are in a 4 tier rack kit with a top rack full of miscellaneous modules. The disting would be a great option for someone who understands the deeper mechanics of euro rack better than myself, which is a pretty low bar tbh. However, the doepfer summing mixer, cal synth typhoon and the Pico DSP have since become my must have modules for the moog units.

    This must simply be the single best module in existence, relative to its price. I'm absolutely getting one.
    I think what is missing is the ability to directly control it with a computer? It'd be awesome if you could plug a USB cable into it and have a proper GUI interface on a computer to control it.

    Hi, I have been struggling to organize and format correctly the sd card. Do you know of any pre formate’s cards for the disting or anyone that would be wlling to share the contents of their card already setup for quantization and all the other functions that need the sd card? I hardly use the disting because it is not intelligible to me. I wrote to expert sleepers and they just said ‘read the manual”. I don’t understand the manual😀

    Great video! Are audio files recorded with the audio record algorithm usable with the audio playback algorithm? If so are they immediately available to that algorithm to or do you have to eject the SD card and move them manually and add them to a playlist with a computer?

    • @loopop
      @loopop  6 років тому +1

      I didn’t read the manual on that part but my guess is that yes you will need to create a new playlist

    • @ChuckLeone
      @ChuckLeone 6 років тому +1

      I found the manual and it doesn't address this in particular but it does say that audio files used for playback must be listed in a playlist text file so I can only assume that users would need to do that manually. I'm guessing the record audio algorithm was written with recording performances in mind which you may not want to use for the majority of the audio playback modes. Perhaps a future update or new algorithm could offer a "sampler" mode that generates a new (or updates a existing) playlist after you record bypassing the need to manage things manually.

      The Disting can save 64 presets, which saves the algo and all parameters. But I'm gonna copy from the manual for further explanation about preset 0:
      Preset 0, the first slot, is special:
      • The contents of preset 0 are loaded at power-up.
      • When switching algorithm, the new algorithm state is saved to preset 0.*
      Therefore if you want to save the disting's state so it powers up as it is currently, you can manually
      save to preset 0, which is “click, turn, click, click” on the encoder.
      Preset 0 is also an exception to the above comment regarding favourites. The actual favourites slot
      is stored.
      *The thinking here is that if you forget to save your preset before turning off the power, at least the disting will come
      back up in the same algorithm next time you start.

  • @averagepainter

    the reason why i still hesitate with these and many other modules is the ever growing trend of putting twelve billion functions on one knob and expecting ppl who have a large number of modules to remember those.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  5 років тому +2

      you're right - it's impossible to remember. I think the idea is to give you the option to have the module you need in case there's a missing piece in a particular setup, but yeah, it's impossible to remember by heart without referencing the manual. a better solution is an app called "Modes" which has all the algorithms quickly available. not ideal though of course.
