Ah Blightown, everyone’s favorite place. I’d love to hear everyone’s stories through Blightown for the first time, so here’s mine. As I mentioned in a comment in the Gaping Dragon vid, I bought the Crystal weapon and absolutely destroyed the dragon, thinking the game was gonna be easy now. But then I went into Blightown, my weapon broke for good forcing me to use a 30 dph dealing toothpick, kept getting lost because I was blind to the ladders of the area, and had no blooming moss clumps. After a couple days and a nervous breakdown later, I made it to the bottom of the swamp with a sliver of health, only to be jumped by Mildred before finding the bonfire and having to do it all over again. But when I finally made it to the bonfire, I killed and summoned Mildred and she destroyed Quelagg on my first try in 30 sec. Fun times, Blightown, fun times…
Mine was actually pretty recent, but I knew I was in for a rough time so I came prepared. I was running my tank/quality knight build, with dragon crest shield and black knight sword. I also took the back way through New Londo via the master key, partially because it was faster and also because I'd been farming the blue drakes early and was pretty comfortable there.
The doodooheads, as I like to call them, gave me a bit of trouble, but I was undefeated until I took a tumble off one of those branch paths to the top bonfire... Which I had missed first time around. Had to use a map to see where I was going, but all in all it went pretty smoothly. I still haven't beaten the gaping dragon, so I guess I went a bit early, but I wanted to do Sen's Fortress and this was the quickest way.
I'm a monster hunter vet with about 4k hours over a lot of the older games and world, so I was pretty confident in my dueling skills. All in all, quelag went down pretty darn quick. I used Maneater Mildred like a felyne companion (aka bait) to keep the heat (ha ha) off of me while I smacked the crap out of her with the big sword. Rang the second bell, and did pretty well!
Eventually I got through the toxic blowgun dudes, but they gave me a LOT of trouble. I think I died to them three times? I didn't know about the spider shield's ability until after the fact... Oof. When I go down there on my next character (a paladin build) I'll have lightning so I'm excited to wreck some face.

My first playthrough I actually skipped both the depths and upper blight town because my friend had warned me about it. This made things worse as I was ill equipped and under leveled to face Quelaag, so she took a long time for me to defeat. My second or so playthrough I finally went through it, and it was 10 fps hell, filled with laggy Invaders and dozens of gravity defying deaths. Good times. Nowadays I always make sure to go through the depths and most importantly upper blighttown. It has some of the most amazing level design and world building/ visual story telling in the souls games imho.
First time was bad with the Barbarians. It's not the poison or the damage, see, it's the knockback. Then the Ghouls jumping me a few times made me realize they're way tougher in groups than alone, so careful pulling was the next trick. Of course there's the falling stuff but tbh not that much for me unless I get knocked by an enemy off the scaffolding. BTW the one sneaky Barbarian in the tunnel has forever earned my hatred. I keep forgetting he exists. The ladders and way forward is a bit tricky at times but I learned to carefully observe. Blighttown is where you learn the importance of both footing and observation. Because swinging a Greatsword is really fun until you overstep on a rickety pathway fighting something, only to plummet down to your death because you risked a heavy attack. Blighttown is like the coming of age for any newb. It teaches you that ultimately just being good at hitting things won't be enough. You need to be smart and approach things properly with the right plan in mind. The Blowdarters make you listen to your surroundings and watch for their ambushes. The barbarians and ghouls force you to actually strategize a way around them and not just brute forcing it with lots of dodging and kiting due to the confined and narrow paths. And the bottom of the swamp teaches you the importance of both patience and decisiveness in your actions, between the muck and the poison squitoes, and it ultimately tests how prepared you are provisionally - as a whole zone that is.
It's perhaps the best teaching moment this game has. And it prepares you for something way way worse for every noob - Sen's Fortress. If you thought Blighttown was bad in terms of fighting enemies on narrow and lethal paths, Sen's Fortress is like if they gave the guy who made Blighttown some speed and told him to go hog wild with the difficulty. And don't even get me started on Tomb of Giants. Even with a light source that zone is just awful for my sanity.
