"The Notebook" brings its romance to Broadway

- In 1996 Nicholas Sparks' romantic novel "The Notebook" became a bestseller. Eight years later it was adapted to a classic movie starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. And the love story that was "a song, a dream, a whisper," is now a Broadway musical. Correspondent David Pogue talks with Sparks and with members of the creative team that turned his book into a show that is already causing considerable audience joy and weeping.

I read the book before the movie, then saw the movie and loved it as much as the book. The musical although has differences, it takes the best of the book and movie and expands all the feeling you have. I saw it during previews and now there have been a few tweaks but nothing was needed to improve the music, the words of the songs, and the wonderful cast. I am a forever fan.
The movie is one of my favorites but the musical didn’t do it for me.

I saw this again last night on Broadway. The crowd was on its feet mid way thru the final number...I cannot stress it enough.. the best Broadway show I have seen in 25 years.. Get your tickets and GO

Performances were fantastic, especially older Allie, and middle Allie -- Joy Woods is an absolute star! Ryan Vasquez is also one to watch -- he starred in not one, not two, but THREE out of town tryouts for three Broadway shows premiering this season and chose this one (Outsiders next door, and Water for Elephants across the street); he was also in off-Broadway's Gavin Creel's Walk On Through just before rehearsals started for this show, and blew the roof off the theater with his vocals.
He was also in the OBC of Waitress in the ensemble, covering the male leads and he has been called Baby Burr as he was the youngest actor to Poe stray Aaron Burr in Hamilton (he was a swing for most of the male leads, ensemble member playing the Doctor, etc. He was in the Wicked ensemble too. A San Jose kid who grew up in CMT. An incredible talent with a keen mind. He has the capacity for vibrant improvisation on top of the everything else. We are all so excited for him!

I saw Joy Woods when she played Audrey in off-broadway Little Shop of Horrors, and let me just say she is a star-in-the-making, and if I have the chance to go see the show, I know she will be phenomenal! 🌟
@@emeralddragon-yv1pg -- I regret not making it back out to NY for Joy as Audrey! I did see her as one of the urchins (when Groff, Borle, and Blanchard starred) and Joy was hilarious. Her quick rise will continue as her name becomes known. She's so down-to-earth, funny, and genuine.
Heavens , we need someone to write new plays instead of retro fitting old movies into musicals.
I saw the broadway show and I'm not a fan. The chemistry between the 3 Noah's and Allie's was not there. Loved the book and movie and as an avid theater goer this did not work.

To all the whiners, the show is actually excellent when you watch it. Is the casting confusing? Sure for maybe 2 minutes at the beginning and then you just enjoy it.

I loved the novel The Notebook, and adored the movie and was always amazed by Nicholas Sparks talent for writing to my heart, but this Broadway show is like The Little Mermaid, or The Cleopatra movie, it should not have been done. I realize that wonderful black actresses would love the chance to play certain roles, but not these. My black friends agree that this is strange. The Notebook is about a poor white family, and a rich white family in the Deep South. It worked as a movie because in large part the result of the casting. James Garner (miss him), Jena Rolins (miss her), Ryan Gosling, Rachel McAdams, and Sam Shepard, all acting brilliantly in the Deep South. Some things just don't translate between races and cultures. Would you cast a young Robert De Niro as the lead in Fiddler On The Roof? Every family has been touched by Alzheimer's including mine, but that is not the issue here.
100% I agree. Especially for the time in history the story takes place in the south before and after WW2. Not historically accurate. I like a good look back at the past. Your other point I also agree Example - Josh Groban amazing in Sweeney Todd but would be a disaster as MJ
Ryan Gosling is also a Canadian actor who plays the role you mentioned. That's what acting is, you can play the role of a character. I'm not sure why race matters so much.
I think the best book Sparks wrote is, “Three Weeks with my Brother,” a nonfiction memoir. Poignant and riveting. But Nicholas, c’mon, you’re almost 60 without any wrinkles or a single gray hair?! It’s called Aging with Grace.
Yeah, definitely dyed. I still do it every few months too, when too much grey is visible. I don't like looking 55 when I usually feel 33. I'm sure he feels the same, especially as a romance writer. Though at my age, it looks more natural to keep at least a few greys showing.
I dont know about this as a musical.
Nicholas knows the human heart. Not sure a musical will capture the intimacy of the book or film but the different timescapes looks interesting. Reading helps dementia whatever the case 🎉❤ Good luck Sparks!
Why the difference with interchangeable actors? Keep it consistent
It’s still one of my favorite books and movies. I’m looking forward to the musical. A Walk To Remember is also one of my favorite books, movies, and soundtracks and Nicholas Sparks autographed my book for me. A lot of people are surprised The Notebook the book has a sequel because they didn’t die together in the book. I wish A Walk To Remember made the movie a lot more like the book.
If he does a good job playing Romeo and if he can sing, Tom Holland should play Noah.
Terrible casting stunt. All for making the main characters BIPOC - yes, please! But, that choice should remain consistent for each character throughout the play. When you're casting multiple actors to play the same character over many years, it's important that those actors resemble each other, to avoid confusion, but, more importantly, to suspend disbelief and maintain the reality of the world of the play. Not to do so betrays those wise and well-established conventions, for no reason. Yes, by all means, cast the leads as BIPOC, please, but keep that choice consistent for each character. Not to do so - obsurdity.
Go see the show. I was not confused whatsoever.

How sad for you that merely having a black person cast in a role makes it so impossible for you to empathize with a character and a story that it actually "makes [you] sick".

People are not fans of race swapping characters and the movies have all bombed when they do
CBS would be screaming "cultural appropriation" if the works of African-American playwrights were "race-swapped."
This musical is simply amazing.. The music is beautiful and the performances are excellent..I cannot stress this enough to get to NYC and see this show!! IT IS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE THAT WILL STAY WITH YOU LONG AFTER THE CURTAIN CALL!!❤
