- Stephen Sondheim's musical about the long, complicated friendships of a trio of creatives, which was savaged by critics when it first debuted in 1981, has been rethought and restaged in an acclaimed revival that is now back on Broadway. Correspondent Rita Braver talks with stars Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, and director Maria Friedman, about bringing a work by one of the greats of musical theater to new light.

Daniel Radcliffe has put in the work on the boards. He’s used Broadway and the west end as training tools to becoming quite a special and remarkable actor. I hope the Tonys recognise this.
I saw this production twice in the west end. It was absolutely wonderful. Good luck to them.
I saw this production in previews, and cannot say enough good things about it. Sondheim would be extremely proud. In fact, I have no doubt that he IS extremely proud! Every last person in this production did an incredible job!
did you know that he and angela lansbury were friends if you know who that is of course
Seems unlikely someone would be a Sondheim fan and not know who she is. And she's even more well known than her Broadway roles. She had a vibrant career in TV, too. There may be some who don't know of her, but I'd guess her name recognition spans across generations.
@@kelsey1467 - Everyone knows who Angela Lansbury was. She voiced Mrs. Potts in Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast”.

And her role in "Manchurian Candidate" will scare the hell out of plenty of people for eons to come!lol
I went to see “Merrily We Roll Along” for Daniel Radcliffe and enjoyed every second of it. He’s absolutely wonderful in it, but so are Lindsay and Jonathan. Their chemistry is undeniable and watching them perform together was a lovely experience.
I love how they all look at each other with so much affection--you can tell they are friends. Maybe not Old Friends yet, but probably soon to be. And I saw this last night and it is AMAZING.
God, the way Friedman talks about Sondheim…it’s heartbreaking.😢
you're crying. I'm not crying. LOL
Merrily We Roll Along is a show that seems to hang by a thread - with the thinnest of plot and concept driving it. Yet each time I have seen it, it's hit me in a very deep and visceral emotional place. I have mourned the endings of friendships that I thought would last forever. I have wept for the brevity of life and the inevitability that we cannot hold onto innocence. I have been gutted by the emotional candor and raw emotional truth of the show. I'm hopeful that this production is as great as I want it to be. I guess we'll see how this production is. It sounds very promising to be sure, and the cast is quite strong. Hoping to see it before the end of its Broadway run.
Well, Company as a concept is just "a guy turns 35 and remembers conversations he had with his married friends as he ponders about his own love life", but it has hit me like no other show of his. The Sondheim-Furth partnership apparently has this wonderful gift of making mountains out of mole hills, in the best possible way.
I found universality in sentiments such as wanting everything to go back as it was (with dear friends - - - if only). Life gets in the way. And a partnership descending into a complete mess - you know people to whom this has happened. I do hope - not you. As the time rewinds in this show, I think we the audience keep hoping that the original spark & friendship can prevail. I think we're left with hope, but it's probably doomed.
Somdheims plots are always simple, contrived and all out bad
Exactly, company is the same. Not much of a plot, but is a great character study, and one that I can watch again and again and still find something new @@emalaw1329
I saw this a couple of nights ago and it's AMAZING. The entire cast was great, but Daniel was phenomenal.
Dan was SO good at Franklin Shepard, Inc. I knew nothing about this show but I love Jonathan Groff and it was totally worth the $500 to see it. We saw it this previous Saturday!
Watched the "Best Worst Thing..." documentary about the original production, and now incredibly excited to see this production. The leads' enthusiasm is contagious. I was fortunate to be at the re-start of the Company revival, and in the audience was Mr. Sondheim -- just a few short weeks before he passed. It would've been so amazing for him to be there for this show's revival opening as it's sure to flip the original production's misfortunes into a memorable success.
The musical itself was way ahead of its time. The problem with the original 1981 production, was the approach to casting. I don’t know whose idea it was, but Hal Prince and company sought to cast very talented, but very green, very fresh and inexperienced, YOUNG actors whose ages matched those of the characters at the END of the show, when the characters are their youngest, which is the BEGINNING of the story.
Because the story is told backwards, and begins with the characters being middle-aged when we first see them, the original cast was essentially kids playing characters who were 20 to 25 years older than the actors. It was like watching a high school or college production of Death of a Salesman . . . if it were also a musical! 😳
THIS cast - Goff, Mendez & Radclyffe - are, give or take, decades older than the original B’way cast, and are seasoned performers with life experience to inform their choices.
What I find so astonishing about Sondheim’s work in this show, is, for example, the fact that the love song, Not a Day Goes By, works both as a stand alone piece in case you know absolutely nothing about the characters, and, is a gut-punch by the time you hear it in the show. If memory serves, in the context of the original show, by the time the audience hears this love song, the audience knows more about the characters than the characters know about themselves. And, already knowing the outcome of this, new, just budding and blossoming romance, and how the story ends for this pair, powerfully shifts the meaning and impact of the song!
I hope this revival is wildly successful!
I’m so happy for Daniel !!! He’s just amazing!
I happened to see the original ‘81 production’s opening night. I was a young actor/singer in NYC and word was so bad about the production that they were selling the tickets at half price at TKTS - unheard of for a Bway opening! - and when I saw this I snatched one up for like $15. I enjoyed it immensely and will never forget that when the final curtain came down the young cast gave a huge shout from behind it in relief, I suppose. I hope this production does very well!
Wow.
Saw it Sat. night (9-30). Absolutely great! One of the best musicals I've ever seen.
I’m happy for Dan and the rest of the cast
what a difference lindsay mendez’s little choice at 0:41 makes for the whole feel of the scene. she’s so awesome.
Dan Radcliffe such a precious person
he really is, i saw this last weekend and there was no stage door for the Saturday matinee so we rushed back to do the stage door from the evening performance and we were right in front and he was so gracious and humble with everyone's compliments and even though he was in a rush he still took photos with every single person who asked (including me and my friend!) and engaged with every person. He's also the only one of these three who came and did the stage door that night, he's just lovely.
@@Amanda-ex6emhow long after the show do they usually come out? I thought about waiting after the Sat evening show but wasn't sure how long we'd have to wait and we got COLD.
I have seen Maria Friedman many times in the West End. Including in Sondheim. Unforgettable. If she can get these guys to be 10% as intellectually brilliant as she herself is, then she’s more than halfway there. Her personal connection to Sondheim means she will channel his heart and mind into the show. I have every confidence.
I saw this production off Broadway and it’s one of my favorite shows I’ve ever seen
I've never had the opportunity to see a production of this show, but "Not a Day Goes By" is one of Sondheim's best songs.
Daniel Radcliff has one of the most interesting entertainment careers ever. Love that he's always learning and taking big jumps, talented guy.
I saw Friedman's revival of Merrily at the Menier Chocolate Factory back in January 2013. It was so great, and I'm thrilled she's taken the show this far! It deserves it!
I want just a fraction of Lindsay's smile and joy. Her talent is infectious. What a great cast. RiP Stephen.
I love this trio so much, specially Jonathan! 💖💖💖
Yes!!!❤❤
It's our time breathe it in...worlds to change and worlds to win...
I saw it in previews a couple of weeks ago and it was incredible. ❤
Just saw it. It’s amazing! All three of them are amazing!
I went to the Hudson to see this last week with two friends and was just fully enveloped in it. The songs hit much harder once you've experienced the show as a whole. Go see it if you can!
Praying for a cast recording 🙏🏻💿
Maria played the narrator in the movie version of Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat. Growing up my sister and I played the DVD over and over. It’s one of my fondest memories.
If there was a musical movie of this Daniel and Jonathan should be in it i hope they get tony nominations next year
they are making a movie of it! Paul Mescal and Ben Platt are the leads
Richard Linklater is doing a movie adaptation that no joke will be out in 2040. He's going to film it over the next 20 years.
LOL @@offonmyown this is an underrated joke
@@Amanda-ex6em I legit thought this was a joke but apparently it's for real?! Which is insane. They've already had to replace one actor because of a domestic violence scandal. Who knows what else will happen with the cast in the coming years?
@@willschroth-douma1211it should be Jon, Dan and Lindsay. They sounded incredible together.
I wish I could see it with this cast. Maybe we’ll get a video of this production with this cast??? Some of us can’t get to New York and the traveling productions rarely have the first-run Broadway cast.
I feel you. There are so many productions I haven’t seen that I wish I could see. Wish there was a way.
Groff just brilliant. Like always. ❤
Just saw this show last night - phenomenal job by everyone involved. Truly an incredible performance. I wish I could see it again!
I've seen and worked on several productions of Merrily, most unsuccessful. It's so hard to go back in time from jaded and unhappy to young and enthusiastic. The music is some of my favorite written for Broadway and I'm so excited about this production and cast. Going in January and I can't wait!
I saw it yesterday and met Daniel Radcliffe it was amazing the revival
The MERRILY fandom It's finally getting all the attention it deserves after decades of being a Sondheim fan-only musical!
Super excited for this show! Revival of the year, nay, decade!
Saw him live and did not expect his stage presence the opposite the screen presence meaning he’s such a pro on stage and completely present and captivating. I’m a new Daniel acting fan.
Saw it Friday (9/29) and was smitten...highly recommend!👍 To be perfectly honest, my ONLY disappointment was that the incomparable big-voiced Lindsay doesn't get to belt Not a Day Goes By...and that's my bad for being raised on Bernadette and Marin's versions...it's not a belt song in the context of the show (it's faster and a bit halting...think Katrina Link performing Being Alive), and while the actress who does sing it (Katie Rose Clarke) does not have a big voice, she gives a funny and captivating portrayal.☺
the emotional impact of it snuck up on me at the end of the show and I was like, wait a minute, am I wreck right now? Yes, yes I was.
Love these actors!💖💖💖
Very excited about this now
I went to see it because Jonathan Groff was in it. He was his usual fantastic self. But his co-stars were equally fabulous - what a great evening. Such an interesting, bittersweet plot. Highly recommend it to anyone who will be in NYC before the cast changes.
Uhhhhh I wish I was in NYC!!!!
Exceptional talent. All three of them are up for Tony Awards on June 16th. I have a good feeling about this show. I think when it does win a lot of Tonys, they will extend it. It's supposed to close in July.
Love, love, love Groff.
Show tunes are road trip music for my family
So excited to see this in December. Oh my 30th birthday would be made so special if I get to meet Daniel Radcliffe at the stage door.
Wish I could see this 😭😭
I’m hoping Lindsay Mendez does another behind the scenes vlog, like when she did the Fly Girl series or the Carrie Diaries. ✨🥹
Hopefully
I like how Daniel didn’t say anything when the other two were excited about their faces on the door, probably bc he’s wildly used to seeing his face plastered everywhere 🤣🤣🤣
Lindsay was amazing in Dogfight.
hell yea
Daniel always finds himself in these M/M/F iconic trios huh.
Can we record Broadway shows to stream for the rest of us?
There is a reason(s) why this show bombed to begin with. What a journey. Break-a-leg to everyone!
Do you think Groff and Mendez dared him to pronounce 'theater' like that at 3:18 ?
Ok, crying. 🥹🥹🥹
I've been waiting for this revival for bajillion years and holy cow please somebody in New York City adopt me
I hope they make it into a movie. I am waiting for Wicked to Premiere in theaters.
I so wish I could see this. ❤️💔❤️💔❤️❤️💔❤️
I just saw this production yesterday, and it was fantastic! Unfortunately, Lindsay's understudy was in for her, but it was still terrific.
❤❤❤❤❤🎉
One of my all time fave shows but I am devoted to the rawness of the OBC….
Shame this isn't the movie cast honestly.
can someone make a slime tutorial for this?
Elaine peacock from eastenders version 1.0
Is the director the narrator in the movie musical of Joseph?!?!?!
yes!
👍
All the roles in Merrily are tough to sing
I never liked Sondheim's ungainly lyrics but Daniel Radcliffe has stretched himself in every interesting direction possible since Harry Potter. Good luck to his run.
It's terrific for him!!! He has to " leave" Harry behind.
What exactly do you find ungainly about Sondheim's lyrics? The fact that he describes real life and therefore he has to use common terms? The fact that he likes to amuse himself with unusual rhymes? His spontaneity? I'm just guessing because that's the last word I'd use to describe his writing style, and I find most of his distinctive traits as a lyricist charming. I'm curious to know.
@@emalaw1329 well said
dang, aint she retired yet ????
The interviewer is so common denominator and doesn’t understand what she is discussing. I guess that’s what Sunday morning tv is.
Merrily We Roll Along could have been a huge Broadway success had it not been for Prince's terrible production. Dreary & incompetent. So glad it has been revived.
Go off
😱😵💫😱😵💫😱😅😂😛😜🤣🤪😅😜😛😂🤪🤣🎈🎈 3:33
Andy body watching in 2024?
Jane Pauley?????????
A waitress was given a $500 tip to go watch the show.
DR looks so emaciated. I hope he isn't suffering from an illness. :(
He is a new Dad. That is what your face looks like for the first two years.
'Emaciated' is a tad melodramatic. He's always had a slight build. And now he's singing and dancing several times a week. Between work and family he's probably eating less while exerting himself more
I can't stand the interviewer! It's like she disdains them with her questions.
It was boring and I give it the same review it originally got which was not great.
None of these songs stand out to me. JMO
Maria Friedman’s West End production was terrific. I’m not so sure about the casting of Daniel Ratcliffe though. He seems to have a following in the US, but quite frankly his West End turns have been very B-list performances. Most of us on this side of the Atlantic find him a bit of a joke.
He is the best! and you're blind 🙂 it's Radcliffe by the way
Considering Daniel Radcliffe has never been nominated for a Tony, despite this being his fourth time on Broadway, the critics view him as a seat filler rather than a legitimate contender. No one would have invested in a “Merrily We Roll Along” revival, and for good reason, had there been no guarantee the show would sell out before previews began. Remember, this musical is a notorious critical and commercial flop.
@@ChienaAvtzonLast year this revival was sold-out off- Broadway and the reviews from critics were amazing so check the facts before speaking nonsense. Daniel has a very good chance to be nominated for a Tony next year
Only doing well, cause it’s three celebrities..
Oh how wrong you are. Did you see it or just making a wild judgement call? They are elevating it with their performances, yes. But the show is absolutely incredible.
I would implore you to watch the London cast of this revival - the tweaks to the book make it really fly (the 2012 Menier version mentioned in the middle of this piece). It’s still floating about online and well worth a watch.
Why?
