I've unraveled a few thrifted sweaters. Things to keep in mind while purchasing sweaters: Make sure the sweater is larger than the size you plan to knit/crochet; If you plan to crochet with the yarn from a knit sweater, remember that crochet takes more yarn than knitting the same size item; Make sure the sweater you want to unravel was knit in pieces NOT cut into pieces like when sewing. Things to keep in mind while unraveling: Undo seams first; Seams are often sewn with a chain stitch, so if you find the correct end (the rounded part of the chain rather than the pointy part) you can work out the end and pull it out of the round end chain, then it will pull out without needing to pick out each chain stitch; Wind the yarn onto a swift as you unravel the sweater, this will prevent the yarn from tangling while in a pile; It is okay to cut the fuzz balls (those fuzzy bits that wrap build up and basically tie two sections of yarn together) that tend to form while unraveling, just be careful not to cut the yarn while doing so. A sewing seam ripper can help with this; and Don't rush, rushing will only encourage snagged stitched to become tighter.
I love watching your videos. Happy to hear you had a wonderful visit with your friend, it was a shot in your creative arm. your flowers and yellow yarn-ball and hand pieces are so beautiful. so many times you have made my heart sing. thank you.
Another big plus to being multicraftual: if you're unable to do your main craft, you can still be creative. I'm so thankful that I'm also a seamstress so I can make while I'm unable to knit and crochet.
GM Taylor Love that you have gotten into your art … please show when you have new things I also have done water colour and loved it and it’s a change to see !!! Follow your passions and your knits are always beautiful!!! Have a great week 😊💝🇨🇦🇨🇦
Hi Tayler, I missed you but so glad you had a great time with your friend. I love your paintings but especially the one with an arm reaching for the yarn. It is so interesting, different and the colours, oh my! Just love love love❤ You inspired me to make the Ilene bag. I have been wanting to do so for a while but I am doing it! Happy knitting! 😘
I love multicraftual!!! I knit, crochet, cross stitch and avid reader. Needless, to say listening to someone talk about the side crafts, is wonderful. I always get great books to add to my list. Glad to enjoyed your mini vacation with your friend.
I love the term multicraftual!! I sew, quilt, crochet, knit, needlework( embroidery, crewel and needlepoint). I dabble with repressing furniture and doing a little upholstery. It started out because I like nice things and learned to make it/ do it so I could spend less. It has brought me a lot of joy and it has kept me sane for most of my life!!
Multicraftual?? OMG! YES!!! Painting, crochet, knitting, sewing, quilting, furniture refinishing, scrapbooking. Now I have a term for my ADHD-ness of my life. ❤️
Fellow multicrafter here! Glad to hear your birthday weekend was a great time. Loved seeing your art! After the teaser about a MAL, I found some sweaters (3) to harvest from a church rummage sale, and could not believe there were actually crocheted seams! (I always try to find a larger than I need item to thrift). I think we called them caveman vests from the 80s. Super soft BUT, there are 6 strands together, 3 laceweight and then 3 eyelashy kind of yarn. What.a.job.! Have 2 vests mostly unraveled, but I'm going to save those for something else, taking advantage of the softness. I have some leftover macrame cording, considering using that for a bag for this MAL. Can't wait!
I have a sweater that I loved to death - It's threadbear. You have inspired me to take it apart and reclaim the yarn (it's acrylic but a marled colorway that I want to use for something else). I saw a different podcast where they talked about knitting/crocheting dryer balls. You stuff them with those yarn ends we all have. I've been collecting mine to use as some kind of stuffing. Any yarn that is animal fiber works. And they are eco friendly replacing those single user dryer sheets. Mulitcraftual is a great new term for me.
That’s a fascinating idea! I don’t really have yarn ends, but I cut yarn from damaged t-shirts, and I can’t really use the arms, hems, or even the printed area (unless I’m making a woven rug). I’d probably stuff a knit/crocheted ball with that? I love the idea! I was struggling to find an idea for those besides a hoard for fabric recycling.
Your paintings are beautiful! I am in CA surrounded by Poppies, so much orange! I really love the little black tee and hope you are able to publish the pattern before summer is over. No pressure!! I think I will try a produce bag out of the net bag my lemons are in. Can't wait to see if it works out and enter the MAL. Thanks for the fun episode.
Having another crafty thing can help your brain with color theory and blocking. After seeing that vase of poppies, I want to make a rug in those colors. I just finished a lap blanket (or maybe it will be a rug) with cotton yarn harvested from a shorts/skirt thing I made 5 years ago. I'll share pics, but I'll make something for the MAL, too. #timing 🤣
Ma'am, your podcast is called "WoolNeedlesHands" and you're using your HANDS to craft, not just wool & needles ❤️. You shine on with your multicraftual self!
Awesome paintings! I’ve been dabbling in watercolor, and it is so refreshing to go between different crafts; I agree, it makes me love knitting, my main squeeze, even more when I return to it.
I have many interests. Primarily knitting and photography, but I also do digital art, pottery, weaving, spinning, paper crafts (cards, bookmarks, etc.), polymer clay, wood burning, metal and woodwork. I think being multicraftual provides a break and recenter for my primary interests.
I am so excited about the MAL that I just may cry! I have a maxi vest made in #10 cotton that was my grandmother’s. She did not crochet it but did purchase it. She really wanted me to have it but it is not my style. I have been taking good care of it but we really downsized our home and needed to downsize my closet. Anyway I had sadly on Friday I decided to donate it. BUT on a happy note the bag is still in my garage! I will be unraveling it and making something else. Possibly a crochet Angel or doll. Thank you sooooo much Tayler!!!!!!! Your paintings are beautiful. 🌸🌵
Oh Catherine! This is great news! I'm so glad you'll be able to keep the sweater in the family! I can't wait to see what it becomes. An angel would be so sweet!
Thank you for showing us your paintings - I love them both! I think a lot of us are multicraftual. I mostly knit and crochet because when I sit in my favorite chair I’m surrounded by yarn and projects and it’s so easy to pick up something to work on. However, I also make jewelry, paint, weave, have a spinning wheel which I hope to learn on, and write a little.
the MAL sounds really fun. My friend's dad gave me some wire-like yarn, repurposed from my friend's weaves and projects. I think I'll crochet a huge basket to keep my WIPs in
I work with my hands and need something to listen to in the back, thank you for this lovely podcast ❤ Coming from another knitter + painter + reader I really enjoy your video and it's soo true! We do need to move from one project to another to keep that mojo going.
I have a knitted sweater that had a mishap in the washing machine... I think it'll ake a good base for a handbag or maybe something else! This sounds like a fun make-a-long. Thank you for encouraging creative freedom!
Your MAL sounds like a lot of fun! Need to see what I may have to repurpose. I love your variegated tee and agree having multiple craft interests is so important for sustaining creativity. Thank you for sharing 🌸
I’ve always dipped into several different crafts and stop knitting for a week ,recently, to picked up one of my 4 different crafts. It helps so much to reset my brain , clear my thought process and move forward 😅 wow your paintings are pretty, t-shirt for the arm and yarn !
Yes! Multicraftual!! You are genius!! I am that!! Knitting my first love. Drawing, painting, crocheting, sewing. My husband says "you have too many hobbies" i am multicraftual" yes!! 😅 this will be a good idea for a t shirt? Big hug Tailer you are the best!! ❤
I love being multi-craftual. Knitting is actually my second go to craft. Writing is the first. But there are others waiting in the wings. I'm slowly (very slowly) trying to figure out the spinning thing, I'm planning on trying pottery as part of my retirement plan, and of course dyeing yarn. I'm also a huge doodler (especially if I'm in a work meeting!).
My sister lives in Reno and works in Incline Village. She was so happy for warm weather. She called me on the way to work and was thrilled she could see the ground again and the snow was finally melting on the mountain in Lake Tahoe. I completely agree with the painting. I love watercolor and spring always tends to get me excited about painting too. Your pieces are fun and I like the bold colors. #somethingoldsomethingnew is a fun idea!
I can see the opportunity for your painting to start to influence your dyeing, if it hasn't already. I love crocheting, knitting, cross -stitching, refinishing furniture, reupholstering, scrapbooking, paper quilling, paper mache and the list could go on and on. Too many things and not enough time so I'm focussing on 3 this summer to get projects done. The MAL sounds exciting because I have a couple of ideas with stash yarn and some repurposing. Thanks for the opportunity to take part without social media!
EEEEE!!! so excited! I had missed the shop update because i was traveling for work, but still managed to order some yarn!...can't wait to squish it in person! LOVE the Verdigris color!
I did zero knitting for a repurpose. I had crochet a "cardigan" when I first started: just a big rectangle with ends sewed together for arms. It didn't fit well, and I can't sit comfortably with it on. This video motivated me to just undo the stitches. Now my kid is happy with a new blanket 😅
yesssss, multicraftual, love that! I've never participated in a make a long before, but this sounds fun, I think I might try and squeeze it in. I'm doing hand made gifts for my bridesmaids and some of them wanted market bags, so maybe I can hit two birds with one stone :)

I’m a watercolor/gouache artist who knits and crochets. I learn things in one medium but it shows up in the other. It’s so freaking cool! Just like you Tayler! Would love to paint with you. ❤
I have unraveled several cotton sweaters in the past. I have been thinking about making a summer tank or tee from some of this yarn recently. I paid close attention to the sweaters I chose. I made sure they were pieced and not sewn together with a sewing machine. It does take time and patience to get each section started.
I agree so much with you about being multicraftual. It helps in so many ways and when I’m burned out on one craft I have others to turn to. I’m interested in the mal and I have a beloved tee I want to do something with, like turn into a bag maybe. It’s too small for me now as I’m into oversized tees more these days (smh at the skin tight clothes of my youth lol) Anyway… I have no idea what to because I want to feature the image on the front of the tee and I want to do everything by hand. Love your videos as always! ❤❤❤
Nice! I got about 1600 yards of lace/fingering weight yarn from the thrift shop that had been frogged. I connected it all and then washed/thwacked it to get the curls out. I need to make a window cover for my office and that should be enough.
I have been thinking about making market bags since I watched your video about them. I have a perfect yarn from stash I bought during a yarn crawl and have not known what to do with it. My recycled portion is that I am going to line the bag(s) in recycled t-shirts that I no longer wear and can't get rid of. I was also looking at the crocheted produce bags and recycle something for the ties. Yes, I will be putting other projects on the back burner... :)
I used your videos to unravel a couple sweaters. I think plant fibres are easier than animal fibres from my limited experience. I managed to harvest everything except the button band from a cotton cardigan. A wool blend sweater didn't go quite as smoothly but it was well used (20 years of wear lol) and slightly felted.
I am multicraftual as well. I am mainly a card maker, but last year I started knitting again and starting tomorrow I embark on learning how to crochet. I also like to draw and paint with watercolors. I only have one tube of gouache (white) in order to make galaxy images with my watercolors and I incorporate that into my card making.
Oooo....interesting MAL. The little plastic ziplocks in my Chiaogoo interchangeable sets that hold the t-pins, stitch markers, etc., are basically toast. I've been thinking of sewing a few little "envelope" type things to substitute for them, including a small piece of felt to stick the t-pins in. This might give me the push I need to get that done.
Knitting is one of my "side crafts" but it kind of took over and became the main craft... Someday I will get back to painting, drawing, beading, weaving, macrame, etc
Thank you for telling us about the email option as i don't use other social media. I am so looking forward to joining in ❤ Taking your advice, i am going to put aside a lace pattern knitting project which is driving me nuts to make an Ilene bag.
Yay im totally in for the MAL. I love unraveling theifted sweaters . . . In theory lol. It seems that they always have issues for me too. But sometimes its worth it to persevere. I got a sweater quantity of lace weight cashmere that way, but Holy cow what a nightmare to unravel because it kept breaking. I have knots all throughout my cakes. But I did make a shawl out of it and its like a floaty cloud - so nice. And I still have a ton left. So my tip would be to make sure its a quality of yarn that is worth the effort - dont bother with acrylics and whatnot. And the bigger the yarn, the easier it will be to unravel. Im excited to make a bag though! Gotta plan what I'm going to make. I will probably use stash yarn, but I have a bunch of leather that I stripped off a couch that was in the trash years ago, so maybe I can make a pocket with that. We will see.
I relate so much to the multicraft: I have way too much interest to fit in one day! 😂 I will totally participate in the makealong: I will unravel a shirt I knit all in coton that I stoped wearing. My goal is to crochet the yarn to make a granny square pillow (my dog chew on the existing one!)
I’m making tshirt yarn literally as I’m watching this video 😅 I wish I had watched this video earlier so I could have participated in the MAL, but I’m a little behind on your videos :) also, I’m almost done on a Carbeth cardigan that I’m making using yarn that I harvested from two sweaters and a baby blanket! I love repurposing yarn 😊
You always have inspiration for me. I ended up doing a market bag (and deviated from knitting to crochet) with some yarn that was gifted to me…and now I want to make more. Loving the progress on the Little Black Tee. 👍🏻
Such amazing timing! I've had this Ilene Bag in my queue since the last podcast you mentioned it on AND i have an old leather strap I plan on pairing it with. Clearly, the universe wants me to park my current WIPs for the month of may lol. Also, that painting of the lady's hand with the yellow yarn?!?! Please let us know if you will be selling prints on your site. I need this up on the wall of my craft room! Thank you for continuing to put out such quality content.
Oh, I love that you’re painting as well. I just took a watercolor class and love painting as well. And yes, it totally helps with my color in my knitting and yeah, just all-around good stuff
I love your art and I'm excited about the MAL! I have a partially made shawl that I just won't finish (and I don't remember which pattern I was using!) so this MAL will be perfect.
Oh man! I have a sweater that I'm thinking of unravelling to make a vest with the yarn so that project is out. I will look into the Karen Templar tutorial, last time I improvised a sweater for myself was in my early knitting days decades ago.
Ok - you are motivating me! I have a pile of my kids knit t shirts, leggings, pj’s, etc. I just don’t have the heart to donate them so I am going to knit a large pouf for the play room.
WARNING - super long comment 🙄😁😏 You and Gladys are quite a pair 😄 I love your rambling so much. Everything makes sense actually as you're processing your thoughts! Tayler: do you keep notes (for example on the design, changes, decisions of your husband's sweater) in a notebook, on Knit Companion or on Ravelry? I'm multicraftual too!!! (And that is definitely a word that will take off! More proof of your creativity 👏🏾) I have to rein myself in as I have far too many interests and have practiced so many, it isn't financially possible to do them all. I miss sculpting a lot. But knitting, gardening, cooking, writing (essays, haiku) and crocheting bring me all kinds of happiness these days. I painted (acrylics, oils, water colors) when I was young. My daughter paints now (really well) which pleases me no end. Love the MAL idea but I have some WIPs and projects I have to complete in the next couple of months 😐 I'll be repurposing found yarn in the future tho. And may I suggest that the prize for the MAL be one of your shirts (Hello hello hello) or a skein of your beautiful yarn?
Thank you so much for this comment Noelle! It means a lot to me (and I see that you shopped the update. Thank you 🙏❤)! I actually do keep notes. I use a regular notebook as I tend to be a very paper/pencil type of person. As for 'multicraftual', I think I picked that up somewhere...however I can't remember where I saw it. Multiartistical on the other hand is my own invention. 😂 I love that you're a writer. I love narrative writing and often think one day I'll write a book...one can dream! As for the MAL prize, a tee is a great idea! Thank you for suggesting it. ❤
Love your paintings! I love to knit, dabble in crochet and craft weaving and in my 50's have done some water color painting. Might have to branch out and get into gouache. Gardening is another thing I love--getting flowers on my deck, around my house and loving how they look and inspire me. The MAL is fascinating--will have to consider the options I have. Thanks for the idea!
i am so excited about this mal! i got a lot of stash yarn and old projects from my aunt recently and i've been thinking about what to do with them, so this feels like perfect timing haha i will start searching for a pattern right now, thanks for the inspiration and motivation boost
I have been told to put the thrifted sweater into the freezer before unraveling because it apparently make it come apart easier? I still have to give that tip a try, but now have a great reason to do so :)
Right now in Marquette, Michigan in a snow storm😮 Good sweater working day. Would love to do market bag... is wool ever an option for a market bag? Have lots of repurposed washable wool yarn.
I do have an appropriate project for the MAL that has been bubbling away in my head lately. I want to knit some cotton yarn from my stash into a Castor Oil Pack for me to wear overnight, the original pack I bought isn't going to last forever and they aren't cheap. The repurposed component of the project would be the outer panel of the pack that protects clothes and bedding from castor oil transfer. I was thinking of purchasing an old rain coat or similar from a charity shop for this purpose and then using my nineth grade Home Ec skills and my sewing machine for the purpose of which they were intended. I'm sure my liver and my hip pocket will thank me, and cheers for the creative nudge to I needed to silence the brain goblin telling me not to bother. 🖖
Your channel is called .... Wool Needles Hands...... I think the "hands" covers painting, sewing, knitting, carving, quilting.... so many possibilities
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS I already did a test run and made a small basket out of an old pair of leggings. The plan is to harvest 1-2 sheets and make a big basket for the couch-blanket to live in.
I love the idea of the something old MAL. I have a bunch of Xmas tshirts that I was about to thrift. I might turn them into t-shirt yarn and make something with them. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
When you pull apart an object, like your husband’s sweater, the wool is crinkly… so how do you manage that? The wool, reusing it will be crinkly. Do you do anything to it or just knit along.
You’ll have to skein it then tie it off in a few places so it doesn’t tangle. Then give it a soak in warm water with some wool wash, roll it in a towel and press out the excess water then lay it out to dry. After that most of the kinkiness should be gone.
Could you please remind me where we post our submission for the #breakthecursekal? The last I heard, you were thinking about it being an emaile submission. Or are you relying only on the hashtag? I can’t find the info anywhere in my remedial searches. So if anyone knows, I would love the forwarding of info.
I’ve unraveled several sweaters from alpaca, cashmere, merino, silk, linen, etc. First one left me with about 60% usable lovely yarn. Now I would say I can successfully harvest 99% of every sweater. Here’s how I get that success rate: 1- Buy sweaters that are at least a sport or dk weight for unraveling your first item. Large sizes will naturally give more yarn. Be aware the button bands may be cut and machine stitched for buttonholes. That’s waste yarn. Pullovers may be a better choice. 2- Stick with mostly natural fibers that will relax through soaking or steaming 3- inspect thoroughly for staining and holes. Spot clean where necessary, but you’ll be soaking the skein of yarn to relax it, so add a little detergent. 4- Most machine made sweaters are knitted from the BOTTOM up, so unraveling would be in reverse. 5- Seams usually have a chain stitch visible on one side. It looks like a single row of knit stitches with the “v” at the bottom. That will tell where to start picking apart the chain. If the v’s are upright, follow them to the top and start there. 6- First remove any neck bands, then knitted bands, like on cardigan. 7- Spread apart the top of a seam to locate the “ladders” of the chain stitch. This is where you snip a few ladders to get things going. 8- Go to the chain side of the seam and pick away at a couple of the stitches and then try pulling the yarn line of straight stitches on the other side of the seam and it should start one long strand of yarn pulling the seam apart. This is a rewarding step! If you have difficulty getting the row started, there may be a few chain stitches at the top of the seam that look like a crocheted chain. Snip it off. 9- Separate all the pieces of the sweater. The top bind off row takes some time to unravel. If you get stuck, try it from the other end, if it wasn’t clear where the row ended. Remember that frogging is done in reverse of knitting. 10- I like to hand wind a ball as I frog, then put on a swift. Add figure 8 ties before soaking/washing. Hang to dry, gently smoothing out the kinks. * Note: machine made sweaters are often knitted with multiple thin strands held together. This can pose a problem of yarns splitting when knitted. Examine a stitch carefully to make an informed choice. Check that seams are not machine serged or you’ll get a multitude of short strands of yarn.
Does making poor life choices count as a multi-crafter maker? I mean I have like a dozen other crafty hobbies but I really excel at the first one. Knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, bead weaving, bead embroidery, beaded jewelry, wire work jewelry, polymer clay bead making, polymer clay sculpting, cookie decorating, cake decorating, watercolour painting, acrylic painting, decorative painting on wooden furniture, and writing notes on my hand to remember stuff.
lol! I mean, sure. But outside of your poor life choices, this list of other things you get up to certainly qualifies you. Unless you're suggesting that having this many crafty hobbies is itself a poor life choice. Which I'd have to disagree with. That's a positive life choice. ❤
How about yarn I found in a Value Village thrift store? I found 2000 yards of Rowan Silkstones sport weight yarn. 52% silk 48% wool. Color Eau De Nil. Kind of a teal color. 10 - 200 yard skeins. All of it for $6.00! I still can't believe I found it. I'm thinking this won't work because there's 2000 yards. It would have to be a sweater. I'm not one for pulling a sweater apart. I just re-knit a Ranunculus sweater for the third time. Tore it out twice and it was not easy. I'm now making a Bright Side sweater, on the recommendation of another podcaster that has made it before and says it's a go to sweater she loves. I'm on the quest to find the "perfect" sweater/pullover pattern that I can go back to over and over and be able to knit it with no problems. You can take a pattern and change it by short sleeves long sleeve, pattern work, no pattern work, etc. I want the perfect pattern that I can do that to. I've done that with the Ranunculus about 8 times. They are all different. I'm knitting through my stash this year. I've made 6 sweaters, 1 shawl and three baby blankets this year already. The Bright Side will be number 7. I will be happily watching you all making cool things from your repurposed yarns. Maybe it will inspire me. Thank you for all the inspiration you give us each week. It really does give me things to consider.
Hi! Yes! Absolutely use your thrifted yarn. This is a great opportunity for that. And I understand not wanting to get involved with unraveling a sweater. It's not much fun!
Yes. You are absolutely right, which is why I suggest here that folks watch my tutorial prior to choosing a sweater. The seaming style is crucial. Thank you for sharing this!
I am in the middle of a bout of severe food poisoning. During a break in the action, I fell into a fitful, feverish sleep. I dreamed that you and I met. I felt compelled to inform you that a man does not wear a Pom Pom on his hat. That is all. 😂😂😂
Lol! Gosh, I’m sorry you’re dealing with food poisoning, but I love that I appeared in your fever dream and that you were able to enlighten me on men and their pom pom preferences. That’s top notch dreaming. 😉❤️
This was very helpful, thank you!
GM Taylor
Love that you have gotten into your art … please show when you have new things
I also have done water colour and loved it and it’s a change to see !!!

Isn't it kind of magical! I love having an open relationship with my crafts! lol. ❤️
Tayler, I wish you were my next door neighbour :) I love your chattiness and how you share everything you love and do.
Thank you so much Jane! I'm glad you're on board for the MAL! ❤️
We are the same Jeanette! And our husbands think alike! 😂Hugs back at ya. ❤
I’m a watercolor lover too! I love that you are talking about it too.
Great video, LOVE your art work and always love your knit work!! love, hugs, prayers
Oh yay!! Thank you Amy! ❤️
I love this idea for a MAL and I've already got solid plans for a crochet cushion that's stuffed with repurposed yarns and fabrics.
Hi everyone! It’s a chatty one today, but I had a really good time catching up. I hope y’all are doing well!
❤ y’all.

I love the idea of repurposing yarn and giving it a second life!
I love your art style! 💜
Great MAL idea! I frogged a thrifted sweater almost 2 years ago but it sat waiting for me to be inspired, thanks!
Beautiful painting!! Congrats
Thank you Karen!
I’m so glad you shared the paintings-I’m so inspired to try gouache now!
Nice! I got about 1600 yards of lace/fingering weight yarn from the thrift shop that had been frogged. I connected it all and then washed/thwacked it to get the curls out. I need to make a window cover for my office and that should be enough.
You have me inspired to make a tee. I love the neck and sleeve length you are going for.
I am a quilter who just recently started knitting. And I’m loving learning a new craft. Thanks for the encouragement. I love this podcast.
I'm excited for the motivation to crochet a bag with some yarn I had thrifted!
I'm so glad! It's going to be a good one. ❤️
I'm big on houseplants as well as knitting so loving the variegated tee. Will purchase to support your awesome channel.
This means so much to me. Thank you! ❤️
Loved your podcast Tayler, so informative as usual. You are so talented with the painting, loved them all 🥰
I love your today's podcast, and I knit, crochet, paint (water color, oil, acrylic etc.) and I just love and appreciate arts and creativity 😉
I love your art. Very cool!
Thank you Linda!
If only we had a couple more hours in the day!
Trying to unravel thrifted sweater, I’m hoping I get the unraveling done before June 7 deadline 😡
What a fun idea…thinking cap on!
I love "multicraftual"! I’m one of those people too! Is there a T-shirt that says that?
I love your art and I'm excited about the MAL! I have a partially made shawl that I just won't finish (and I don't remember which pattern I was using!) so this MAL will be perfect.
Oh man! I have a sweater that I'm thinking of unravelling to make a vest with the yarn so that project is out. I will look into the Karen Templar tutorial, last time I improvised a sweater for myself was in my early knitting days decades ago.
Yesss, I'm multicraftual tooooo :)🥰
Ok - you are motivating me! I have a pile of my kids knit t shirts, leggings, pj’s, etc. I just don’t have the heart to donate them so I am going to knit a large pouf for the play room.
Yesss!! That would be amazing!
WARNING - super long comment 🙄😁😏
You and Gladys are quite a pair 😄 I love your rambling so much. Everything makes sense actually as you're processing
your thoughts!
I love that you're a writer. I love narrative writing and often think one day I'll write a book...one can dream!
As for the MAL prize, a tee is a great idea! Thank you for suggesting it. ❤
I love to do multi crafts also! Thanks cor sharing your paintings!
Thanks for the idea!
nice high-contrast paintings! you could make them into intarsia designs to knit into sweaters 🙂
Thank you! And I suppose I could, however I am VERY intimidated by intarsia, truth be told. ❤️
i am so excited about this mal! i got a lot of stash yarn and old projects from my aunt recently and i've been thinking about what to do with them, so this feels like perfect timing haha i will start searching for a pattern right now, thanks for the inspiration and motivation boost
I have been told to put the thrifted sweater into the freezer before unraveling because it apparently make it come apart easier? I still have to give that tip a try, but now have a great reason to do so :)
Interesting! But I can imagine this would work!
I love the variegated t-shirt. What color are you wearing? There is so much choice!
I’m glad you like it! I’m wearing the Mauve color (believe it or not-this isn’t what I think of when I think of mauve). ❤️❤️
Right now in Marquette, Michigan in a snow storm😮
Good sweater working day.
Would love to do market bag... is wool ever an option for a market bag? Have lots of repurposed washable wool yarn.
Yes! Wool is a great all around fiber so go for it!
That T is something I think I would get so much use
I'm glad you think so! Thank you Dianne!
Love the tshirt
Thank you Jodie!
I LOVE this. Thank you! I totally agree. ❤️❤️
i'd love to takle my plans to make a basket out of old sheets for the MAL, but sadly i don't think i have the time for it this semester.
This is definitely a fantastic idea! You should give it a try when you find some time. ❤
@@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS I already did a test run and made a small basket out of an old pair of leggings. The plan is to harvest 1-2 sheets and make a big basket for the couch-blanket to live in.
I knit, crochet and paint (water-based oils) …I am MULTICRAFTUAL!!! I get it and love it!!!
Absolutely! ❤
does it count as repurposed if I am planning to use inherited crochet thread and hold it triple+ to make washcloths?
Sure! I don't see why not!
I love the idea of the something old MAL. I have a bunch of Xmas tshirts that I was about to thrift. I might turn them into t-shirt yarn and make something with them. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Missed you last Sunday!
Thank you Marjorie! It’s good to be back. ❤
Ok I need to know what color shirt you're wearing!
This is the mauve color. ☺️☺️❤️
Exactly. Thank you Sheryl. ❤️
Could you please remind me where we post our submission for the #breakthecursekal? The last I heard, you were thinking about it being an emaile submission. Or are you relying only on the hashtag? I can’t find the info anywhere in my remedial searches. So if anyone knows, I would love the forwarding of info.
Absolutely! All MAL submissions can be emailed to be at woolneedleshands@gmail.com. ❤️
I’ve unraveled several sweaters from alpaca, cashmere, merino, silk, linen, etc. First one left me with about 60% usable lovely yarn. Now I would say I can successfully harvest 99% of every sweater. Here’s how I get that success rate:
1- Buy sweaters that are at least a sport or dk weight for unraveling your first item. Large sizes will naturally give more yarn. Be aware the button bands may be cut and machine stitched for buttonholes. That’s waste yarn. Pullovers may be a better choice.
2- Stick with mostly natural fibers that will relax through soaking or steaming
3- inspect thoroughly for staining and holes.
@@thriftythreader5998 This is fantastic information! Thank you!
Can we harvest yarn from a project we are just OVER?
I just started a market bag from frogged yarn so I’m also hoping this counts!
Yes! Totally!
Where do I go to find your merch
Hi there! You can find WNH merch here:
www.woolneedleshands.com/merch
❤
Off topic but since you're growing your hair out maybe try some stash busting hair bands!
Does thrifted yarn count?
Yes. For sure!
The show note link doesn't work
Thank you for letting me know. All fixed now!
👍
hi :) could i participate in the break the curse knit along as a crocheter no worries if not I was just hoping to join
Yasss!!! For sure. ❤️
When trying to unravel a found sweater make note that a machine/factory fine knit sweater likely won’t unravel at all.
