i wish that my school situation could be as what was just demonstrated to me. wow i just love it, here in South Africa we have over crowded classrooms, small space no room for our centres, and no assistant teachers available so we have 37, 39 learners
This is amazing, and im so frustrated in Puerto Rico its not nothing like this. Students in kindergarten have to take all the classes: math, sciense, spanish, english, social studies, and health, they dont have learning centers and its not working at all. I teach english in multiple groups and my kindergarten students cant read at all,, they dont even know the alphabet!
The day is waayy too long for kindergarteners, at least where I live. When I went, we got dismissed @11am. Other students I knew, 12pm. Going to 2:45 pm everyday is waayy too long. I know this from substituting.
I am begging someone to please put up a guided video about daily routines when it comes to teaching ESL multiple grades. I'm about to start work outside of the states and we don't get assigned one group of kids. We rotate. I will be teaching ESL to preschool, Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. There just doesn't seem to be any helpful videos or even websites for us teachers having to teach multiple grades everyday. I would love some help on how to plan for multiple grades without going crazy. If someone knows of any helpful videos or websites for teachers like me, please point me in the right direction.

Funny how the educational approach in kindergarden demolishes the homogeneous retention of knowledge advanced grades demand. Imagine if junior high and high school were this interactive.
Please elaborate on what you mean by this. All grade levels should include interactive, cross curriculum and varied instructional methods like whole group, guided and individual work times. This is mandated in most districts.
That room is so crowded with stuff! Over-stimulation, and too many activities - not enough outside play time (In my opinion), and way too many kids in the classroom

Taught some really weak grade two kids once. their standard was similar to this.
It really depends on what background a child comes from. For example if they went to a quality early childcare centre, if their parents read to them, if their family has the time and money to provide them with enriching literature, etc. Also everyone develops at different rates, so often a child might not be developmentally ready to spell whole words when they first enter kindergarden.
Roxanne TheArtist You can do sight words at home which help. I cut typing paper in half and wrote the words with markers, and rearranged them, 3 words at a time. It took about 30-60 minutes a day and taught about 10 words a day, while reviewing them each day. And I also got the Level 1 & 2 books from the library and read with my daughter. She's 4 and entering preschool next month. We also go over adding, subtracting, short and long sounds, etc. And she earns stickers or incentives from the library like free pizza. You don't really need a lot of money, just a fun learning atmosphere. You can also tape words around the house like on The Color Purple :)
Why do so many kindergarden teachers in the US model the spelling of their words incorrectly?? It just baffles me why you would want to teach 5 year olds, which absorb things at an incredible rate, inaccurate spelling.
Red Deer They need to hear, understand and use use those sounds to create words first. In 1st grade and on they will learn more about the "silent" letters and sounds in words that create a correctly spelled word. Knowing how to just spell a word will mean nothing if they can't decode and break apart a word first, if they can't sound a word out and under the letter sounds in a word they will struggle with reading and writing. Just because you can spell a word does not mean you can read a word.
In the beginning, the teacher wrote those words all wrong because she was having the class read the sentence and then correct it. My teacher used to do it, too.
Interesting. I've never seen this done before where I live - the more you know! A lot of schools in my area use Joy Alcock for their literacy programme which is quite different from what is seen here.
This is simply insane...the curriculum is entirely tooooooo long for kindergartners! It's no wonder Europe will always outdo American's heady, ambitious goals..foolish people and so-called "educators"!
Hello, everything shown in the video make me feel proud of I chose to be my profession, an English teacher. I really enjoy teaching specially children which is a really rewarding and enriching experience. I wish I could have the chance to teach in an environment where children can really develop their skills. I am an English teacher, CELTA ESOL Certified by University of Cambridge, so if you can give me the opportunity to work I would really appreciate it. Jaime Murcia jaimeomh@hotmail.com
I love the explanation on routines. That is very important for later grades. Great video.

They're reading very well! I'm student teaching Kindergarten, and only like 2 of my students (out of 15) can read on that level

What is the ratio of students to teacher? Is there always an aide in this classroom? That is not realistic in our district.
2 teachers 23 students

Should they know how to read bigger words when they enter kindergarten?
