Silent Night - Mannheim Steamroller (Official Music Video - 1984)

  • Christmas 1984 is the first holiday album the Mannheim Steamroller released, and it remains their definitive work. Chip Davis never strayed from the clean, airy instrumental style that he exhibits here (and earlier perfected on his Fresh Aire albums), but it is here where it all sounded fresh. It's also where he had his best selection of songs, tackling a variety of classic carols like "Deck the Halls," "We Three Kings," "Good King Wenceslas," "Wassail, Wassail," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "I Saw Three Ships," and of course, "Silent Night." Some listeners never found the Mannheim formula that engaging, but anyone who his been captured by one of their holiday records should investigate Christmas 1984, which is where it all began.

My family is fast asleep. Even the animals. I just got off work a bit ago. Im sitting in my livingroom. The only lights that are on are my Christmas lights. And I'm just playing this song over and over. I'm shedding tears. Its the only peaceful moment I've had in a long time. For once I just feel at peace. Thank you. I needed this

I was driving to work at 3:30 in the morning the first time I heard this. It was beginning to snow and I was the only one on the highway. This song gave me chills! I felt like God was in the car with me! Peace washed over me like it never had before. I had a powerful sense of knowing everything was going to be alright.♥️

I am 77 years old now and have become sort of a humbug. But this rendition of Silent Night is like a visit from Scrooges' ghost of Christmas past. It truly conjures up memories of a simpler time and the people we loved who are long gone. And yes, even this old humbug gets a tear in his eye.

Me too. Because there was a special memory in my heart that I can see so vividly to this song a place of trees and lanterns planted for those no longer with us. And to see such a place of somber silence and beauty hurts in a way. A memory Forrest is not the place to play this song because it reminds you that there are some who will not come home for Christmas.

The first time I heard this song was about 3:30 on a cold December morning many years ago. I was driving to work at a dialysis center and it had started to snow. I was playing Christian Radio. This song came on and it was so quiet…no one was on the roads but me. I felt the spirit of Christmas and it lifted my spirits! The snow, the wind, the music, the spirit of the Christ child… I can’t describe it, but it was the most beautiful few moments…

Hauntingly beautiful and peaceful to hear this version. It takes me back to my childhood growing up in the 1980s when everyone in my family was still alive and being a kid was a special feeling having loved ones still around. I just lost my brother this past August and he would be turning 40 years old this month on the 21st. Hearing this makes me tear up and think about the days when I was younger and my family was still around. R.I.P my dear brother love you and miss you so much.

I'll never forget when this came out. My 1st son was only 2 and I was looking for Christmas music I could play for Him too. Boy did this song fill that need. Also the void in my life for something different at Christmas. This is by far( like the others said )the most emotional version of Silent Night ever recorded. I'm not the biggest fan of solo violin, but this violin is perfect for this song and for some reason brings tears of love to your eyes. I remember staying up late that Christmas in 84 watching the snow come down while listening to this song. The Vision and feeling from that night come back to me every time I hear this song! Its still my favorite to watch Snow by!! Every Mannheim CD has some beautiful Songs, Their version of Green Sleeves is heart warming also. I have 3 kids and now 3 grandchildren and they all have heard my playlists of beautiful Mannheim Christmas songs while growing up. Thanks Mannheim for all the wonderful Peaceful Music. +marie55 I so agree. I cry, too - every time. And every Christmas Eve we turn out all the lights except the tree and a few candles and we just listen to Mannheim Steamroller's Stille Nicht. It's always then that Christmas becomes simply an emotion, not an event or a thought or even a prayer. Just an emotion of hope, love, nostalgia and yes, just a touch, of melancholy.

Sadly, this tradition has come to an end in 2019 when I visited last. My heart is heavy and sad now, but I am blessed with the memories and the warmth I was blessed to experience in the past.
