My parents were born in the Azores but I was raised as an American with some Portuguese traditions. I was raised on my grandfather's dairy but never learned to speak Portuguese. The family always made linguisa and marcella but never chourico. Thank you and your family for sharing their recipe.
So crazy my family is from San Miguel and Pico I grew up with linguica and Marcella as well my family members from the Azores also had dairy farms my azorian and Sicilian cited family started a Latin Radio Show in Monterey California in the 1930s and then 30 years later both of those families were mixed
Nancy, I just recently discovered your channel and young lady you are bringing me so much joy and saudade. My parents always made chouriço, every year a large quantity. My parents were from S. Miguel as well, my Dad from Vila Franca do Campo and my Mom, Lombinha da Maia. Their married life before immigrating to Canada was in Santa Maria. I was the knotter of the chouriços. My Mom didn’t have a stuffer, she used a funnel and her fingers. She’d do a dozen, and than we’d tie them. That was hard work! All my aunts and uncles here kept up the tradition. My Mom had two sisters here & a brother, they’d take 4 weekends and go from one house to the next making chouriços. All the children would pitch in and have loads of fun. Now, everyone is gone. No one to carry on the traditions and smaller families….we all just buy at Portuguese grocery stores. Saudade is very real.
Hi Regina. Thank you for sharing your story. Yes, I remember the funnel, I did that as well in my early years with my parents. I'm sorry for your loss🙏🏻 Thank you for watching. Big hug to you🤗
Wow that was so nice to see all your family helping out. It bring back good memories when I was younger and my parents made chourico too. It’s great to keep our Portuguese tradition alive.
Comer um petisco de chourico sem beber um copo de vinho is a big pecado said the senhor padre. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. God bless you all.
I haven’t made chourico in so many years. So much work. My hands hurt so bad from tying the strings. That was always my job. I have to say that my dad made the best toucinho. He scored the belly fat and made a seasoning paste and then would smother it all over. After smoking it you could slice it and fry it like bacon. So good. Also my mom would throw a piece in when making certain soups and stews and of course bean dishes. Great memories now that my parents are gone
Viva a tradição portuguesa és linda por mostrar ❤looks so good Wymmm 😅❤️❤️
Wow Nancy how wonderful to see you and your family making the chouriços I have two Daughters and we make them two my two Son in Laws are Canadians and they love to help us ,I do them almost the same temperos and all,I liked to see the way you tie in fours I tie a loop on every other one and hang by the string in the end it’s the same ,thank you Nancy and your Mom Lucia and family charring.👍🏻❤️❤️

Loved watching you guys making chorico. My girls come over to help & learn how to make it too. Have to keep the tradition alive. Loved seeing your mom and also John & Fatima.
Nancy, I recently found your channel and love it. I've been learning to make more Portuguese dishes, and you've inspired me. My parents are from Faial and I was raised in California. My family as well as my aunts and uncles would also get together and make linguica each year and all the cousins would hang out for three days and have fun. We've been talking about making linguica and my first thought was to see if you had a video so I could get some tips. It brought back a lot of wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing
Hi there and welcome🥰. Thank you for your comment. I'm so happy that you are learning to make more Portuguese dishes. It's all about carrying on the traditions and memories. Big hug xoxo🤗
Sacanas. Imagina. Obrigada por o share. The entire thing was fantastic.
Hi Nancy sou açoreana vivo no Canadá.
I really do appreciate that you guys didn't grind the pork! It's not really churiço unless you see those white cubes in there. My Avó and Avó are real old school we hand stuff the casings and then my Avó smokes them in the smoke house he built with limbs from all their fruit tress. Theirs is by far the best churiço I've ever had! Just broil them until they get a little blackened, or better yet flambe with some alcohol on an assador de barro, with some fresh toasted bread, best comfort food ever!
I'm glad you liked the recipe, it's so nice to see someone who still does things the old way! Makes it extra special. Growing up, we had our handmade smokehouse in the backyard, and the smokehouse used in this recipe/video was also handmade by a family friend. Thank you😊
Thank you Nancy and your mom she is so sweet I am from são Roque is close to we’re your mom use to leave I just felt like making some all so I don’t have a smoker’s have to buy one enjoy Your labour of love thank you so much for the recipe I have a nice weekend
Hi Nancy thank you for the video my mother used to do her sausages the same way even the tying putting four sausage together and I still do it the way you’re showing on the video like my mom used mother was born next town over which is relva next to the airport should have your mom more time in your videos I love the way she speaks 😘

We make the chorizos the same way. Every year but in small quantities We will try the mincing of the garlic We would leave them in pieces then remove them. Loved this video.
I came across your videos today. I watched at least four with the chouriço making bringing back so many memories. I also wondered where was your family was from and when your mom said Arrifes I was so excited I lived in Feteiras the town next to yours. Small world ,keep up the good work. Love it
That cozido looks so good🤤. Eu adore cozido. I do it myself one of my twins love it. I add pigs feed she loves it. Your mom is so sweet. I use my kitchen Aid with the attachment to make my chouriço. 🤗
I wish you had a much much smaller batch version of this as 200lbs is a bit much for me and my family. However, i really did enjoy the video! Thank you for making it.
Great video, thank you for sharing! Just wondering whether you (or your Mum) have an Azorean blood sausage recipe you could share, as I would like to make some?
Thanks for sharing. My family is from the Acores but I was never taught this. I love our traditions. Do you know how to make papo secos? I would love to learn.
Hi, I enjoy your shows lots! Just watch the making of chorizo it brought back fond memories. I grew up in Bermuda of Azorean heritage and married into an Azorean family. In Bermuda there was a rice sausage made like chourico but with rice added. We would love to find a recipe but no one today is familiar with it, not even my husband's family in Massachusetts. Might you know it? Really enjoy your cooking and have tried many of your recipes. Anthea DeSilva
Hi Anthea, Thank you for your comment.😊 The only sausage that I know that has rice in the sausage is called Morcelas... also made with onion, etc. Feel free to email me with any questions you have at diywithnancyg@gmail.com. Thank you so much for watching🥰
Great video. It is hard to find a good accurate recipe like this. When I wrap meat, I wrap in Saran Wrap before butcher paper. I find it prevents the freezer from drying it out over time. I don’t think these last too long in the freezer though.😊
Thank you Curtis.. We make chouricos 2-3 times a year. The quantity made was split between my siblings and I... They don't last more than 6 months in our home. Thank you for your comment😊

Hi Nancy,
Thank you for sharing! Can you make a video on how you make the sweet paprika?
Hi Denise..thank you🥰 Sweet paprika??
@@diywithnancyg1502 yes, the hot pepper mix that you added. Isn't that a mix of chilli peppers and... I don't know red bell pepper?
Hi, I enjoy your shows lots! Just watch the making of chorizo it brought back fond memories. I grew up in Bermuda of Azorean heritage and married into an Azorean family. In Bermuda there was a rice sausage made like chourico but with rice added. We would love to find a recipe but no one today is familiar with it, not even my husband's family in Massachusetts. Might you know it? Really enjoy your cooking and have tried many of your recipes.

Hi Anthea, Thank you for your comment.😊 The only sausage that I know that has rice in the sausage is called Morcelas... also made with onion, etc. Feel free to email me with any questions you have at diywithnancyg@gmail.com. Thank you so much for watching🥰
