I first met Count Arthur in a Little Chef. We chatted briefly about his days in show business and as to whether I wanted peas with my chips. "Make your mind up as I've got a queue as long as my elbow here" he quipped. Although a busy man, he always makes time for his fans. I well remember at the same venue he specifically asked if I could help him look for his pack of Fisherman's Friends. He suspected that these might have fallen into the gravy that he was making. He was most concerned that apart from making the gravy rather lumpy someone might choke and he'd only just opened the packet. "I'm buggered if I'm going to give the bloody things away, the lousy wages I'm getting here" he added. What a star, I really do.
baldrick6509 it’s not often I read a comment that aspires to be just a bit like the man who is known to be as count Arthur. Step back or I’ll knock yer bleeding block off!
Went to see him twice - once at Christmas in Liverpool ("Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without us now would it, eh?") and in his native Doncaster. Both times he appeared with Terry Titter (he is also in this clip) and both times I nearly fell off my chair laughing!
It's not that well known but Count Arthur has invested a significant amount in supporting British Musicals. As he explains, "Oh yes, over the years I must have ploughed hundreds and tens of pounds into Musical shows. Not only do I usually buy a packet of mints at the foyer kiosk but on most occasions I also have a double or thriple scotch at the interval. More often that not I'll also take home a program even though you can't always find them under people's seats or by the lavatory wash basins. On some occasions I've had to shell out for the soddin' things". A true emperorsario, 'erm , empty pest, no not empty pest, I mean temporary stereo, no that's not right, what's up with you. Supporter. A true supporter, that's what I said."
The thing is that now he's got some success (which was the point of doing it in the first place, let's be realistic) we'll get the hipsters who resent him having new fans and will say he's rubbish now. It happens to anyone that has a cult following before they achieve what they set out to do.
The most underrated comedy genius ever.
Anyone else caught between tears of sadness at the song and tears of laughter at the comedy?
There is a beautiful touch of pure comedic genius here.. it's Morecambe and wise .. bottom.. and rising damp... absolutely perfect 👍😀
Stop pushing my finger! Absolutely brilliant. Great live, great on tv, even better on the radio!
