The “drown-proofing” skills I learned in the Navy saved my life about twenty years later while swimming in a lake in central Maine. I was swimming across a narrow spot near a stream outlet when I suddenly realized that I wasn’t going to be able to make it. I didn’t panic, but I was angry that I was going to die like that, a mere 100 feet or so from shore. I had no breath left and knew I was going down when I recalled my training. I bobbed limply up and down by controlling my breathing until I recovered enough to propel myself on my back to shallow water.

    • @prozac1127
      @prozac1127 3 роки тому

If you just stiffen your body you will float up. Only about 3 inches of your head be above water. Try it with snorkel and a safety roap tied to you and a float. Now to get your nose above water you have to fold your knees and kick down then breathe in air and repeat so you your head stays above. Balance with the arms so your orientation is stable. Best of always take a rope and flotation with you

theres a reason they teach kids to float on their back before they learn how to swim. its uncomfortable being so vulnerable and learning how to trust the water and not fight it. plus its important to learn your own body more too and how it works in water and trust yourself as well.

I was at my local pool when I was much younger, I found a random toy at the pool and played with it, this entitled kid said "that's mine" and I refused to give it to him since it was a pool toy owned by the pool, the kid proceeded to leap untop of me and I didn't have the time to take in air I was panicking since he was on top of me, I decided to swim deeper and move to the side to make him stop and luckily it worked. A few years later that kid came to my school.

No one can drown you if you know how to swim, just dive deeper, he'll either lose his grip on you or dive deeper after you where he'll ultimately need to surface to breath. We used to play this drowning trick all summer when we were kids swiming in our river ponds.

I nearly drowned twice. Both times i was quiet. When you're drowning your first instinct is to swim and not to scream. The first time i was able to save my self by swimming vigorously where in i was lucky enough to be able to reach the river banks quickly. If it happened for more than 5 minutes i would have lost strenght before reaching the shore. I was not floating and my head was up and down the water so i was barely breathing. The second time amidst the panic because we were at sea for some reason i had rhe sense to calm down and move less. I figured you are more likely to die when you're panicked. That moment i was able to "sit" while gracefully kicking in the water. My arms and hands were gently waving too. That was the moment i figured we humans can kind of float in the water as long as we stop freaking out. I nearly drowned that day and i wasnt even screaming. I was a teenager with friends so making a seen was really out of the picture. Most of the times a drowning victim never scream for help. For me i was just focused on trying to gasp for air plus i was ashamed people will know i cant swim and that im dying here. I dont know for the others but drowning is a quiet death most of the time.

Drown Proofing was developed in Vietnam when a captured American pilot was hog tied and was being ferried on the river when they came under attack. He was dumped in the river and presumed he would drown. A couple days later a US patrol boat found him still alive. I was told his worse problem was avoiding falling asleep. His incredible survival led the Navy to train all sailers to use the Drown Proofing skill, which is quicker than training all sailers how to swim.

yep, he forgot currents. I freaked out fighting currents in Lake Arenal in Costa Rica a couple of weeks ago. It appeared to be two currents, one near the top and a second a bit deeper. I thought that in the middle of a gigantic artificial lake there would be no currents, but I was so wrong. I was so glad when I got back into the boat. Also, after about an hour the boat literally went to the shore by the same current. And then floated back. Anyways, glad I did, I never have gone swimming in a deep pool of water where there is no shore nearby.

I learn to swim since i was a child in the YMCA, and I remember once when i was a kid, whent to a trip to the beach with firends and familly, our big cousins put a warning on all of us to not swim in a particular place in the beach they sign out with a tree trung and a red plastic bag, saying there was a deep hole there who knows how deep it was, prbably a underground cavern, sink hole or something. But being the curious renegade kid I was I decided to check it out for myself... once they was away in secret i start cheking the area walking directly towards it; the water was shallow, could move walking with the water up my shoulders but all the sudden the floor vanish and i couldn't reach the bottom, was so fast i couldn't inhale enough air and being to sink like a rock, yes i panic but then i said to myself "You know how to swim, calm down and start pedaling up!" which i did and reach the surface took air and start to swim to the shore ignoring the deep waters, right about there all my cousin came diving and rushing to pull me out the water as if i was asking for it, and oh boy! they sculled me harshly saying i could die for being a moron, i was like "am fine! i know how to swim!" but yep, it was terrifying to suddenly be caught in that situation. nobody else swim in that part of the beach after that.
So yes, the biggest problem you face when drowning is exactly that, panicking, you need to calm down and relax then all the rest comes automatically after that.

It takes very little effort to stay afloat when being calm, all people need to learn how to swim and stay afloat, it saves a lot of lives, it's sad when you see people drown in shallow waters very close to the shore just because they can't swim.

The no 1 secret to survival in a drowning incident is " DONT BLOODY PANIC " , if yu do yu will definately drown. . Its also good to know where up for air is as well . I have learnt that yu have about 3 mins of conscious life left once yor lungs are full of water. Yu have very little chance of survival if yu remain in the water, as yu are generaly exhausted , and resigned to yor fate. There is no fear or pain up to this point , but i did feel extreme excitement and eurphoria. But hey dont worry, if yu cant save yorself or be saved, drowning for me was
a surreal, blissful and extreemly peaceful way to die. There is no pain once yor lungs are full of water, and yu get to live every moment of yor life as yu chose, until yu slowly fade into oblivion. If i was to chose a way to die , i think because of my own experience , drowning would be a good option. We cant all die in hospital off chops on morphine .

i almost drowned before and i had to panic to get out the pool i had to try and keep pushing myself up and going crazy till i felt the concrete or whatever of course i was in the deep end i didnt know how to swim but i was holding onto the sides of the pool ..when i was trying to get out i was going back and i tried to speed things up (my dumb self🙃) but my hand slipped btw there was no lifeguard on duty and we had a pool to our selves cause it was for a pool bday party🙄😖 anyways everybody was getting out the pool to get cake keep in mind nobody heard or saw me because they were too focused on the food and they were turned around when i slipped i started to panic and i didnt know what to do i tried yelling for help but i guess i was too scared and i couldnt get the words out my mouth and then when i finally got to the concrete i went to get some food and told my friends and they laughed i was like im serious i thought i was gonnaa die and then i asked them "didnt you guys hear me ?" and they said no and my other friend said she would have helped me if she saw me. The end. p.s i no longer talk to that girl because she moved😭

I sooo thought it was going to be how to get away from someone who is drowning and trying to bring you with them! lol
...but in case anyone wants to know how, in lifeguard training we wer trained to gab your thumbs as hard as you can in their arm pits and 1st dive down and then out(away from them)
--also, we still try to circle at a safe distance(basically waiting till they go under/unconscious so we can drag em out) never realized how that makes us sound more like sharks than lifeguards. HA!

Man... if you are in a place of a person who is drowning... all you feel is to panic and you cannot remove that.. especially if you dont know how to swim and you dont have courage to make yourself float in the water... sad to say but not all people drowning can think of right thing to do.
    Sorry for bad grammar

Well, it's summer, plenty of time to learn to float, it's really not that hard and it's really important. Like when I swim in the sea and I'm tired, I just rest for a bit floating.

What I want to learn is how to save someone what is already underwater and might be unconscious and get the out of the water because it’s really hard when you try to bring your own body plus some else’s to the surface
