Summer vacation is over, but at least you spent your days outside at the pool or the beach. Ah yes, every day swimming. 61 days of fun. 61 opportunities to drown! That’s right! Drowning might be more common than you think. And it looks nothing like you think! Drowning is one of the most dangerous things to happen to the body. In this video, we explore what exactly happens to your body when submerged underwater for too long. We also look at the risks (besides death) associated with drowning. If you’re not a great swimmer, just be thankful you weren’t around during the Salem witch trials, because we also look at drowning as a form of execution. I almost drowned today. I was at the local dam and under the wall there's a gap that if your not careful can suck you under because of the falling water shoving you underneath. I was driving around the water when I accidentally got caught in the current was was sucked underneath. For about 20 seconds it threw me around and I almost got caught underneath when I was finally spit out by the current going the opposite direction and finally resurfaced, it took me awhile to finally be able to properly breath and I was crying 😬, now embarrassing for a 17 years old. I'd also saw a flash of white about 6 seconds in (i think) and my vision was just white until I was out. That was the scariest thing ever for me 😰

The same thing happened to me today. My son was on my back in the pool, we got to the dip, where it seemed to go from 5 ft to 7 or 9. He locked his legs tighter around me and I tried to get him off me. I think I was gulping in water - anyway, I saw it go white too. Time slowed down. The harder I tried to swim up, the deeper down I’d go.
I can’t believe the lifeguards didn’t jump in. I couldn’t even breath air after, GOD saving me, I got to the top of the water.
I almost drowned once, I was younger and we were at the beach and I wanted to go swimming, I didn't know how to and I just sunk in the water. I couldn't breathe I was gasping for air each second it was a really scary moment luckily my mom and aunt saved me just in time, and ever since that day I am still scared of swimming in water

When I was eight I was climbing on the sides of a pool and fell into the deep side I was in the water trying to get out for almost a minute luckily a girl under me was attempting to help me to the surface with my dad saving me and the girls parents saving her I was traumatized and terrified of deep water for a while
One time I almost got dragged out to sea before a hurricane, but thankfully I was saved by the lifeguard.

I've seen a kid (likely around 11 years old) in the deep end of a pool (deep end was 7'8 iirc) and he just started sinking. I kept an eye on him and after a few seconds of him not coming up, I walked over to him and reached my arm to him. He still didn't move so I picked him up and I got the lifeguard's attention. They then took care of the rest. Drowning is scary.

I was close to dying, I lost consciousness so my friends had to pull me up, I didnt know how long I was unconscious but I remember one of my friends running up the hill calling for help while all of them stayed with me, i got up saying you dont have too then they all got surprised or relieved

The surface of the water is too far up, there's no way you could swim there on time, you can't hold your breath any longer. Water fills up your insides, so you get saved. What exactly happens when you technically drowned?
Let's look at the stats. Every year there is 370,000 death due to drowning, and children under five are at the most risk. Drowning was also used as a method of execution for hundreds of years. If you do manage to get saved, you may suffer brain damage if you were underwater for too long. There's also something called Delayed Drowning, where you can speak and breathe normally, but later in the day, your lungs will slowly fill with water. If there's one take away here is that the body really needs oxygen. And drowning is a really easy thing to have happened, but consider this. In New Orleans, 1985, 200 people (half of them lifeguards) were celebrating with zero drowning incidents. At that very party, a man drowned in the pool [SIGHS].
Better always wear those floaties, no matter how good your swimming is. No one is above drowning, it could happen to anyone! No matter how good of a swimmer you are. And look at you, Micheal Felps! And the best thing to avoid drowning besides staying out of water is to always play it safe! Never swim alone! Wear a life vest on a boat! Don't get carried away playing games in the water! Even a breath-holding test could turn deadly! And don't ever think you're to cool for floaties! I think they're coming back in style!

This explains why officials said that Naya Rivera's son looked back and she had disappeared under the water. Clearly she was struggling before getting Josey back into the boat. I wish she'd worn her life jacket. So sad. RIP Naya.
I almost drowned once I had a seizure in the water and there was no lifeguard at the beach I was under for almost 3 minutes lucky some guy noticed me shaking uncontrollably underwater and pulled me to the shore if I was in the water for 1 minute longer I would be dead right now. (I still have epilepsy)

I almost drowned a year ago (I fell from my floutie) , I was fighting for my breath. My cousin was near me. He didn't help me for some reason. There we're many people near me. But none helped me. My cousin laughed like it was some kind of joke. Thank god I've managed to grab my floutie.

I drowned today in a beach. The waves pushed me and I get to go deeper and deeper and no one was near me but I called for help so my friends came to help me and I thank them so much because I’m alive just because of them

So even if you try to close your mouth it will go through your nose or possibly your mouth. Then when it goes in your body fills up your lungs with water then you cant breathe

You have every right to play in the water with friends and have fun, as long as you're being careful. If you, like myself, enjoy being in the water with friends, that's great! It's such a fun experience!
However, on another important note that I must mention, whatever you do, NEVER EVER forcefully shove someone else's head under the water. Even if they insist they're ready, or if it's "just a game", there's no excuse! Having your head shoved in the water by another person (or object), and ESPECIALLY without a breath, is BY FAR one of the most HORRIFYING things ever!! Any kind of diving that YOU do should be under YOUR control, and YOUR control only!!! Remember that!!
I mention all of this because it's happened to me. And in my experience, not to mention with my severe claustrophobia, horrifying is a major understatement!

When I was on a pool training my breathhold for freediving, I nearly drowned after 4 minutes underwater. All started when I felt the contractions at the 2 minute and 45 second mark, I tried to stay calm by enduring the pain, but after the 3 minute 17 second mark, I started to struggle holding my mouth with both hands, 30 seconds later, I hit my limit and I couldn't hold my air any longer, I released all of my air and started to swallow water, My vision was getting blurry, it felt that I was going to die. I was about to black out, but I swam up to surface holding my throat in pain with both hands, and making it in progress expelling the water in my lungs and Gasped loudly for air I needed so much.
The total time I spend underwater was 3 minutes and 52 seconds.
YEAH I KNOW THATS WHY MY COUSIN WHO WAS LITERALLY RIGHT NEXT TO ME SO QUIET BECAUSE SHE DIDNT HEAR MY HELP!!!! I KEPT SAYING

So when I was 5 I really like swimming like really do....and then I was small ok? I was still small for the baby pool...Lol and I go to pool and then *blop* *drowns* I actually didn't mind anything- *dumb 5 year old me* then a lifeguard saw me and I could hear my mom yelling and thankfully that lifeguard saved me
my friend jumped off a bridge with some other friends and drowned yesterday he was under for 7 minutes before people got him up, the fire men got a pulse, but he died a few hours later
I’m almost 30 and decided to go swimming at the beach yesterday for the first time in my life. It was fine at first but as I kept swimming/floating around, the water got significantly deeper and I couldn’t feel the ground anymore, which made me panic and start flailing around. I’m lucky I had 5 of my friends with me because I would’ve drowned for sure.

I almost drowned once / died. I was lucky I was alive actually because in my school we have a swimming pool, I didn’t know how to swim because my teacher was really bad at teaching people to swim. The teacher told me to go at the end of the pool ( Biggest bit of the pool that sinks out more water like it’s deeper ) I was splashing and then I started crying because I was getting pushed down and I was underwater I tried getting out and breathing that was until a student of mine saw me and they helped me get out I fainted because I didn’t know what happened ( they told me I fainted by the way) I thanked them and hugged them but I didn’t see them anymore.. apparently they died but I don’t know because I haven’t seen them for like 5 years and they were supposed to be in my school so yea..

I have swim alone in a tiny pool and I know that you can even drown from a teaspoon of water but my little brother Jackson has fell into the water twice faced first but I made sure to pull him up as fast as possible without hurting him because he's very fragile and only two years old

I panicked for like less then a min and passed out not knowing how to swim but when I remember what happened felt like it happend way faster then it really did it’s hard to exsplain. I was about 5 I fell in the pool no one around tried to grab railing to climb back up my hand slipped off of it by a matter of a inch or so I touched it with the tip of my finger then I stared sucking in water trying to get someone to hear me then after I’ve had enough I layed down underwater defenseless looking up at the sun then I passed out like going to sleep. No one was at the pool by the time I snuck out of the hotel we were staying at it had a pourch and a door. That’s how I got to the pool to begin with anyway after drowning people said my sister came to the pool screamed for help a guy ran out of his hotel and jumped in the pool scooped me up called the police while preforming cpr the ambulance came preformed more cpr I woke up spitting out lots of water then passed out then was put into a helicopter woke up seen the emts face and passed back out then I woke up in the hospital with stuff hooked up all over me freaking out and throwing up water for a week or so. They said I had zero heart beat and was dead when found and wasn’t breathing. I guess it was my lucky day after that I learned to swim and it wasn’t no pool it was Katrina I learned to swim during the worst hurricane ever water was over the roof of our home. Pretty crazy if you ask me . But that’s the story. I remember it.

At holiday weekend I went to the swimming pool with my friends and one of them told me swim to me then I swam and then I almost like almost drowned in an ocean of pain and emotion

Me and my friends went to the beach and I don't know how to swim, earlier that day my mom literally begged me to not swim and told her to not worry, anyway we weren't in a deep place, I didn't notice that water pulled me a little bit away from them, then I turned back and I saw that they were far and I decided that I'm going to go to them then suddenly out of nowhere I don't feel the ground, I kept moving my legs and hands to get up, until i see the top but I can't scream for help, I was panicking so much, I drank a lot of sea water, I genuinely with all my heart believed 100% that I'm going to die in that moment, I was like " that's it? This is where my life ends". And I remembered my conversation with mother, I was amazed. Then I asked God to give me another chance, until I lost hope and gave up I felt sand benieth, and I started moving again, and after every wave I lose the way, I eventialy got out, this whole was a bit more than a minute, but swear it felt like days. After I got out I felt constant pain in my body, especialy the back of my head, which I still feel after 2 months . (Thanks for your time)

I have experience drowning and suffocation quie a bit in my life. and the feeling is really insanely scary and painfull in a non pain felt way. Let me explain: pain is horrible but drowning seems way worse, your body, brain and lungs really let you know that they want oxygen. It feels like armogeddon, try to hold your breath for as long as you can and you will quickly notice how hard it is. Now imagine or try to go a bit further then what you feel is comfortable, and quickly it turns in the worst mightlare imaginable. Not only panic sets in but the hopeless feeling of extreme breathlessness that you might not be able to fix. I honestly might rather die peacefully then experiencing this monstrousity again. And that is me not reaching death or uncounsiousness either. If I had a max of 10 on the scale of how hard it is. I couldn't give less then a 20. It feels inhumane and impossible

I once almost drowned in the swimming pool. I was able to bounce myself up from the floor and cry out the first syllables of my sisters name but to no avail. I didn't know how to swim properly but I then started to move like a dog underwater and this actually helped me to swim to the edge of the pool and get out.

I’ve almost drowned. Me and my friend were “play fighting” in the pool and then I kicked him by accident, then he took it personally… He pushed me under water and sat on my head for about 5-7 seconds. But we pushed me down so hard I had to let him know so I started screaming. I came back up coughing water out and choking and all he did was laughing. Luckily there was a life guard.

i was with my cousins and we went swimming at this river, and i didn’t realize how deep a part of the river was and i went there and i almost drowned…but luckily my oldest cousin (16) saved me just in time and i woke up so relieved

I had the unfortunate experience of witnessing a young guy likely in his late teens early 20's drown to his death in person while on a scuba trip. I was 15 and I did not know what to do. Him and I were trailing from the group, they were far away and were unaware. I was frozen from the shock. I just remember hearing him violent gag and choke and flail his arms, he eventually stopped struggling and sank to the bottom, we were about 60 feet deep too.
I went to swimming in my school trip It was my first time my friend knew how to swim but I didn't I went in the water then It was fine for a moment then I started drowning I tried to put myself together I started to miss my mom I thought I was gonna die I wanted to say goodbye and I love you to her but just then my friend saved me 🎉 I will always be thankful to her😢

I nearly drowned when I was 7 in school 18 And the gym teacher didn't do anything, my friend had to pull me out..
Once I was at a hotel swimming pool and I was at the shallow end I was only 7 years old so I went to the deep end and I put my feet in the deep end and I sunk to the bottom my mum was freaking out because she was watching from the balcony above me and I floated back up and I was gasping for air
When I was 6 I was at the beach and I tried to get the lily pad and my mom and auntie were talking and then my feet did not touch the sand anymore and I was in the water and popped out and did that until my mom saw and I tried to swim to the sand and I survived
I almost drowned in the ocean because the sand bar was much shorter than most of my realized
I nearly drowned twice in my life one tim when i was 4 years old or even younger. I have photographic memory of the bottom of that lake to this day. I also once nearly died because my throat was swelling shut when i was a baby 2 years old. Also have photographic memory of the event. Most people say you cant remember things before 6 or 7 years of age but i told my mother and she says my memories are completely accurate. Drowning is the worst feeling one can have and i broke my arms 6 times (both bones) once i broke both my arms at once....
If i think back on all the injuries i had its incredible.... Survived hepatitis when i was 26 or so. Got addicted to opiates. Just one tragedy after the other....
I was swimming well trying the I got to the edge of the pool and grabbed on and I saw a feather I thought it was a spider I fell under water but my gut instinct told me to kick my legs and arms to get to the surface
Also I tried to save a five year old but I thought he was playing so then I saved 1 second later and um he is alive
I almost drowned one time we are in the swimming pool my friends are in the pool suddenly I slipped and without goggles I see the tiles and suddenly the water pulled me back up, later I was traumatized and back again to standing up to the swimming pool

I almost drowned I went to a pool with my sister and my mom they told me to do a trick and I did it and I fell into the water and I felt like I was gonna drown but I didn’t my sis picked me up
Me and my sister and cousin and her friend went to the beach my cousin is 7 year old and I’m 9 years old and my sister is 19 and we went to the deep and I saw my cousin drowning so I tried to saved her but it got worse because me and my cousin was drowning and I was screaming for help so loud as I can then my sister and a another girl came to save us but it got more worse because we all started to drown then her friend came to saved us but he drown to and someone came to save us all and we are not allowed to go to the deep anymore
Once I nearly drowned so what happened was I was about 4 years old and I was at a beach and I was with my dad than I saw a huge wave and there was no sand to walk on I was trying to go to the wave and I fell and almost drowned till my dad quickly picked me up saving my life

At 0:30, I thought my screen was glitching and doing that thing where the video stops in between spaces.
This isn’t really scary for me but I remember one time I was playing in a lakeshore I remember the water getting deeper and when I continued walking eventually the floor below me just disappeared I was in the water for at least 2 seconds till I somehow got back up to the floor. I didn’t think of it much at the time but I realize how easily I could have died that day. I was about 7 or 8 at the time

I almost drowned once when my brother pushed me off a dock at the lake and he held on to me with all his weight, he was heavier, and I couldn’t get to the surface and the ground at the bottom of the lake was really slimy and I hurt him so much so I could manage to get back up and it was so scary but it was so worth it because I didn’t get in trouble for hurting him
