Such a beautiful, funky, soulful and jazzy song. Never gets better than Steely Dan. You can see why so many classic Hip Hop joints sampled them. RIP Walter Becker
Have been a music lover all my life...working on year #71 as I write this. There are too many great bands to list here...there're all special in their own ways. Steely Dan however, has reached a level of perfection that even the best bands usually find very elusive. The level of talent with regard to composition and arrangement, combined with such gifted musicians, is spectacular to say the least! For well over 40 years now, they've been at the top of their game. Take it all in my friend...it never gets old.
Rusell Shaw ...”Denny” Dias, not Danny...probably a SpellCheck correction. But he was the original founder of the band that Becker & Fagen took over....
"Drink your big Black Cow". A Black Cow can be a root beer or Coke float (with ice cream) that has chocolate syrup added. Or it can be a mixed drink with Kahlua, half and half, and Coke. Either way...nummy! Love this song! Some of their other more recognizable tunes are, "Hey Nineteen", "Josie", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Deacon Blues". Enjoy, you have very good taste!
Bravo!! Yesssss!! You GET IT! I'm so glad you were able to have an open mind and soak in Steely Dan's beautifully crafted amalgam of lyrical sound. I hope you to more reactions of their music.
He got the rhyme scheme! abba, not the usual abab or aabb. And the whole groove of the song. I love watching people discover the joy of great music, their pleasure is infectious.
I can’t help but think back in the day when you gauged the the quality of how good your speakers sound by playing a Steely Dan album through them, their music was so clean sounding .....Dirty Work is one to check out
It's awesome how new generations get Steely Dan. My daughter loves hip-hop, I've heard some great music from her playlist. And I told her where some of the original samples started. She went back to the originals, adding to her life's experiences. Makes me feel good😊😊🌴😊😊 great video 👍👍👌👍
Your reaction reminds me of me - 42 years ago (minus the hip hop reference, as it was just about to be even invented). The Dan are similar, but unlike anyone you've hear before or since. Unmistakable. This band = "So Outrageous". I really enjoyed your fresh take on a classic.
That electric piano gets me everytime! This is so beautiful! One of my favorites for many years. I love to see you digging it! They are masters! I have a giant smile right now!
This takes me back to...well damn I'm old. Hardly anyone reacts to SD and I really enjoyed listening to this with you. Your commentary is intelligent and appreciated. They are one of a kind. Thank you for sharing your enjoyment! Peace Subscribed!
So satisfying to watch someone raise on another genre of music honestly react to this Steely Dan. Top drawer musicians and genius writing have a way of crossing over :)
Aren't you glad you found the real thing? Been listening to all this since it was released since I was 12, you have to hear much more, start with Royal Scam Album, and listen to the title track first, no one has listened to it YET, it is a Masterpiece like the entire album as well as AJA. So Outrageous!!!
@Lee Spicer It's a good thing I have you to guide me how would I make it through, he asked I answered, why is it an issue for you? I thought comments were open, if he wants to delete it that is his prerogative. I am calm are you? As far as interpreter yes, and while we are on the subject why don't you enlighten me on what a Citizen is.
Such a great song. Once again Steely Dan: Smart, topical, cynical, relatively harmonically complex (for R&R), with a tight, fun groove. As I've said before on another reaction, it's the tail of a man that loves a pro, who is too caught up in the life to let go. Back in the day here in NYC the pro's used to stroll 9th and 10th avenues from Greene St. in NoHo, past the Convention Center on 34th to about 48th. They would center themselves around 26th Street, the Jacob Javits Convention Center, and on 42nd Street between 9th and 7th. That was the hub. Rudy's Bar and Grill is located off of 9th avenue between 44th and 45th. In there pro's, musicians, actors and writers would mingle. By the way, when anyone says "sample" you actually mean "stolen". Her book of remedies is her book of tricks and their numbers, their likes and dislikes. And yeah, "Drink your big Black Cow": Chocolate milk, root beer (or coke) and bourbon. Sometimes ice cream, sometimes evaporated milk. "Reelin' In The Years", "Ricki Don't Lose That number", "Hey Nineteen", and try the songs from Donald Fagen's "The Nightfly" album. They're all good there too.
@JAMFamily You're corrrect, "Deja Vu (Uptown Baby) sampled the main riff to "Black Cow". Steely Dan requested an advance payment of $115,000 as well as 100% of publishing royalties for use of the sample. Easy money...
I love seeing anyone's, but especially your, first-time reactions to the incomparable Steely Dan. You're so humble man--and the way you find the words to describe the song and relate your feelings about it are really cool. Keep enjoying these amazing artists. Also, you may want to check out 'Caves Of Altamira' (The Royal Scam album), and 'Home At Last' (Aja album). I think you'll really like them.

@@mustafahajj Oh, the problem with not having live conversations . . . I wasn't being critical of him at all, just lamenting about the decline of pop-music in general. Beautiful and insightful analysis of one of the best songs of the best band ever. It looks like you were nearly moved to tears as I have frequently been listening to them.
They certainly produce brilliant musicality and imagery in their output. I’m impressed by your thoughts on hearing these SD tunes for the first time. I never delved that deep into their lyrics but thoroughly enjoyed their music in my high school and college years. Thank you.
I was a teenager growing up in Chicago when that came out in the summer of 1977, just brings back such great memories, we had some really good music to grow up on, what a blessing!!
What’s cool is even though I’ve listened to most of all of their popular songs, there’s still a lot for me to experience from the Dan. All of these reaction videos also allows people like me to get into music I’d passed up because I was to young to have enjoyed them when they first released all of their work. Kudos! BTW I had just turned into a teenager in the late 70’s and Rock & Roll was what I was really into. 🙂
I grew up listening to Steely Dan on FM and I still find new things to love. And I really enjoy your reaction vids, so thanks, man. I have always assumed that it was a cocktail...But I think it's cool that not really knowing doesn't change things much. It's that cold "and get outta here" packs the wallop. Thanks again.
Yes, Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell are the most prolific composers in rock history. They each have DOZENS of brilliant songs. You could do weeks of your show with just these 3 artists. Like Steely Dan, Joni brought in many iconic jazz players to record the music - her lyrics are genius. Start with "Help Me" from the Court and Spark album.

Great to see someone appreciate and be affected so much by Steely Dan. They are masters, like you say. Becker/Fagan insisted on bringing in the best/most right musician for every song. The result is perfection!
Steely Dan's finest hour right here. I'm happy to say I own Aja on vinyl. If you haven't had a chance to play the entire album yet, give yourself and your stereo a treat. This entire album is gold.
They have a ton of great songs. AJA was released over 40 years ago. How many bands are there today that 40 years from now people will look back and say that their music is as timeless as Steely Dan?
The Aja album is perfection.
I hesitate to encourage substance abuse, but the first time I heard AJA I had just taken MDMA. Instant lifetime love
Indeed.
No lies detected.
FYI the (Japanese?) model who's face is barely visible on the album cover died a few years ago.
Absolute pure perfection......MASTERPIECE

They were the kings of studio production. Their recordings are delicately articulate and every sound is in it's own perfect space.
To me, Steely Dan's music is like a rose carved out of crystal; beautiful in it's hard, cold perfection.
“I always leave with more than I came with.” Almost brought tears to this looooog time Dan fan. “Can’t get enough of Steely Dan.” 🥰
Some real groovey tunes on Donald Fagan’s ‘Night Fly’ CD.
