When his mother and I first got together, he and I bonded over Power Rangers because he hadn't known any adults that knew about or were fans of the franchise up to that point. Your seasons helped us go from strangers to father and son, and I thank you for your involvement in that.

It boosts your mental acuity and your physical power. I think pink boosts all categories as well but it doesn't boost it as well as red. Black may be the strongest physically. SPD also has the monster, Shorty, who yells about how much he hates empty buildings when he starts smashing them. Given how many Rangers we see return in later years, I don't think any of them ever fully "quit." They might be retired, but they're always willing to help out in a pinch. Lightspeed Rescue made it officially canon that the skills/knowledge of piloting the Zords are tied into the powers. Mack is the strongest Red Ranger. As much as I dislike Operation Overdrive, and I'm NOT a fan of the civilian powers, Mack was able to run up to a giant monster, un-morphed, leapt high into the air, and sliced it in half using the Excelsior sword.

Red does not mean you're the leader in Sentai, it just means that you're the poster boy.
I always wondered how all the rangers wound up in one giant cockpit in a Megazord when all the zords are different body parts with their own cockpits.
