Simply one of the most beautiful pop songs ever written. Ray Davies - brilliant lyrics, magical melody. Dave Davies - iconic guitar lines.
I can't say it enough, seriously underrated band.
Underrated by whom?? Not those who count!!
Sunny Afternoon and Tired of Waiting for You 🔥 🔥
I love this song! Waterloo is in London, on the River Thames (pronounced "TEMS"). Waterloo underground is one of the subway/tube stations.
and in on the Bridge you can see the sunset in the west
"(l'm not) like everybody else" is the favorite song of Dave Davis and myself 🔥🎉 also check out "the village green preservation society" 🔥 🔥🎉
The Kinks are rock music's best kept secret. The only band with a catalogue that matches (at least) their more famous contemporaries (Beatles, Stones, Who, etc).
(i wanna be like)"Superman" 🔥 and "I'm a apeman" (fun song)🔥 for a deeeeep track a fan only favorite is "ducks on the wall"
One of the most beautiful English folks songs ever written.
I am a 15 year old and and i am walking to the local Youth Club on a warm summer evening back in 1967. As i walk past the houses i hear " Waterloo Sunset " blasting out through an open bedroom window, from someones record player. A memory i have kept until this day. This song is timeless.
The Kinks have great melodies.
You can hum the vocal lines.
Geniuses.
I could hear the 60’s right away . Good memories, thanks Biz.
thats true lol
I love this Kinks song, very melodic and sweet. Now that I've heard it, I'll be humming it for days 😵💫 According to Wiki, Waterloo is a district of London on the north side of the Thames River and the bridge crossing it is called Waterloo Bridge.
I love the bands of the "British Invasion" era - Kinks,Animals, Who, Small Faces, and more - so much talent, creativity and innovation. We owe these guys so much. 1963-1973 is my favorite era of music.
BTW- I just sent you an email with links to two songs by "Them'" another band form this era which featured Van Morrison as their lead singer. Iconic songs by a brilliant band.
A great comment, but i would like to correct you on one thing, the Waterloo district is on the South side of the River Thames. Part of the Borough of Lambeth.
It might not seem important, but Londoners are a funny bunch, and after listening to this song since it was first released, those of us born in the area felt quite proud about it back then.
@@daneelolivaw602 Thank you for the correction, I really didn't know much about it. I am envious that you grew up in London -what an amazing city with so much history. Of course like any city, I'm sure there are plently of problems along with that - cheers!
Waterloo station is very much in South London, The best song ever about London from the best English band ever. Never quite had the recognition in the USA they should and could have had because they wrote from and for a British perspective just like the Jam did a few years later.
The imagery painted in this song is amazing.
I agree
Might not be your favorite, but one day you may hear it unexpectedly... and just at the right moment. And that's when you realize: this song has a unique magic
its not my favorite by them but the magic is undeniable
Kinks are amazing.... so many eargasmic moments
In 1986 this song was still on the jukebox in London. Have you done “All Day and All Of the Night”? It’s Punk Rock 10 years early! If so, maybe something different… “She’s Got Everything” has everything, including Dave Davies’ noise guitar solo, the great Nicky Hopkins, and ‘My Woman From Tokyo’; and “I Gotta Move” has Dave Davies and guest Jimmy Page intertwining guitars, 5 years before Led Zeppelin.
Yes, Waterloo is a district in central London, part of the London Borough of Lambeth. It's located in the Waterloo and South Bank ward, about 1 mile east of Charing Cross and next to the River Thames. Waterloo is known for its cultural attractions, including the Old Vic theater, South Bank Centre, Sea Life Aquarium, and the London Eye. It also has many restaurants and pubs.
Don’t forget the National Theatre
Also a bit less expensive than on the other side of the Thames when it comes to restaurants, etc.
More goodies from The Kinks: "Celluloid Heroes", "Sleepwalker", "I Wish I Could Fly (Like Superman)", "National Health". Saw The Kinks on their "Low Budget" tour, a great concert.
I can't remember if Ray Davies has confirmed or denied it, but "Terry & Julie" are widely assumed to refer to Terence Stamp and Julie Christie, two of the most iconic and beautiful British actors of the era.
Top Shelf. Hit Catch Me Now I'm Falling. Celluloid Heroes and Live Life... 😎😎
The Kinks have hits galore. You should check out The Troggs!! Strangely forgotten, start with Wild Thing and I Can't Control Myself. Incredible!!
i reviewed wild thing already
@@watchbizmatikBut have you heard Sam Kinison tearing it up doing it his way ?! 😂
That's one of my favorite Kinks songs. For your next one, I recommend "Tired of Waiting for You".
One of the best British Invasion groups....PERIOD. My fave song is "Come Dancing".
"This Time Tomorrow" is a fantastic Kinks song.
I was br in 1963, in London (Finsbury Park) and this song is so evocative of those days, when London was a kinder, friendlier place in my recollections.
Sitting here shedding a tear ! ... for a lost time, a lost City, a lost Country and a lost Way of Life ! ... in a lost World. So sad the music died !
"Sunny Afternoon" is a must! It evokes a sunny afternoon so well and has lyrics that are witty and tongue-in-cheek, yet about a serious subject, tax! It's another masterpiece! :)
When someone asks you to pick your top 10 songs I struggle, it changes so much. But this song is the one constant that makes it every time.
Can't go wrong with the Kinks
Waterloo Sunset is something special. 👍
Low Budget is a great one. An excellent example of Ray Davies and The Kinks strong social commentary chops.
Waterloo is a small area of central London, on the north bank of the Thames, (the river in the song). There's a major railway terminus there and it's also a majorTube (underground) station. It's also right in the heart of London so it tends to be busy. There's also a 'Waterloo Bridge there too, alongside the railway bridge. When the song was written London was still grimy, industrial, coal burning. It wasn't an aesthetically pleasing view but Ray Davies saw the beauty, particularly when love and/or a beautiful sunset are involved. Beatifully simple, yet so poetic and with wonderful harmonies! A truly classic pop song! One of the UK's favourites! :)
Its London by the river, I've lived there, it was nice.
I WANT TO FLY LIKE SUPERMAN 🚨
KINKS BABY...legends
they are fire
An ode to an England that no longer exists
They are the best. Please check out the live version of Celluloid Heroes, the one from Switzerland I believe, pink album cover. It's my absolute favorite Kinks. Actually that whole album is SO good. You have good taste, really not a lot of us Kinks fans out there!❤
Great song and band❤
A wonderful autobiographical song about sunset over the Thames by Waterloo Station and about Ray Davies' friends, actors Terrence Stamp and Julie Christie
Greatest rock band ever. Review the tune Motorways by The Kinks please if you haven't already. Peace from Canada keep pushing Biz.
Waterloo is in area of London, on the River Thames with a main line train station that serves the South of England Named after the victory at the battel of Waterloo 1815 and the defeat of Napoleon by Wellington and the Allies
One of my fave Kinks tunes.
You Really Got Me, All The Day & All of the Night, Tired of Waiting for You & their novelty song Lola. All better.
Classic. "Waterloo Sunset" weaves so much into a short few minutes, the harmonies, the sorta sloppy sounding drums that really aren't, the chords bearing down in the bridge. Ray Davies urban sixties daydream watching people on the street from the window. The Kinks influence on Van Halen is apparent on this one. For a gritty sixties banger from The Kinks, check out "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" from 1966. Also check out "Stop Your Sobbing" and "Where Have All the Good Times Gone", later covered by The Pretenders and Van Halen. And for a straight ahead rocker check out "Victoria" and "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman" for some disco. Most everybody cut a disco record at some point in the seventies.
The song Celluloid Heroes from the Kinks will not disappoint !!!!
Reminds me of my childhood
A Waterloo sunset is a sunset seen in the London area of Waterloo.
Do an album review of the Kink's album "Arthur", or just listen to it on your own. You won't regret it!
That guitar tho
beautiful song.
As you know by now it’s in London and a great song by a great band
The Pink Floyd´s David Gilmour was asked if there was any song other than his own he would liked to have written, sort of saying no, but stopped himself and said Waterloo Sunset by the Kinks,.
Great song,great reaction
thank you
Not only is this the Kinks best song, to my mind it’s the best song of the sixties, yep, even better than the best of the Beatles, and I love the Beatles. But Waterloo Sunset is just a work of absolute genius. Melodic, melancholic and just beautiful.
They were great
🌅
God save the Kinks!
Do SUNNY AFTERNOON!
☘️🚬
😎👌💖
This song gives me a Beatles vibe. I'm like you, not best or most beautiful. I do like it though.
You realize there was hit British music in the 60s other than the Beatles, right? Paul McCartney said Ray Davies beat him to writing this melody. It’s as good or better than any Beatles song, especially lyrically. You just don’t fully appreciate it after hearing it just once. It’s on Rolling Stone’s 2020 list of greatest 500 songs of all time at #14.
