This is a great example of Yuzo Koshiro's mastery of PSG sound chips. Notice how the longer notes have warbling pitch, and each "instrument" has a notable attack to it. He really was the master.
Once you go through the game, it's kinda strange how serious Sonic's face was, given the first three zones (green hill, bridge and forest) light mood, except perhaps for the boss stages. Happy and innocent tunes play as you dash through unworried and save those fluffy puppies. Labyrinth's zone builds a little up your concentration with its air bubbles, but it still feels like an exploration. Then you get to Scrap Brain. Kid's imagination back then was sufficient to immerse the player into the heavy atmosphere of a grey metal city, announcing Robotnik's machines are a much more serious threat than presented before. A dread vision of the future if you don't go on beating him. Finally, Sky Base shows us Scrap Brain's theme is so damn good that the addition of continuous rain and crackling bolts over your head are enough to announce apocalypse is at hand and it's up to you to save the world. Now that's a strong game rhythm. Heck of a design.
Me and my brother felt such an amusement every zone we advanced. The sms was our first videogame and this game came with it. Everything was so colourful and the soundtrack is spectacular even today. This version stands on its own against it's big brother
this is one of the things that caught me as a child, sonic is serious unlike mario and them dystopian vibes made for a gripping story. the whole atmosphere i found moody.
Classic sonic games have a way to telling a simple, but epic story without saying anything on screen. Sonic 2 and 3/Knuckles have an amazing storytelling between zones. Its so good i feel the atmosphere everytime when you fall at lava reef and death egg lits up. Epic!
This sounds amazing..... I get the feeling of journey's end from this song. At the same time as you are facing the final fortress, song's atmosphere also reminds player how far they have come.
Same here. Master System was my first console, Sonic 1 my first game. When I think about how I felt during playing this game as a child, I get tears in my eyes. Especially because of the music.
I like how both this and Labyrinth Zone got different songs in this version of Sonic 1. I've gotta say the 2nd act of this zone felt more like a true labyrinth than the actual Labyrinth Zone.
Me too! I wonder why we had the same music for Green Hill Zone in the Genesis and Game Gear version. I noticed the music for the bonus stage sounds like it could go well with spring yard. Is there a reason we should keep the bonus stage? We could have the ending sign land on continue for an extra continue (I know there is not a sign for an extra continue in the first Game Gear game, but there is in the second Game Gear game).
@@bennel3588 The reason most of the music was different was because Yuzo Koshiro did the music for the game instead of Masato Nakamura, whose music in the genesis version was based actual songs from the band Dreams Come True.
Listening to this just whisks me back to that level... what was it? Flying outside in the rain and thunder... the final stage. I must've only been 5 or 6 or something. It stirs something deep inside somehow; words fail to fully capture the essence of that feeling. If I want to remember what it was to perceive the world through the innocent eyes of a child, I have but to listen to this track. Just how many transformations does a person experience in the span of a lifetime?
Totally right. I'm pretty young, so I played this game in 6th grade when I had just gotten into emulating games on my tablet. I couldn't find a decent genesis emulator at the time, but then I saw a downloadable version of sonic the hedgehog for game gear, and me, thinking it was a port, downloaded the game. Little did i know I would come to love this version more than the genesis. I still remember playing this level on the bus when it was pouring like hell outside. Fit the atmosphere so well.
Iridescent Garchomp It's kind of interesting to me the way that technology now has become so much more prolific and mainstream than it used to be. I didn't even have a PC until I was 11, but I also took to emulation pretty quickly afterwards (back in the days of dialup, ugh). I'd like to think that some games have a certain timeless appeal, though. As an actual game, I much prefer Sonic 3 & Knuckles (I still think it's pretty much the best Sonic game) but the nostalgia of being taken back to such a young state of mind is something I can't adequately describe. Sometimes the simple memories can turn out to be important ones.
I know the feeling, with dial-up internet, lol. That computer was slow as hell, and I all i remember was being 4 years old and playing frogger 2 on it. But, yes, I agree. So many memories of this game, especially the Master System version. It was the first console game I had ever completed, despite having been a gamer since 1984/1985 before then. Atari 2600 games can't exactly be completed though. I loved Sonic 1 on the Master System and I spent what time I could on the rare times I got to play the game between my studies to improve and finally complete it. A timeless classic.

This set up the atmosphere very nicely, with the lightinng and the enemies, it meant that you knew you were nearing the end of the game, nearing the final boss. It was amazing. i just didn't find it with the newer version.
Chibi Likes Cookies well, the game gear version is a masterpiece, of course it's better. that's the reverse for sonic 2, the game gear version of sonic 2 is horrible (except the musics who are awesome)
I like this version of Scrap Brain Zone music better. It's nowhere near as scary as the Mega Drive Version. Makes one wish this Master System theme was used for the Mega Drive version, I'll bet.

The master of the master system
I agree
Streets of Rage games also show this. Some of the most PSG heavy soundtracks on the Genesis
You're probably referring about vibrato, and I completely agree!

Música muy chula buen ritmo
Played this on my master system back in the day, the music is still as epic as the first time i heard it!
This set up the atmosphere very nicely, with the lightinng and the enemies, it meant that you knew you were nearing the end of the game, nearing the final boss. It was amazing.
i just didn't find it with the newer version.
Nostalgia a mil.
The 16 bit version is less "sad and menacing". Just adding better sound effects doesnt improve it. And two words about this one: Yuzo Kozhiro.
What if I said that I like the Game Gear version of Sonic 1 more than the Megadrive version?
Chibi Likes Cookies well, the game gear version is a masterpiece, of course it's better.
that's the reverse for sonic 2, the game gear version of sonic 2 is horrible (except the musics who are awesome)
lecorbak I like Sonic 2 game gear... I really do prefer the 16-bit version tho. But I prefer the 8-bit soundtrack

sonic 2 game gear is in my top 3 shitty sonic games with sonic spinball game gear and sonic heroes
lecorbak Okay

you should try asterix on master system, it's better than sonic 2.
I played this when I was 5 and that was 1999, wow it really made my childhood.
ya know people often forget this was on the "master system" as well as the game gear and also this came out AFTER the one on megadrive
I like this version of Scrap Brain Zone music better. It's nowhere near as scary as the Mega Drive Version. Makes one wish this Master System theme was used for the Mega Drive version, I'll bet.
god damn i love this song.
thanks for the upload!
Might wanna come check out the new Sonic Scrap Brain remix I just made. I think you'll enjoy it.
I want to go back to this time :|
Pretty ominous compared to the Scrap Brain Zone theme of the Genesis version. Quite dark when heard at Sky Base zone act 1.
Man, I've been listening to these awesome songs forever now, and I just noticed I haven't subscribed yet! Well, that's fixed.
i agree with this 100%. :ds:
Bu müziği 1991'den beri çok seviyorum ❤❤❤
Türk selam
Thanks for having a longer version
You might be interested in listening to the remix I just made.
No thanks
Does anyone else think this song is better than the Mega-Drive Version ? It just seems a little more atmospheric.
Never heard this one, but I'm glad I found it. I had never played this version of the game past the Bridge Area.
this gives me a Ys vibe makes sense since this soundtrack also by yuzo.
best video game in the world
I didnt know yuzo wrote the music holy shit I always liked this far better than genesis, now I know
Why is the best music always in the hardest level?
