Chickens for centuries a very good at roosting and in nature this involved jumping, flying up into the trees and gliding into other trees to avoid predators. Many don't think Chickens as flying birds because they don't fly long distances. Don't think chickens are a bunch of chickens. They can get quite vicious if they when need be.

as far as i understand, every bird species of today has once partially lost the ability to fly then re-gained it later, once all the flying birds had gone extinct during the K-Pg event due to the loss of tree-top environment and they filled the flying niche
Study shows the "Ninja run" actually generate more air resistance than regular sprinting.... so that is why you don't see it on Olympics... Plus human arms are not as effective as bird's wing when steering. (Ostrich sometimes does use their wings like air brakes/oars/rudders to turn)

You shoulda mentioned the giant moa. This bird was 12 feet tall and weighted 500 lb, and used to run around NZ some 800 years ago until the Maori killed them.

More or less, emus and ostriches have different ways of incubating their new born offspring and emus are farmed for their meat and oil. Ostriches for their feathers. Ostriches also have large eyes. Just from a quick google search, dunno if it's true.
They are kinda the same They are cousins I'm not sure what the specific differences are, but the ostrich is bigger and they live in different continents, so even if they have a common ancestor they evolved differently

My umbrella cockatoo is flightless by choice. She's middle-aged and set in her ways (I adopted her 9 years ago). She picks her feathers and seems to intentionally chew off her primary flight feathers. Even in situations where she would be able to get some lift she chooses to walk or yell for human transportation. She is extremely lazy and dramatic so I have to assume this is a conscious decision she's making. I love her.

Because an evolutionary trait was successful in breeding. Similar to how some people don't need to work, yet keep breeding, and some people are genius' and don't breed. Traits that carry on through generations of survival, become dominant, not because they are valuable for survival, because they lucked out and survived.
Every time someone mentions a dodo bird, it reminds me of a short clip someone made of a dodo jumping off a cliff to feel like flying once in it's life before it dies. It was so sad.
