Though the common ancestor of all modern birds could fly, many different bird species have independently lost their flight. Flight can have incredible benefits, especially for escaping predators, hunting and traveling long distances. But it also has high costs: consuming huge amounts of energy and limiting body size and weight. Gillian Gibb explores what makes birds give up the power of flight.

Other birds "swim" in the air, penguins can "fly" underwater.
Lol
air is a fluid so this is quite right
No way, good call
whats interesting is there are birds that utilize the same idea by mixing it. they start in the air, dive into the water to catch their prey and fly back up

*Chicken has left the chat*
Roosters are named after what they do best.. roost. Chickens for centuries a very good at roosting and in nature this involved jumping, flying up into the trees and gliding into other trees to avoid predators.
Many don't think Chickens as flying birds because they don't fly long distances.
Don't think chickens are a bunch of chickens. They can get quite vicious if they when need be.
Chickens can fly , I just test recently and they flew away but on very low and short distance only
Chickens can fly, albeit their flights are very short.
Chickens *can* fly but they can’t fly far, which is the reason they don’t fly away in your yard

Flightless birds' responses to predators:
Cassowary - I will gut you and then punt your corpse into next Thursday.
Ostrich - Only part of me you're eating is my dust.
Kiwi - What kind of dipping sauce would you like?
Tbf, several species of kiwi are quite capable of defending itself. They have powerful kick and sharp claws and with a bit of bluff, can even repel stoat.

Just one question; Since the birds can quickly lose their ability to fly in a few generation in absence of threats, how fast can they regain that ability?
That's an interesting question
as far as i understand, every bird species of today has once partially lost the ability to fly then re-gained it later, once all the flying birds had gone extinct during the K-Pg event due to the loss of tree-top environment and they filled the flying niche
I don't think that ever has happened
It might be possible but it'll take much longer than how they lost the ability since there should be a much longer process for anatomical changes...
Thet can't
Evolution giveth, evolution taketh away
Facts in Motion I like your videos
No evolution occurred it's all creation and have a creator of life it's God
@@jasonni183 yes, evolution is as saying the earth is flat. Everyone believed that previously. Or that the universe had no beginning. All proven false and it correctly stood in the Quran. I get so sad that everyone believes evolution is true (yes "believes" because they're deluding themselves and not actually thinking about it) and then in a hundred years maybe when it's proven false everyone will think "how could they think evolution is true?" That's how people now think about people which thought the earth was flat. And evolution doesn't even explain where we come from. We also have DNA repair mechanisms, so how can errors lead to better change? Do people really think that we created ourselves? Can something nonexistent create itself? I hope they'll all be guided inshallah. Also, DON'T start a discussion with me now. Think for yourself.
@@Cyber_One+ No, and no. We have found fossils of our ancestors. We have found evidence within the plates of the earth. Evolution is real, whether you like it or not.
@@kayelynnphelps8676 No it's not, I said I don't want to discuss this, because every single time it starts from the beginning all over again with the same wrong claims. And that's no evidence, the fossils say nothing, and they even have to be manually reconstructed, because only tiny little fragments of them are actually recovered. And guess what? They completed a human skull fossil with the help of a chimpanzee skull. Yeah. Think about that. I'm constantly thinking about this and evolution is most definitely wrong. I'm not going to say anything anymore. God gave you the entirety of knowledge to the palms of your hand. Use it to find the right way. This is your one and only chance. You came here because you wanted paradise, this is the test. If God were to give direct evidence, there'd be no test and no paradise. Hope you'll get guided soon.

0:28 That has got to be the most pissed off looking bird I have ever seen.
Well it the most deadliest bird ever and it my favorite bird
Ever see one in real life? No, because you’d probably be dead. they will maul you like a freaking tiger with claws that are probably twice as sharp. They are the most dangerous bird on the planet.
Flarbargason I saw one in real life at the zoo
【InsertNameH3re】 fair point, so have I. But those are far more docile because they were born in captivity. If they just dropped a wild one in the little fields you see them in (or at least where I saw them) they would definitely get out and go on a rampage.
Just saw it literally days ago when I visited Sydney zoo! It looks the same lmao
4:04 Just like Naruto!
Study shows the "Ninja run" actually generate more air resistance than regular sprinting.... so that is why you don't see it on Olympics... Plus human arms are not as effective as bird's wing when steering. (Ostrich sometimes does use their wings like air brakes/oars/rudders to turn)

"Never try to declare a war on flightless birds" -Australia
After watching this video about flightless bird,
now I wonder if they can make a video about Platypus...
also wondering, what's the different between emu and ostrich? I thought they kinda same...
More or less, emus and ostriches have different ways of incubating their new born offspring and emus are farmed for their meat and oil. Ostriches for their feathers.
Ostriches also have large eyes.
Just from a quick google search, dunno if it's true.
Ostriches are idiotic
Australians haven't lost a war to ostriches yet
You mean 'Perry' 😌
They are kinda the same
They are cousins
I'm not sure what the specific differences are, but the ostrich is bigger and they live in different continents, so even if they have a common ancestor they evolved differently
This channel is just all of my childhood questions
Always enjoy your videos 😀 ,allthough this one is pretty common knowledge i think:)
Very interesting !
You shoulda mentioned the giant moa. This bird was 12 feet tall and weighted 500 lb, and used to run around NZ some 800 years ago until the Maori killed them.
For real?! A 500 pound bird?! That's preposterous!
