    What i wan't to point out is, Day of the Dead is not the "Mexican version" of Halloween, and is not a day for the kids as Halloween might be. They don't necessarily get candy. It is a day to celebrate the time our family members were alive. To connect with our memories of them.

    I feel like jimmy was disrespectful in this interview, día de los muertos is a tradition deeply rooted in the Mexican culture and while I understand that it may seem weird to him because it is something he maybe is not familiar with, he seemed to kind of make fun of it but I think Gael handled it very gracefully.

    • @TheBlackLotus

      Which is weird because being Jewish like Kimmel is, there is also a big death positive culture in Judaism. I would know I grew up religious and culturally Mexican and both sides display a big respect for death and mourning in a healthy way.

    Día de los Muertos it's such a beatiful, brightful celebration. As Gael said, it's about celebrating life, remembering the loved ones that aren't here and face the fact that life will eventually become death. As mexican, I must admit that this is my favorite cultural celebration.

    Having a special day where you go pay respects to the deceased members of your family is a really beautiful thing that is also done in other cultures/countries . There are similar festivities in Europe and Asia. I think it's important to acknowledge and celebrate these natural, inevitable life cycles and it's unfortunate that it's not more of a thing in the US.

    • @vipertooth123
      @vipertooth123 7 років тому +3

      hmm, it's more than paying respect, is more like a party, a family reunion with your deceased relatives, and because they can only come here one day of the year, you get them food and other stuff that they liked (cigarettes, alcohol, favorite flowers).

    • @Catherinenietom
      @Catherinenietom 7 років тому +3

      yeah, here in Mexico It´s not that solemn. People go to graveyards and decorate the tombstones with flowers and food, they also play music and pay respect and everything but in a joyful way. Actually, there is also a tradition of writing "calaveritas" to your family and friends. "calaveritas" are a small poetry about how you are gonna die and what the Dead is going to say to you when she takes you, but in a very playful and ironic way, and on the day of the dead you gift the "calaverita" to the person you´re talking about.
      Even there are calaveritas contests around the country. I guess thats the best example about how we live the day of the dead in Mexico. :)

    • @kodidane5824
      @kodidane5824 Рік тому

      There's an entire holiday for it in the US. Memorial day. People BBQ and eat together and visit graves of loved ones to put flowers on them.

    For the habitant of New York, Paris or London, the dead is the word that never pronounces cause it burns the lips. The mexican in the other hand hangs around with it, mocks her, cuddle with her, sleeps with her. Is one of his favorite toys and his most permanent love. True, in his attitude like in the others maybe there's fear, but at least he doesn't hide it or hides himself. He stares face to face with impacience, indiference or irony "if i may die tomorrow better die right now"
    Fragment of The solitude labirynth by mexican writer Octavio Paz. Sums pretty well the collective mexican spirit of this celebration.

    Día de Muertos was my favourite celebration growing up. Its such a ritualistic concept: buying fruits and flowers, making the food, putting up the altar. Its so familiar and so colorful, we celebrate the life and remember the loved ones that have left us with their favorite food and drinks. You put your name in the calaverita to stay humble "no one escapes from the death", but at the same time you laugh about it "im gonna die anyway so why should i worry". The flowers (bright yellow ones) and the candles guide the souls to their homes, we make a path with them from the door to the altar. We put salt and water for purification, we hang colorful partons of paper with death allegories because its a party, we play music and joke around while having dinner: the adults drinking tequila and laughing and the kids running around trying to steal the candys from the altar and telling scary stories to the younger ones. All that while feeling that our loved ones are there with us, eating and drinking with us, and in the end of the night, when the family starts to leave the house you look at the pictures of the loved one you lost and say goodbye: see you next year, see you when i die and im feasting with you in the other side. You live though my memory, and ill remember you forever.

    I was just watch Neruda last night. Wow. He uses hypnotism, like the old slient film stars, in those extreme close ups of his eyes.
    I was watching Bad Education before this.
    He makes me laugh. This guy is very funny.
    Mexico, we are all jealous of you. You made this bright star!
    Gracias!

    That was horrible. Maybe if we respect for All cultures and traditions. We, could understand it is not only a GUN problem We American's have. But Loud Voices taking leadership, No longer understanding the importance of Harmless traditions like skull Candy making ,food preparation, that have been around to fundamentally envoke what allows for human coexistence in groups of people and tribes around the world. By affording those who practice cooking together reflecting on the lives of those from our past By communicating with one another experiencing laughter, tears, sounds, touches, smell's of those who love one another. Maybe reflect on that and not cry about why it missing.

    to the people that really want to know about this tradition, you should really check that out! Bc even though i am mexican it is pretty hard to understand why this kind of stuff is done u know? The Día de Muertos has such a huge and little details that all of them have a meaning! That's why it's so wonderful, like the cempasúchil flowers (those orange flowers) are meaningful! And the colors orange or purple etc! Or the cross sign in front of the altars made of flour! And the water, the salt, the muerto bread! Oh they're almost infinite! Mexico is a really religious country, that's why it's celebrated everywhere but also brings a beautiful message, the schools have teached too!

    In the Philippines, we also have "Araw ng mga Patay" which literally means "Day of the dead" or "Dia de los Muertos" and celebrated on November 1 and 2 as well. Is this a coincidence? Mexico y Filipinas son hermanos?

    Day of the Dead is not a Mexican version of "Halloween". It's an ancestral celebration. In Mexico, "Halloween" is not popular.

    No we don't eat burritos [sigh] we honor our beloved dead with mole, a special bread made for the ocasion, hot chocolate, sugar skull decorated with colors, a special flower used only for that day (cempasúchil) candles, a glass of water, a plate with salt, cutting paper to decorate, each one of these elements have a special meaning in the altar and everything else is extra, for example if your abuelita liked tequila, tobacco. Next day we eat that food as a way to share with them. But if you are in a really traditional town everybody goes to the cementery, decorate the tomb and spend all day and night in a big massive party, sharing with their beloved ones, paying their respect and remembering those who aren't with us with joy.

      I see your point, but burritos are a typical dish from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, so it is a mexican tradition too.
