What i wan't to point out is, Day of the Dead is not the "Mexican version" of Halloween, and is not a day for the kids as Halloween might be. They don't necessarily get candy. It is a day to celebrate the time our family members were alive. To connect with our memories of them.
I met Gael a long time ago in Mexico, by chance I saw him in a shopping center and he was very kind, and it shows that until today he is a simple and humble person and good vibes.
You are so lucky. I'm from india an I started watching Mexican films ever since I found about Gael. He's incredible talented and I never admired anyone like this before. But sadly, the borders come in between my unquenchable desire to meet this guy😭
I feel like jimmy was disrespectful in this interview, día de los muertos is a tradition deeply rooted in the Mexican culture and while I understand that it may seem weird to him because it is something he maybe is not familiar with, he seemed to kind of make fun of it but I think Gael handled it very gracefully.
Which is weird because being Jewish like Kimmel is, there is also a big death positive culture in Judaism. I would know I grew up religious and culturally Mexican and both sides display a big respect for death and mourning in a healthy way.
Día de los Muertos it's such a beatiful, brightful celebration. As Gael said, it's about celebrating life, remembering the loved ones that aren't here and face the fact that life will eventually become death. As mexican, I must admit that this is my favorite cultural celebration.
As a US citizen, it is my duty to formally denounce Jimmy’s bland banter and arrogance, and heretofore move to have said person aborted from our nation and dispossessed of its legal privileges.
I love jimmy but this time he was acting like a jerk, He was trying to make fun about a tradition that has a long back ground from ages, I could tell it in Gael’s face, not really enjoying it, but he is a gentleman.. so.
It’s kind of offensive how he’s laughing at what Gael is sharing about his culture.. wasn’t expecting that from Jimmy . Clearly he hasn’t even Watched the movie
For the habitant of New York, Paris or London, the dead is the word that never pronounces cause it burns the lips. The mexican in the other hand hangs around with it, mocks her, cuddle with her, sleeps with her. Is one of his favorite toys and his most permanent love. True, in his attitude like in the others maybe there's fear, but at least he doesn't hide it or hides himself. He stares face to face with impacience, indiference or irony "if i may die tomorrow better die right now" Fragment of The solitude labirynth by mexican writer Octavio Paz. Sums pretty well the collective mexican spirit of this celebration.
Having a special day where you go pay respects to the deceased members of your family is a really beautiful thing that is also done in other cultures/countries . There are similar festivities in Europe and Asia. I think it's important to acknowledge and celebrate these natural, inevitable life cycles and it's unfortunate that it's not more of a thing in the US.
hmm, it's more than paying respect, is more like a party, a family reunion with your deceased relatives, and because they can only come here one day of the year, you get them food and other stuff that they liked (cigarettes, alcohol, favorite flowers).
yeah, here in Mexico It´s not that solemn. People go to graveyards and decorate the tombstones with flowers and food, they also play music and pay respect and everything but in a joyful way. Actually, there is also a tradition of writing "calaveritas" to your family and friends. "calaveritas" are a small poetry about how you are gonna die and what the Dead is going to say to you when she takes you, but in a very playful and ironic way, and on the day of the dead you gift the "calaverita" to the person you´re talking about. Even there are calaveritas contests around the country. I guess thats the best example about how we live the day of the dead in Mexico. :)
Día de Muertos was my favourite celebration growing up. Its such a ritualistic concept: buying fruits and flowers, making the food, putting up the altar. Its so familiar and so colorful, we celebrate the life and remember the loved ones that have left us with their favorite food and drinks. You put your name in the calaverita to stay humble "no one escapes from the death", but at the same time you laugh about it "im gonna die anyway so why should i worry". The flowers (bright yellow ones) and the candles guide the souls to their homes, we make a path with them from the door to the altar. We put salt and water for purification, we hang colorful partons of paper with death allegories because its a party, we play music and joke around while having dinner: the adults drinking tequila and laughing and the kids running around trying to steal the candys from the altar and telling scary stories to the younger ones. All that while feeling that our loved ones are there with us, eating and drinking with us, and in the end of the night, when the family starts to leave the house you look at the pictures of the loved one you lost and say goodbye: see you next year, see you when i die and im feasting with you in the other side. You live though my memory, and ill remember you forever.
I usually like Jimmy, but he acted like an a**hole, he was trying to be funny, but instead made Gael uncomfortable. The point of the movie is to show different cultures and the least you can do is respect!
Jimmy, you are good with the healthcare stuff, but then you still do that condescending white man thing about other cultures, esp. any thing to do with Latino culture. Stop it, Jimmy, just stop it.
I was in MX for a couple weeks around the Day of Dead honoring 2017. Shrines everywhere. On streets, in windows, entryways. It was a moving experience. In fact that Halloween followed by Day of Dead was one of the best times ever.
Coco, the film that made me fall in love with Gael Garcia Bernal. He's a great actor and a bueno singer as well. I just LOVE the sound of his voice; it just makes me swoon. 💓🎶😍

jimmy sounded appalled but i think it sounds like a lovely celebration
Roberto Enrique Ramos Rivera same
Same. My family never celebrated Dia de los Muertos but I always loved the whole idea of it and the message.
Roberto Enrique Ramos Rivera tú pones altar? Yo jamás solo como que en la escuela y ya
Yes, is my favorite too!
What a beautiful man.
Also - shut up, Jimmy.
mareir Mexico city baby !!! We r like that 😎😎
Jimmy's arrogance made me cringe.
Ricardo Blackmetal guadalajara actually
Gael is SO gorge! 😍
As a US citizen, it is my duty to formally denounce Jimmy’s bland banter and arrogance, and heretofore move to have said person aborted from our nation and dispossessed of its legal privileges.
Love Gael. He's so nice and humble. And pretty hot.
lar hjp Well he wont be Ugly hot.... right?
You should see him in the movie “The crime of father Alberto” he was gorgeous 😍
+sel99100 It's not Alberto it's Amaro
Yeah he's my mans
Yeah, he's a sweetie! ❤️
Jimmy was being more condescending than authentically interested, then again that's his whole career
I love jimmy but this time he was acting like a jerk, He was trying to make fun about a tradition that has a long back ground from ages, I could tell it in Gael’s face, not really enjoying it, but he is a gentleman.. so.
I don' think he was insulting to Dia de Los Muertos. I just think Jimmy's jokes were so lame. "Are real skulls made of candy?" -.-
LynnMelo Yea Jimmy was definitely lacking in the joke department during this segment. Embarrassing.
I'm sure Jimmy wouldn't have made fun of a Jewish holiday. "You leave an empty chair for who???"
@@rgj9524 lmao
Jimmy is and ignorant buffoon. Pay him no mind.
Lmao his reaction on last question was like wtf Jimmy
It’s kind of offensive how he’s laughing at what Gael is sharing about his culture.. wasn’t expecting that from Jimmy . Clearly he hasn’t even
Watched the movie
mayrakata I mean, he wasn't exactly able to see the movie when this interview took place, but even so he was being way over the line and offensive...

There's an entire holiday for it in the US. Memorial day. People BBQ and eat together and visit graves of loved ones to put flowers on them.
Jimmy kind of thinks this is a kids' holiday like halloween, when it is a cultural tradition for everyone in México.
Man I could listen to Geal talk all day and never get bored
"You bring the pictures food?" "Do they ever eat the food?" How FREAKING rude! Have some respect for other peoples traditions dude!!
hes just cracking a joke...relax
@@jaivas16 No.

EXACTLY. They're not just "pictures", they're images of family members place on the ofrenda to remember and respect; how dare he insult a tradition.

Mariana Eugenia Plus, Gael has one of those beautiful voices that you want people to shut up and let you listen to.
*sighs* Gael is just SO dreamy. The sound of his voice gives me the feels. 😍😗
Gael has one of those voices that I can just listen to all day long, even if he's describing his grocery list.
this made me so happy! Im so glad a Mexican is speaking about the celebration they way it really is :) Gracias Gael
Such an example of: Mexicans can DO it well.
I need more Gael Garcia and Diego Luna interviews in my life.
Hot dynamic duo
On behalf of all of us, I'd like to extend my sincerest apologies to Gael and pretty much everyone else for having to deal with Kimmel.
Gael seems so genuine, the other guy is just a ridicoulous entertainer

Also in Italy the 2th of november is the day of the dead and the first of november is the day of all Saints.
Federica Schena Same in Mexico (Dia de todos los Santos).
Mexico got this tradition from Europe, when Spain got here, but it was adapted with its own prehispanic culture
Anahi19 Alcalá México did not get el Día de muertos from Europe. El Día de muertos is a millenary tradición. Grettings!

Day of the Dead is not a Mexican version of "Halloween". It's an ancestral celebration. In Mexico, "Halloween" is not popular.

He should be added to the Handsome Men’s Club 😂
OK- he is a great actor and one sexy hombre!

I see your point, but burritos are a typical dish from Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, so it is a mexican tradition too.
When you are Mexicano y ya viste la pelicula ❤️
Fernanda Castañon when you are mexican but live in the US , so I haven't seen it.
