- Join Nicola, Luna the Dog and Robin on a short but rewarding hike up Fyrish Hill near Alness to see the Fyrish Monument. Fyrish Monument is also on the NC500 route, a must see! The short walk is 3.75 miles there and back and takes 2-3 hours to complete.

Built in 1782 on Fyrish Hill on the orders of Sir Hector Munro, 8th of Novar, a native lord of the area who had served in India as a general. As the local population were being cleared off the land they had worked for centuries by the Lords of the Land, survival was a problem and so it was built to keep the locals in labour. It was said that Sir Hector rolled stones from the top of the hill to the bottom, thereby extending the amount of time worked and paying the labourers for additional hours.
It represents the Gate of Negapatam, a port in Madras, India, which General Munro took for the British in 1781. It is visible from almost anywhere in the parishes of Kiltearn and Alness.
The site of the monument provides an extensive view over the Cromarty Firth and beyond, and Ben Wyvis can be seen clearly, especially impressive if snow-covered. A path to the top starts at a car park northeast of the hill at OS grid NH627715. Source: Wikipedia.

Always worth a wee bit of time Robin - a recharge and we're happy as Larry. Love the transparent leaves more than the monument to be fair - that was like a bit of land art. Well, great views to finish. Good going. Mark
Yeah, was nice to get away with Nicola and the dog. 😊 The bark/leaves was really cool, I honestly thought it was like bike reflectors on the tree. Cheers mate.
@@WalkWithWallace Hey, good to hear Robin dog and all. Yeah, Andy Goldsworthy would be impressed with them leaves I reckon. A pleasure - have a cool wet weekend.
@@WyeExplorer you too bud. 🍂☔
The bark was quite interesting, not seen that effect before.
Me neither, the camera didn't do it justice either as there was a few all dotted about. 🌲

Hi Robin, Yeah, sorry about that. I've been plagued with ill health, I won't bore you with the details. Slowly getting better, I haven't t given up on wild camping just yet, but don't hold your breath! Lol!

Cheers Stripey, you're right about the drone. Too lazy to take it and it's not that much hassle really. 😂
